We got the feeling we were NOT welcome at all! We visited Baan Thai after seeing the high Yelp ratings - the food was good but the service was astonishingly poor. Maybe it was an off day but our hostess was NOT happy to serve us. She seemed disinterested, absolutely rude, and was happy to see us go. We were a party of three.We ordered the appetizer platter, Drunken Noodles, Fried Rice, and a Thai Ice Tea. The Fried rice was quite flavorful, drunken noodles were average, and some of the items in our assorted appetizer platter were good (spicy chicken patty) while some were quite bad (chicken satay). Our hostess kept slamming plates on the table! It was clear she was having a rough day (or maybe she didn't like the sight of us?) In between our meal she came by and placed a bowl of noodles in front of us. We were about to start eating when she came back and took the plate away literally mid bite, without offering any explanation. Maybe she got the order wrong? Either way she did not explain or apologize! And at the end she did not even ask us if we wanted to get dessert or more food. She seemed thrilled to see us leave! This has to be top of the list for the strangest experience I've had at any restaurant while dining in with my family. Left a bad taste in our mouths - quite literally! Ordered Pad See Ew with tofu and Pad Ginger with veggies. Pad See Ew was on the sweeter side. Pad Ginger had a lot of ginger and the veggies used were generic veggies you would see in a frozen veggie bag (baby corn, wrinkle cut carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, snap peas). My husband and I went to this restaurant yesterday (August 2024). I ordered the Crispy Chicken Pad see Ewe and hubby ordered a variety of appetizers. Due to their complete incompetency, I never got my food but the people behind me did. The people behind me had to have their food redone and when my husband was finished eating the owner brought out a Pad see Ewe with no meat. I refused it at that point and just asked for our tab. Absolutely amazing Thai cuisine! Easily the best that I have ever experienced in America. The flavors were fresh, vibrant and complex. I ordered my dishes medium spicy which is just enough to put a nice tingle on my lips and tongue. Tonight I ordered the Summer Rolls with Crab, Tom Yum soup with Chicken and Drunken Noodles with Beef. Everything was fresh and tasty. Superb taste and flavor resonated in my mouth. I chose this establishment for dinner tonight based on the recommendations of my fellow Yelpsters. You were spot on about this hidden gem. This use to be one of my favorite restaurants, but not after the encounter i experienced yesterday. Whoever the manager is in this establishment needs to rethink her career in customer service. Yesterday I went in and purchased my regular order of shrimp fried rice medium spice level. I went to my car and started to eat the food but noticed there was HAIR deep down in it. I hadn't been gone for 5 minutes. So, I politely went back in to the establishment to show them (remind you the food still had steam coming out of it and still looked like i just opened it up) The cashier with the red hair at the register apologized asked if the hair was red (assuming it was her hair and after I said no said thank God) would I like a refund or my food made over. I instantly said no thank you I just want a refund. She told me one second, she was going to go speak with her manager about the situation (remind you I order here at least three times a month). So, the cashier comes back up to the front (literally shaking) and said yeah, she said that she can't issue a refund, but she can make it over. As she is sitting there talking to me i see someone hesitating to come up to the front. She finally gets to the front (never made eye contact, never apologized, never introduced herself, completely nothing). So, i asked are you so and so and she looks up aggressively and says yep and i continue to say okay I don't want my food made over i would please just like a refund. She goes to say "I'm not giving you a refund that is our policy, but I'll make it over". So, I called her out because if you go eat at any restaurant and a customer is unhappy or has a complaint the manager comes out introduce their selves, listen to the situation, apologize, shows empathy, and offer some type of compensation. She did NONE of that but instead sent her cashier to do her dirty work. So, I asked her where the policy is posted in the establishment (she couldn't answer it because there isn't one, there may be one today because of me addressing it yesterday but yesterday there wasn't one). So, she started arguing back and forth after I called her out and went ahead to say this isn't about race either because there was an Asian lady in here last week who wanted a refund, and we told her the same thing. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!! At this point I'm livid. So, I asked her what the hell does race have to do with anything? idc if the lady was pink, purple, blue, white, Mexican, black, or whatever I wanted my money back. As you can imagine I'm HOT I couldn't believe the way this MANAGER was talking and treating a loyal customer of this business. She then goes to say that it wasn't her hair while looking at mine, but her cook was back there with the same color hair with no hair net. At that point it was getting nowhere, and I asked do they have a corporate number (which must've pissed her off) because she goes to say "we're a family-owned business we don't have a corporate number" so I'm like okay well can I speak to your boss ANNIE, and she states that she wasn't there. So, I asked for her number, and she told me that she wasn't going to give it to me but called her instead herself, walked to the back trying to switch up the story and act as if I was the one being hostile when in fact, she came up there with the wrong demeanor and energy as a manager. She hangs up from her boss the owner ANNIE and says yeah ANNIE said we can remake it and that's it. At that point I'm just in awe about what was happening to me. So, since they couldn't handle it in a professional manner, I told them that every customer that walked in there i was going to tell them not to eat there because they have hair in their food and do not offer refunds. She gets madder and says well I'm going to call the cops and have you removed. At that point I was seeing red and left before things escalated. Meanwhile, they were dressed in pajamas (like did you even wash your ass or brush your teeth), cooking in the kitchen with no hair nets, no gloves, no aprons or anything. Oh, and as all of this was going on the cashier was recording so they have video footage from beginning to end, along with a camera in the establishment so ask them to post it and try to lie their way out of this one! DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO EAT HAIR IN YOUR FOOD AND GET BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

I think this new Thai place has great potential. However, it still has a way to go to be up to par with the other Marion Thai restaurant. My little group came in here on a Monday evening. We were the only ones there so service was very attentive. I have no complaints about that. The lady who greeted us was sweet and friendly. I also enjoyed the music they were playing, old school 90's and 2000's. On to the my opinions of the food. We ordered the combo platter, Massaman curry, pad see ewe, and the thai pho. The combo platter didn't come with the crispy rice like it said. I guess they changed the menu to instead include fried wontons. The one item on the plate that I didn't enjoy very much was the tod mun gai. It appeared overcooked and had a chewy, tough texture to it. The massamun curry and pad see ewe were perfectly fine. The curry was very rich in flavor and the pad see ewe noodles were perfectly al dente and its pre-cut carrots were very easy to eat. The last item - the thai pho - is something I would skip that all together. It was the worst dish we had. I was so excited to see some variation of pho here in Southern Illinois, but it basically tasted like hot water with chili oil sprinkled on top. There was literally no flavor. I had to add a lot of salt for some kind of flavor to shine through. Overall, I think this place will eventually find its footing because it's still new. Really good Thai food. More authentic and spicy than some other places. Good prompt service in a small quaint location. Be prepared for a small venue, which gets busy later in the evening. The appetizers (spring rolls and won tons) were hot and crispy with a mildly spicy sweet and sour sauce. Our main courses were spicy and rich in flavor. Good ingredients but more veggies than we are used to seeing in Thai food dishes. A beef with Basil has bell peppers in it. Overall probably my favorite so far in this area. read more

The food is a good value and the restaurant is pretty standard. The service was excellent. The prices are pretty on par to other Thai establishments in the area but you dont get as much. I will frequent them from time to time when I want to change it up from my regular local Thai place.
