I visited this rescue recently and left absolutely heartbroken by what I saw. The smell inside hit immediately upon entering and the conditions were deeply concerning. I work with shelters and rescues throughout the city and have never experienced anything like this. The litter boxes were filthy, cages and kennels appeared far too small and poorly maintained, and several animals looked visibly unhealthy. The air quality alone made it difficult to stay inside for more than a few minutes, and I can only imagine what prolonged exposure is doing to the animals living there daily. What disturbed me most was that the environment did not feel like a safe, organized rescue focused on rehabilitation and adoption. It felt chaotic, overcrowded, and neglected. There was clutter and obstacles throughout the space, making it feel more like a hoarding situation than a proper animal rescue facility. These animals deserve clean living conditions, proper care, medical attention, and a real chance at finding loving forever homes. read more

This business needs to be shut down. It's like a filthy horror show with poor helpless dogs. The smell is overwhelming and the place is squalor. I was so shaken when we left with the poor dog they had not yet fed by late afternoon. They did not bathe or groom the dog prior to our adoption. Poor thing had burrs and crusty stuff in his fur. He was clearly afraid of them as he would bark and squirm and fight against them trying to shove him in our crate. It was all so upsetting we ran out. Once we were out of there the dog was completely normal. Looking out the car window, snuggling, happy as can be. I cannot stress enough how horrible this place is. I was horrified. read more

Famous Fido's is a God send. I've been friends with Gloria and Ted for decades. They have groomed my dogs and boarded my dogs with TLC. I was able to make a donation that went to create another room, the Savanna Room. Not that it matters to me but I was honored to be the donor on the newly created signage for the room. It gets a little crazy at times, like a home with a lot of children. Please if you can give and tell your friends. My friend adopted a dog and cat from there. She owns a business and has arranged for ongoing donations based on her store sales. Gloria has poured her heart and soul into the care of these abandoned animals. It's her life's work. Adopted our cat from here. The process went very smoothly and I admire their true desire to place these animals in the right homes. Before leaving a negative review, maybe you should try to do the work this place does daily. Listen to the 50+ calls everyday of people trying to throw their animals away. We inquired about adoption and had our cat home with us a few days later. He had been neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, tested for FELV, FIV, Panluek, and everything beforehand to assure he was healthy prior to adoption. Beebee, beware for wanting to give a rescued animal it's needed home. I don't believe these people really have finding homes for these poor critters in their interest. We put in an application for a particular dog. We got an appointment to meet him, he was a cutie and we wanted to adopt him. I had injured my back but went to meet the pup anyway. Gloria is not well but she sits and makes judgements on who can have pets. I don't think she is capable to make decisions like that. My husband has a good job, I'm retired and can be home with the pet, and we would get a glowing recommendation from our vet. And yet we were stalled about the adoption. They would call me. They never did. I called and got the same run around as when we went to visit the dog. I submitted the application three different times, at their request. I feel sorry for the animals in their care. They never leave. Gloria is a hoarder not a person who wants to find homes for these animals, Shame on her. read more

Be careful adopting from this place. They lie about the dog's breed, and if they are willing to do that, what else do you think they'd lie about? They have several obvious pit bulls available that they are calling anything but (usually they call them Labrador or a Labrador mix). I feel bad for the pups. I bet their return rate is high. Shelters lied about temperament, breed, and a plethora of other things just to get the pup out of the door. Looks like this place is no exception. Shameful. See the pic for an example. The woman who runs this shelter is extremely rude. Nowhere on the site or in the email sent by the volunteers states that all the dogs are temperamental (at least that's what she told us within the first 30 seconds of talking to her). She said things to us very judgmentally as people looking to adopt for the first time and wouldn't let us get a word in. We left in less than 5 minutes. The place also smells awful, like no effort to clean it. Terrible. read more

