If you don't want to spend an arm and a leg at a restaurant for breakfast, grab some expensive groceries at Alice's. High quality items, but high prices. For 6 people, we spent around $100 on breakfast items. A 4-pack of chicken sausages were $10, but still more convenient than getting in a car and driving to the grocery store that's 15 minutes away. While checking out, the clerk asked me to hit one of the big buttons on the pad. Of course, all of the buttons were for tips! I instead hit the small button to pay. For folks who are staying in the Village, Alice's Mountain Market is a great place to fill in some groceries but definitely not the place for full-blown grocery shopping. They have many of the food essentials from milk to eggs to cup o' noodles to pasta sauces to lunch meats to snack foods....you get the idea. They also have a bunch of drinks from bottles of wine to six packs of beers and sports drinks. Some items are very expensive relative to what I'm used to seeing (like eggs) and others, like sports drinks, are pretty averagely priced. They also have some grab and go sandwiches for people who are skiing or just want a very, very quick meal and other things like hand warmers. read more

Small space with lots of stuff. Was looking for charcuterie and sandwich items for a tram trip up to High Camp. Not knowing what was open at High Camp. Walked in the lady working did not acknowledge us, in fact walked into the back of the store. Salami and like items in the cooler were a poor selection. Some were to expire that day and some packages were swelling. Found some packages with cheese and pancetta. Some shelves were empty. Not sure if because of recent opening? Did pick up juices as well. Good market with lots of options. It surprises me how much they can fit in such a small space. The only thing I think was odd about this market is that when you check out there's an option for adding a tip. For what? For a person to sit on a stool behind a counter and ring you up? The concept of this market is great- it's right off the mountain with a lot of options for basic grocery items/ snacks. However, the prices are outrageous. It's expected that off a ski mountain everything gets more expensive- restaurants, bars, etc... but this market has taken it to a whole new level. It's robbery. read more

The only grocery store type of situation at the base of Squaw, Alice's is best for quick food fixes, emergency fill-ins, and picnic pick ups. Not the place to shop for a week...or even really a full dinner. Their goods skew organic, which I prefer, and I'm always surprised by the breadth of their selections of fine cheeses. They stock a small range of fruits and veggies, plus a few dozen loaves of fresh bread. Fitting the picnic vibe, they have lots of wines and many types of beers on hand. I have stopped here before hikes nearby and stocked up on treats that brought cheers when unpacked on the trail. If you need aspirin or shampoo, they can hook you up there too. The one draw back is that they always seem to be one item short of what I need. read more

I just paid 85 for not even a full day of groceries, then you want me to tip? I saw a young kid who probably works minimum wage here tip the lady. I guess it's expected. In my search for reading material, I was directed to Alice's Mountain Market. I found a nice though somewhat limited selection of magazines: New Yorker, Vogue, Better Homes and Gardens. I also picked up some water and some popcorn. After the one clerk (nice guy with blond dreadlocks) finished up with some other customers, I queried him on whether or not there were any paperbacks. He took me to their sister store, which was named Alice's Fun & Games or something like that. At any rate, this store had an also limited (but inspired) selection of used books -- several of which tempted me -- and a even more limited (tiny -- like eight book) selection of new books. I picked up a used book, The Lady and the Monk, a travelogue of an Indian man in Japan -- so far, it's pretty good. At any rate, the service was great. I'm glad for the reading material and the snacks. read more

I was expecting to walk and see junk food, crappy beer and gross frozen foods but was pleasantly surprised! Off the bat I was really impressed with the selection of all natural beauty products, from hair dye to Alba and Nature's Gate lotions and Kiss My Face makeup. There are tons of different food options, including the easy to make (like Annie's mac and cheese), a small selection of produce, some decent frozen foods and healthier snack options (i.e. Kettle chips). There is also an okay selection of beer, wine and other drinks (including Izze soda, yum). We were told that during peak season (starting July 4th weekend) they have even more inventory, plus there is a small dvd rental place attached. read more

