Kaasboerderij Alida Hoeve and Klompenmakerij de Vriendschap is a combination cheese farm, clog workshop and a gift shop. Yes it's touristy, but oh gosh, the staff here are just so lovely. They are also dressed in traditional costumes, and were happy to pose with me and mum for a photo. We went to the clog shop first and as we had missed the clog making demonstration (admission is free) the staff here explained some of the traditions behind the clothes, especially how the tying of the apron was a clue if a gal is married or not (I am not going to give away the secret, so you will just have to visit and ask the sales staff or google it). I ended up paying a but more, but got a genuine tulip vase (smallest size) that wasn't made in China.
However the highlight of the stop here was the cheese shop and the cheese-making demonstrations. OMG, the sheer variety of cheeses!!! I think I must have easily tasted 20 kinds, all very distinct and different and comprising of goat cheese, sheep cheese and cow cheese. Okay, so I didn't like any of the smoked Gouda cheese flavours, but there is a lot of variety and my 2nd rank went to the goats cheese with herbs, that was just delish. The only reason I didn't buy it was that I didn't want to take a 400g size, which was the only option available. My 3rd ranked cheese was the Gouda with truffle. But same issue as before. I would have like to purchase maybe 100-150 grams of this, but not such a lot of cheese. So which was my top ranked and the one I purchased? It was Polder Gold mature sheep cheese. The crumbly texture, the slightly salty taste, and just the smoothness of the cheese really appealed to me. And I am not normally a sheep cheese fan, but this was just truly beautiful.
I also tried a lot of the mustards, but my fave was the peppadew. Also got 2 jars of raw honey for 5 euros each, which was a great buy. The one thing I really liked about this store (apart from the lovely service) was that there were samples to taste of everything (incl chocolates and biscuits). This was really great as initially. I was going to buy the pine honey, but after tasting it, realized really wasn't to my taste, and so I didn't end up buying something that I wouldn't use.
One last thing- if you are staying at a hotel, or visit a tourist info shop, grab the 10% discount card for this place, which saves you some euros. All in all, I would definitely visit and buy from here again :) read more
