UCLA charges this much because they actually don't want people to be able to pay. That empowers them to write off the "losses" to maintain their non-profit and tax advantaged status, while profiting handsomely off insurance. My insurance paid nearly $600 for only a few blood tests, while Function health tests for 10x more for $365 (or simply pay cash for the tests at Quest). UCLA is now charging me $700 for what insurance didn't cover. The whole US medical system is a joke, where hospitals and insurers profit and people suffer. Unfortunately, UCLA is complicit in it even more than the for profit lab corporations.

A scooter accident around the corner from the UCLA…read morecampus office blocked the street with police and an ambulance, so I texted the office at 12:14 to let them know I'd be late. The staff was already aware of the accident. When I arrived at the front desk to check in, Dr. Aronin refused to see me and told me to reschedule. A few minutes' delay for a documented emergency outside his own office, communicated in advance, wasn't enough to earn any flexibility. I'll be finding a new primary care physician, and I'd suggest anyone who values a doctor with basic grace for his patients do the same.

We really like it that he is thoughtful and careful about ordering only medical tests that have a proven benefit rather than ordering many tests as we have experienced with other healthcare providers. On several occasions I have emailed him with questions related to health care and/or billing questions. He is very service oriented and responds promptly. We have been seen promptly for our scheduled visits. We don't feel rushed when we bring our list of questions. For one of my appointments I was seen by both Dr. Greenberg and a medical student. They were in the room together and I understood that because UCLA is an academic health care system, new doctors learn by being mentored by experienced physicians. I felt very comfortable because I knew that Dr. Greenberg was overseeing everything and this is how new doctors learn.

Although her office is ALWAYS running late (usually 30-45 minutes behind), I continue to come because Dr. Mangione listens at every appointment, never rushes me, and never dismisses my concerns about this problem or that problem. She remembered once that I mentioned I was a vegetarian and the next visit gave me a few names of cookbooks she had researched so I could make sure I was getting proper nutrition. Dr. Mangione is also gay friendly which is a big relief coming from the Midwest where doctors are not. She doesn't try to push medication on you and instead looks at the whole picture to figure out what's wrong. I would highly recommend.