I definitely liked Alice's much more back when it was housed by the post office a little down the road from the Village. The service is still the same...the kids are a little lackluster but Alice is stellar. She is so warm and friendly. I dare you to have a conversation with her and go away with a frown. It's almost impossible. Alice really knows her stuff. I go to her for recommendations on herbal products all the time. She gave me the best recommendation for a cold stop remedy that works every time. The store at the Village is surprisingly dark. It can be hard to see what everything is. What you might be missing: healthy organic choices intermixed with the expected ski home fixings: pancake mixings, bacon in the freezer with hearty syrups on the shelves. Alice's also has a good soft drink and beer selection. Due to popular demand, Alice's also has a mini DVD/video rental place attached to the general store. Even though it's small, there are plenty of great choices. The only annoying thing is that the DVD store has weird hours. I find it strange that it doesn't share the same hours with the general store it is attached to. That really bums me out. Sometimes you just want to pick up a good movie and it sucks when you have to come back later during a small time window. All in all, Alice's is the spot to hit if you want to support local businesses and just grab a snack or a few groceries. I do love Alice herself, but the store is just not the same now that it's housed in the monstrous Village. read more

Health food store at high camp--hallelujah! I was really surprised by the selection of healthy groceries here, perfect for a night or several of cooking while you stay at Squaw. They also have granola bars, desserts, wine, etc. At first we thought we would have to leave Squaw Village for groceries, but we were able to just walk here and get everything we needed. Nice. You obviously pay a mild premium, but don't complain, it's a healthy grocery in the village! Also there is a nice story about how it was founded decades ago by a local. read more

They have movie rentals! There's a limited selection of small souvenir-type items (magnets, postcards, snow globes, etc). A lot of natural, organic products available. You can buy frozen entrees to heat up in your hotel room as well as some pre-baked desserts, tortilla chips, etc. If you're like me and from Texas, you'll be pleased to know they sell Wolf Brand Chili! read more

My friends and I stayed in the village for 4 days. Our room was equipped with kitchenette and this was the perfect place to shop for groceries during our stay. Place looks small from outside and doesn't look like much but I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of healthy, organic and gluten-free groceries. They also had fresh fruits and veggies, limited selection but it was good enough for a short stay. Of course, you expect to pay resort price but when you split your bill with your friends, it's really not that bad. We got to enjoy some great, healthy but simple meals for 4 days: salad with avocado, tofu and japanese soba noodle, gluten free turkey sausage, eggs, organic pork links, etc. Very friendly staff: we had to return organic frozen pizzas after realizing that we didn't have an oven in our room (doh!), the guy didn't even check my receipt though I brought it and let me exchange for something else. FIY: There's an ATM right by the door. I was happy to shop there and eat healthy meals during my stay! read more

You would probably will just go here for emergency. I will say it is pricey because it is in the heart of the village. They offer few variety of food items, skincare, toiletries and other stuff that you might have run out along the way. This store has a surprising variety and selection of basics and food. My resort's store didn't have my essentials so I stopped in here and found everything I needed. They offer plenty of convenience items for those looking for on the go snacks and quick foods. What surprised me was the amount of foods they offered for those that wanted to cook and also a limited selection of produce. You'll definitely find what you need to cook a basic meal or grab a snack for a day of outdoor adventure. Pricing seemed normal for a convenience store, especially since almost every item is of the organic nature. read more

in the middle of manhattan, this liquor cum DVD rental shop would just not do, but sandwiched between yet another art store and yet another ski shop in the Village at Squaw, it's welcome relief. the only place you can get (overpriced) hard likker. and wine, too. and munchies, including a bafflingly extensive selection of handmade truffles. and thank goodness for the DVD rentals otherwise we'd actually have to talk to each other. read more

I went in last Saturday to get some bottled waters. It's a slow weekend this time of season and there were two other people in the store and one cashier. She was helping them find the items they needed for their alcohol purchase. I grabbed my waters and patiently waited by the register. They were taking some time so I browsed the chocolates behind me. Eventually, two other ladies came in the store. I hear one of the guys tell the cashier, "why don't you help those people out first?" since they were taking their time. I watch the cashier come back to the register, turn around and help the ladies that had walked through the door. I call out "excuse me! I'm standing right here!" to get the cashier's attention. She calls back "that register is closed" and continues to help the ladies. Uhm, I had been standing in the same spot for 8 minutes, in the exact spot she was helping out the two guys gather their items. I put the waters back in the fridge and walked over to Starbucks and purchased there. read more

This is the kind of place that, while the prices on individual items are much more than you'd pay for groceries at home, you're *so* grateful for in context! If you're staying in one of the many Squaw Valley lodgings with a kitchen, you can save some money on dinner and make something to your own healthy specifications with the items here (a good mix of ingredients and prepared food).
