Many shelves were empty, prices were noticeably higher than average, and several items were mismarked--but employees wouldn't override the incorrect pricing. If you're headed to Tahoe, I strongly recommend doing your grocery shopping before you arrive. For being in such an uppity area you'd expect quality food and superior customer service but that is not what you get. For the most part the produce was decent but the pack of sliced pepper Jack we bought was wet, soggy and smelled so bad we had to toss it. The salads in the deli counter were all discolored and looked dried out. They were out of fresh chicken breasts so we couldn't get their 2 person hot meal deal and this was at 2pm, so not like we came last minute. All of the fresh bread felt hard as a rock. Lots of the meats looks off in color and we're marked down. Just overall pretty bad. And because of the location, prices here are high so definitely not the quality you'd expect. Customer service was also lacking. The lady in front of us forgot something so she told the cashier to void her transaction and ring us up while she went back for what she needed. The cashier rang up all our items (27 items) and then realized she didn't void the previous transaction so we were about to pay for our groceries and the lady that was in front of us. Instead of voiding out the 5 items that belonged to the other lady, she took her sweet time and voided out all 27 of our items, then let the lady come all the way back up to the front of the line and pay for her stuff. At this point there was a huge line of pissed off people. Not to mention I had bagged my own groceries because no one came to help and now we had to unbag everything to be rang up again. A 30 minute grocery trip turned into an hour plus headache. Thankfully I'm not from this area and I never have to set foot in here again. If I was a local tho, I'd probably make the drive to Truckee to avoid this place since the SaveMart down the street closed. read more

I was in there yesterday and I asked the checker if she could call over the loudspeaker for the meat department because there was nobody to be found but that's not unusual. I have been coming here for years and in fairness I am assuming Safeway couldn't have seen the last 5-6 months in their advanced planning. What I do know is I have shopped here for 25 years and today I waited 40 minutes in the checkout line. The store hasn't kept up with the demand and the Bay Area folks hiding out during COVID-19 and added social distancing and masks made today terrible. I forgot an item and don't want to go back! I don't blame Safeway fully as half the customers we bumped into were miserable as well. I sure hope we get a vaccine soon and can get life back to normal! I was a little bit surprised by the low rating. I shopped at this location for breakfast ideas for a morning and there was not much to complain. The store was small, considering it is in Tahoe area it is very understandable. The breakfast section has a lot of choices, ranging from hot food to cold deli. The quality of course can't compete with actual restaurant, but decent for a grocery store. The customer service are mostly very nice, I was completely new here and talked with 4 associates and all of them were very helpful. One of them helped me to figure out when the donut would arrive (it was from a bigger Safeway through trucks) and the ETA was right on. Another helped me found out the price of donut in bundles and helped me load the assorted donuts, and the third one gave me great recommendations for cold sandwich. The only one that let me down is the one at the check out, despite I told her that half dozen donut has a bundle price as told by the store manager, she just didn't do any checking but simply said that she never heard of it. I was in a hurry and the difference was small so it was not worth dragging store manager into the conversation. I think people should get their expectation right when giving ratings, it does not make sense to compare the food quality and customer service of a grocery store to a fancy fine dining restaurant. read more

Every time we come here, there are only two check outs open and it takes about 20 minutes just to get through the check out line. This is so ridiculous!!! I thought it was a fluke the first time, but after trip #3, it's the same thing! Also, the manager just stands there watching everyone, open another check out!!! I was in Tahoe. No, not to ski. No, not to stay inside and read. I came to Tahoe to sit in a hot tub, wear a furry hat and drink myself awesome. And Safeway helped me and my crew do this. They supplied us our basic necessities... like alcohol, chocolate and blueberries (FTWPancakes). The service was quick, fast, personable and the selection of fruits/veggies, while smaller than any Safeway I've ever seen, good for the fact that it had just snowed and we'd driven up three plus hours with nothing in the car but soy sauce and chocolate covered biscotti. I have never reviewed a grocery store before...this feels odd. I'm going for it!!! I need to commend the cashier Aubrey for her outstanding customer service. I visit this store approximately five days a week and she's usually there and always helpful and nice to me. I've even seen her go above and beyond for other customers and she's always friendly with a smile. I've never had that great of service at a grocery. Ever. I would hire the biz out of her!! We got there a little after 6 pm on Sunday evening, and it was crazy and claustrophobic with people. It was anxiety inducing for our first night in Tahoe when we were trying to keep to ourselves in the midst of Covid-19. People were wearing mask but there was no way to keep distance. At one point there were only 2 checkers with both lines snaking through the isles back to the meat counter in the back. Stood in line for 20 minutes. Clearly they were overrun and they were not limiting how many people were in the store and they did not have adequate staff. The clerk at meat counter was trying to service multiple people and didn't have time to cut meat. When we finally got up to the checkout lane the lady in front wanted cigarettes and it took our checker and another person to go to the service counter to get them causing a 2-3 minute delay after already being in line forever. The customer should have been sent to service counter. We also bagged our own groceries which I did not mind because I felt terrible for the 2 checkers going non-stop. We did go back 3 days later and did not go in because it was busy again but we noticed they were limiting the numbers into the store. read more

This is a very small Safeway compared to others I've been too. It doesn't mean though that I wasn't able to buy everything I needed. My friends and I stocked up in groceries here since it is one of very few grocery stores in the area. I like Safeway because their products are consistent. I can always find good, cheap produce (well compared to hawaii supermarkets, everything here was cheap... Except rice. Rice was more expensive. Spam too). Several workers asked if we needed help, even though we didn't, it was a nice offer. I like feeling like I'm buying things on sale here with my safeway rewards card. My only disappointment was with the deli section. It was the smallest Safeway deli I'd ever seen and although we went between 11-12, most of their lunch items weren't out yet. Maybe only in hawaii are he supermarket delis open and ready for business before 8am? Idk. We stood in a check out line for 10-15 minutes and when we finally made it to the checker is said "I am going to shut this check out line down after this customer so you should go to self check out". We don't like using self check and told him he said that is our only option. Only grocery store to be found in Lake Tahoe at least in our area. I wanted something clean, without sugar, gluten and animal fat. I walked up to the deli and 4 employees were chatting. After 3 minutes I finally asked if I could order something or if they were done with their shift. No ingredients are listed on their signs. What I thought would be basic, veggies, had a long list of ingredients on the price tag. It included High Fructose corn syrup, oils etc... A bit taky and not California style....
