Adoption process was thorough but worth it! We adopted our girl, Sanibel, as a puppy from Alive and couldn't be happier.

Right after we adopted Chewie! He's very photogenic.

Don't even bother. They will reject you without bothering to even talk to you or check your references. No reasons are given.

The smell is far beyond what I would consider normal for an animal shelter or rescue. Gloria's personal dogs and cats roam freely throughout the facility, and I witnessed animals urinating and defecating throughout the space. There are used/thrifted animal supplies, including beds, collars, sweaters, etc. EVERYWHERE. The entire place is extremely cluttered, disorganized, and, in my experience, did not appear to be cleaned properly or regularly. Gloria, the owner, is extremely rude and abrasive. I do believe she genuinely cares about the animals, but caring about animals and knowing how to properly care for them are two different things. Both times I adopted an animal from Gloria, she went on lengthy rants about how animals should not be given "a ton" of vaccines or medications. This became extremely concerning after I brought my second animal to my veterinarian. I was told she had severe medical issues that had not been disclosed to me and that she required MANY medications and ongoing treatment to stay safe and healthy, and potentially to stay alive. Multiple employees at my veterinary office told me that, in their opinion, the severity of her medical needs should have been disclosed before adoption and that her condition suggested she had not received the level of medical care she needed. My first adoption was a dog who was in terrible condition when I brought him home: completely matted and covered in feces. They eventually provided me with a free grooming appointment, which I appreciated, but I still cannot understand why he was adopted out in that condition. He deserved to at least be cleaned and groomed for his own comfort before going to a new home. Despite that experience, I returned about a year later because I fell in love with a cat I saw online. I knew from my first experience that Famous Fido was not a place I felt comfortable with, but I wanted to save this particular cat. Unfortunately, I discovered after adoption that she had serious medical issues that had never been disclosed to me. I also have serious concerns about Gloria's claims that she is extremely selective about who she considers a reliable adopter. Based on my own experience and what I have seen from other people's experiences, I strongly believe that her assessment of who is a "reliable" adopter is not applied objectively or consistently. It often seems to come down to whether she personally likes someone's "vibe." I have personally questioned whether factors such as race and relationship status influence who she trusts as an adopter. I felt that my partner and I were treated favorably because we are white and in a straight-presenting relationship, and I find that deeply troubling. I strongly believe Gloria discriminates when deciding who she considers trustworthy enough to adopt. The most frustrating part is that Famous Fido has adorable animals who genuinely deserve loving homes. That is exactly why I went back despite my first experience. I wanted to believe my concerns were an isolated incident, and I wanted to help an animal who needed me. Looking back, the experience feels a little like an abusive relationship: you recognize how unhealthy the situation is, but you keep going back because you care so deeply about the animals. I am incredibly grateful for the animals I adopted and would never change having them in my life. But I cannot overlook the conditions I witnessed, the way I was treated, the condition my dog was in when adopted, or the lack of disclosure surrounding my cat's serious medical needs. I will absolutely not be adopting from Famous Fido again. I strongly encourage anyone considering this rescue to do extensive research and visit the facility themselves before making a decision.

So I wanted to take her to a place where she can visit and play with cats and Harmony House was perfect for that. They had a Holiday Bazaar event which was a free event and they had raffles, a bake sale, etc. All proceeds went to helping the cats. What we loved about Harmony house was that it's a cage free shelter for cats. They had several rooms filled with different cats that you can go into and play with them for however long you wanted. It's a great way to get acquainted especially if you're thinking about adopting! There were several cats available, different breeds and all different temperaments. Such an awesome cast shelter to visit! All of the people that worked there were so friendly and informative too! They all knew the names of each kitty and some names were very clever. If you're looking to adopt a cat or thinking about it, I highly suggest checking out Harmony House For Cats!

What brought me to Harmony House were the humane traps they "rent" out (as long as you bring the…read moretrap back, they never charge you a dime). So I can't comment on the adoption process, but I can speak to the friendliness of the staff/volunteers and the cleanliness of the facility. I was trying to help out a stray cat who'd been coming by and meowing loudly at the door. I was not in a position to adopt another cat, and never once did anyone pressure me to take one of their very cute residents home. Fast-forward to two weeks after picking the trap up, and I'd caught all manner of local wildlife but not the cat. I called to see if I could get a weeklong extension and they cheerfully gave me two more weeks. The building is very clean and modern. Everyone there was very nice when I was picking up and dropping off the trap, if a little harried. I got the impression that they work hard to care for the cats they have and that they sometimes get unscheduled drop-offs (when I showed up to get the trap, the woman who met me at the door looked relieved and said that when the doorbell rang, she was afraid it was "another dump") -- which is sort of heartbreaking. I hope people who have the room and the resources to adopt will check out Harmony House, because their residents certainly deserve a second chance.
