a bowl of pasta with pesto and parmesan cheese

A small "grocery" and "restaurant." While they do not serve fresh produce, they have prepared foods, such as pastas, sauces, salads, meats and dried pasta, oils etc. (Tip: There are seats at the back, past the kitchen, however, I enjoyed sitting at the front to people watch). Ordered: 1. Pasta special. Which starts at $8, added $2 for pesto (delicious) sauce and I believe added $2 for gluten free pasta? While slightly pricey (maybe I'm just cheap lol), the pasta was delicious. The gluten free pasta didn't taste weird and it was cooked well, with a good chew to it. I believe, the Italians say "al dente." The pesto is delicious. So delicious that I bought some to go. Also, if you order a pasta, it comes with some bread. On that day, it was a house made rosemary focaccia. Very tasty and well made. The interior was soft and fluffy and the I could taste the rosemary. 2. Porchetta: While it wasn't freshly made, the kitchen reheated it in the oven and the skin was super super crispy. The pork was flavourful and fatty; the condiments were tasty too. Might be cheaper (maybe I'm just cheap lol) to order a porchetta sandwich. The thin piece was about $5. While they do bring your order to you, you order at the cashier, seat yourself and then pay at the cashier - didn't see an option to tip. I would definitely come back here for the pasta.

We came back to walk up Roncy almost 40 years after we first moved into this neighborhood- it has changed and this spot is a great example of how good it can be. First impression in the door is a European grocery store with lots of interesting ingredients. Super helpful and friendly staff. Our timing was right and the menu board enticed us to stay for lunch. Good decision! The hot meatball sandwich had lots of real tomato sauce - the real stuff - and tasty meatballs. The Casarecce pasta with sausage and rapini was perfectly prepared and mixed with top quality hard cheese. Excellent. We sat at a small table in the front window and there was more seating at the back. Prepared sandwiches and other takeaway items were available. The handmade pasta looks amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

Delicious, super fresh food - you can taste the love! The staff are amazing and I could undoubtedly live off of their tomato salad.

Fresh, varied, and generally a couple of grades higher than you'll find elsewhere they manage to keep an excellent selection and fantastic pricing due to the solid base of their Portuguese customers and growing traffic from neighborhood newcomers. So why does a local market get a 5 star review? Aside from the lack of gouging, Do Rego has long standing relationships with local farmers. So starting every Spring season, they end up with some of the best examples of truly local produce without screaming about it's provenance and jacking up the price 200%. When walking down Bloor St. with a couple of bunches of the local fresh green onions (which easily exceed .5 meters in length!) I've actually been stopped and asked where I got them. FYI they were a whopping 50 cents for a big fat bunch. The other item of special note are the cheeses from the Azores. Many places in Toronto carry the Quebec-made equivalents which are tasty, but ain't nothing like the real thing. Do Rego always has the real stuff and they will happily slice you a taste - try and NOT buy some - I dare you. Ultimately, Do Rego has redefined my relationship with the local grocer. Most of my experiences with corner market have been borne of convenience tempered with predatory pricing. Do Rego calls to mind the "grocer" of yore. The one my parents told me about, the archetype from old tv and films, the one I never expected to personally experience. So perhaps the 5 stars are mostly for reminding of the way things should be...

Try some of the cheese they keep behind the counter, they will let you sample it first. Only reason for a 4 vs a 5 star rating is that they don't really carry anything organic. There's a cute little patio area that is right beside the streets where we sat and it was covered with a patio umbrella as well - a great touch for the hot summer sun. Overall, it was nice, fresh and refreshing to have on a hot summer day. Would come back for more oysters and snacks in the future!
