This place is awesome usually. It totally depends on who is pouring. We've been there multiple times and it's been good. We went there recently, and the person pouring was terrible. When you run a wine shop... You can't tell people that you're pouring one wine and that it is a Spanish. The person was basically telling us to leave, which we did. Came in for a nice bottle of wine for dinner, and was not disappointed. Since this one's off the beaten path, you won't get the overwhelming traffic of the main drag. There are selections in here that you won't find anywhere else. The attendant that helped me was friendly, and kept my budget in mind while recommending something perfect for my dinner. My family and I have lived in town for 10+ years, and have always put in a good word for this business. However, we went for a visit recently with some extended family that was visiting. We asked the employee inside for some wine and cheese recommendations, however he quickly became inpatient, and escalated to the point of being downright rude, after we took up about three minutes of his time, stating "I don't have time to stand around and yap all day". A good wine shop must do two things well: offer you the wines you desire when you enter; and introduce you to the wines you had never before heard of, but that end up enchanting you when you drink them. If you only perform one of these tasks, that's pretty good. But if you manage to do both, then you're really firing on all cylinders. Plus, if you happen to do all of this from a converted house on a side street in Truckee, thousands of feet above sea level and miles and miles away from wine shop epicenters like Berkeley, San Francisco, or Reno, well that's even more remarkable and worthy of applause. I came here for an off dry bottle of German Riesling, to serve with a simple summer al fresco meal. I found a good one under $20, a 2015 Dr. Heyden Rheinhessen Spaetlese, with the petrol notes I particularly enjoy in this grape varietal. But the real find was something I hadn't expected: a 2017 Ameztoi Basque rosado wine from the Getariako Txakolina region, made from indigenous grapes (Hondarribi Beltza and Hondarribi Zuri) and vinified with a low alcohol and light effervescence that was charming when served with a slight chill, one courtesy of soaking the bottle in a cold flowing creek in Nevada City later that evening. So, come here with one fixed idea of what kind of wine you want, or what meal you will be serving. Get a bottle for that occasion. Then ask for something else, something new and unexpected. Buy a bottle of that one as well. And be glad that such wine shops like this exist in places like Truckee. Make it a must stop when you are next passing through. read more

Off the main drag there's a few local spots that we've come to know and love. This is one of the hidden (I refuse to say the g-word that normally ensues hidden) houses turned stores in Truckee. As you walk in, your senses will be overwhelmed. Chatter from the very intimate bar, wine bottles stacked from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, a room overflowing with cheese and a small fridge dedicated to craft beer, and every nook and cranny is jammed with chocolates, crackers, and wine paraphernalia. Depending on the season, you'll find yourself surrounded by many wine enthusiasts or if it's the shoulder season, you may have the whole place to yourself. Tastes are a modest $1-2 bucks and worth every sip. To be honest, I almost didn't write this review, just so we could continue to hoard this shop to ourselves. But the last time we went, I picked up a bottle of red, 4-pack of Italian fizzy moscato (we didn't think twice about that; it's as good as we imagined) and a sixer of an Icelandic Pale Ale (when's the last time you had a brew from Iceland?) and I decided it would be a disservice to not share with my yelp community. Came in and bought three bottles of wine. One of which was what they were pouring for a tasting which was very good. We then bought one which the guy recommended. We enjoyed that bottle as well. They have a wide unusual selection and decent prices. My complaint would be that the dude helping us seemed very uninterested in helping us. We were asking him questions during the tasting and he seemed annoyed that we were even there. He definitely didn't show off any of his wine knowledge. I like buying and tasting from the Pour House as often as I can. It is run by a husband/wife team. Both are knowledgeable in their trade, listen to their customers' needs, and provide both a great experience and product. I walked over to their store a couple of days ago, was greeted at the door, and asked for a Bordeaux-style blend. She offered a $28 wine from Oregon with no hesitation. Described it in a way that made me say "yes!" and then ask for more. I asked what she had that was in the next price tier, and she told me she would look in the cellar and see. She came back with another, in the $60 range. I have since had both, and both were excellent wines. The more expensive one was justified for the extra dough, and the more inexpensive one was a surprise and delight, complex, balanced, reasonable structure. The fact is they don't gouge, try to sell you overpriced stuff that drives corporate marketing machines. They direct you towards the smaller, great producers that make wine drinking a wonderful part of life - even in Covid times..... I was so disappointed. My husband and I stopped by today we had not been there in a while. The gentleman on the front porch was eating his lunch. I asked if it was open or we could come back after lunch... because it was very large neon sign that said open and he had a chalkboard sign on the street saying open. For such a small hidden, off beat space, they carry a lot of interesting things. From chatting with a guy that works there, it seems they rotate the inventory a lot too. Yes, this shop is small and can be 'crampt' if there are many others there when you visit. Don't let that stop you. Be patient and appreciate the 'library' that Dean maintains.......plenty to choose from (CA, Oregon and some Washintonian varietals) as well as a small selection of Euro imports. You can enjoy his daily tastings - just plan to devote sufficient time to appreciate the various flights that Dean offers. Prices are as any retailer would likely offer. This is hands down my favorite place to get and educate myself about wine. Dean and Krista are knowledgeable, friendly and smart. Their wall of Under $10 Wines always has great surprises. Never had a bad bottle from the Pour House. When I need a special occasion wine, they steer my uneducated palate toward the right wine with my silly descriptions of what I like a wine to taste like. The setting is a great little rustic building, with a few places to sit for tastings. And, they carry great cheese too. They also let CSA's drop off their goods there for people to pick up. And, they are highly involved in the community. Support the Pour House. You won't regret it. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable but not pushy. The only downsides is the tasting area is small and in the back (only 4 people at a time). I think I am cool enough, I think I know Napa, Sonoma, Foothill, Coastal, Central Coast, World Wines pretty darn OK.... so, what didn't he love about me not to at least say 'hey thanks for stopping into my little shack and being willing to bring your purse and possibly buy some of my super high priced swill that comes from a little hot house that reminds me of a whore house instead of a Poor House."