I was treated terribly when I inquired about adopting a dog. Gloria insulted about my capability to own a puppy, she changed the story about the dog's age and temperament several times and she was down right rude to me. I've had dogs my whole life and have trained every one of them. All of the dogs I have owned were extremely loved and cared for. The dogs here looked unhealthy and skinny. The place smells terrible on top of it. They list details online about the dog and when you go there they change the story. You have to beg to meet the dogs. This organization obviously doesn't want to let these dogs go to good homes. I'll find another organization to adopt a dog in need of a good home. We got our two babies Maggie (Maggs) and Precious J (PJ) from Gloria at Fido! We not only love our cats, we love Gloria and Fido! When we entered we were greeted by Gloria and her volunteers. She had a pretty tough line of questioning to make sure we understood the importance of becoming guardians to cats, but every question is exactly what you'd be asked at any other shelter. The process from there was super smooth! I think Gloria is a really misunderstood woman. She's been doing this for almost two decades and so she sounds like she's seen EVERYTHING that could happen to animals! PJ and Maggs are both microchipped, vaccinated, spayed, and in perfect health! We are so grateful for Gloria and Fido and feel we have opened the door to a new friendship! When we went to pick them up, Gloria had already gotten 12 calls about surrendering their cats and received another while we were there. You can tell she advocates for the well being of every animal. Two weeks ago our dog was attacked by an another dog. We don't know who the owner is or where the dog is now. We only know we had a badly injured dog that needed immediate medical attention. We rushed to the emergency vet and was grateful for the help they did however financially we couldn't afford the continuing care. Baffled with the thought of having to put him down I cried. Sunday I reached out to FamousFido and on the other end of the phone was an ANGEL. She said her name was Gloria ( but all I heard was GLORY ) because after hearing me she said these words " Don't Worry we will help".. if you know the pain and pressure I was feeling was overwhelming released when she said that and I kept crying when I got off the phone. Gloria did exactly what she said. She helped save our baby boy. I am forever grateful, thankful etc.. this program with its supporters are Unbelievable. I am truly grateful for coming across Famous Fido because now we have been able to welcome fantastic cats into our family. I can't help but feel as though a lot of these negative reviews are a bit harsh and unfair. I also noticed that the negative reviews did not come from people who actually adopted animals. As someone who adopted 2 excellent cats from Famous Fido, I can not give enough credit for all their work. Animal care is an incredibly serious commitment and one not to be taken lightly. The folks at Famous Fido do ask questions and do not instantly turn over their animals that day. I visited the cats a couple of times before adopting them and was given time to really think it over and prepare our home beforehand. When I went to visit them I was able to enter their space, see how they interact and play. No one hovered over me and told me which cats I should get. I actually appreciated this process because I got to know the animals. It was a bit of a process but they wanted to ensure the animals were going to a good home, which I deeply respect. Being a rescue they take in a lot of animals from rough situations and rehabilitate them and put them in a safe environment. One of the cats we adopted came in with serious health issues and they took care of all of her medical needs, she is now fully recovered to the sweetest cuddliest angel. I could not recommend Famous Fido enough. The cats that we adopted are well adjusted, well-behaved, and comfortable with socializing.Thank you, Famous Fido for helping our little guys be happy and heal before having people adopt them. This place should not be allowed to care for animals. They lie on their website about animals for adoption being up to date on vaccinations and if they've been spayed/neutered but don't tell you until you're already interested in a pet. The requirements to take home a pet are far more than the norm of any rescue.... and the place is absolutely filthy on top of all of it. I'm so happy we were able to get a dog out of there (even though they tried pushing back her pick up date two weeks the night before we were supposed to get her). read more

As a former volunteer at Famous Fido's, I can tell you that though I applaud Gloria's initiative to rescue animals off the streets she is a horrible shelter owner. Working my ass off for the time I was there only to be asked what I do there by Gloria. I did what was expected by a volunteer and to be questioned is highly disrespectful to not only me but all the other volunteers who have been working their hardest. After only a few weeks of verbal abuse and racist comments about Hispanics and other minorities, Gloria then proceeded to turn all the other older volunteers onto me. After years of running a shelter she only now wants to regulate who comes in and out of the shelter , get organized and adopt out the animals. She had no previous knowledge of running a shelter and jumped right into it right after running a pet bakery. She constantly mixes cats with dogs when she runs out of space and currently STILL MIXES SICK CATS IN WITH HEALTHY CATS CAUSING THEM TO GET SICK. She has no isolation rooms and does not take the time to remember new intakes and the current status of the cats and dogs she currently has. To add on, most of the people she adopts out to are white couples or mixed race couples with at least one white person being in the relationship. She has minorities jump through hoops to adopt a dog or a cat. The evidence is when my friend's family who are Muslim, fell in love with a cat whom they really wanted to adopt. Gloria then proceeded to question if their religion played into them treating the cat any different than a family member. I don't quite understand what their religion had to do with this question as why would they treat this cat differently if they traveled an hour to your shelter to visit this specific cat? A few weeks later my friend notifies me that Gloria nor any of the other employees have reached out to them regarding their application status. A month later after a lot of calls and talking to other volunteers to convince Gloria to adopt the cat out , she decides to finally give the cat to my friend. At the end of everything she still claims she still didn't want to give the cat away since they were Muslim. She constantly listens to Fox News and claims to know everything about the world and those who have a different skin color/ religion than her. It's very disappointing to know that there are a lot of minority adopters out there that are being turned away just because of their skin tone. The environment there among volunteers are extremely toxic . The time I was there a lot of the hardworking and amazing volunteers had left because of the toxic work environment. I later left for the same reasons. Many of the older volunteers will turn on you if you do not share the same right wing agenda and ideas as Gloria does and will criticize you for not dropping everything to be at the shelter 9-5. It's extremely disappointing and sad that both the great volunteers and animals that are there suffer from Gloria's negligent and racist behavior. Gloria is also lying to those who want to drop off animals to other shelters. There are a lot of non-kill shelters that those who no longer can care for animal or going through a rough time can surrender their animal. The only shelter that humanely euthanizes animals are animal control but other shelters have a great base of fosters available for surrendered animals. Other shelters have reached out to famous Fido regarding helping with fostering animals and even lightening the load for Gloria. But Gloria is known within the shelter community to not work well with others and even got removed from the CACC list of pulling animals from CACC. Which can be seen as an extreme example of how badly she runs her shelter. read more

I dropped off several cats at Famous Fido that they had pulled (rescued) from CACC...what an amazing facility they have! There are several separate areas for the cats all with plenty of perches for them. There is plenty of room in each area for the cats, not overcrowded at all. Every room was impeccably clean which in itself is a remarkable feat! They are doing a great service! read more

This is how they run things over at Famous Fido. We had re-home our cat because he was a health hazard to our son. Dominica claimed she was with Famous Fido, to which I called them and confirmed, so we released our cat to her. After a day of harassing me for money, she claims this wasn't through the rescue (even though she said it was) and claimed she couldn't help my cat. We would have been happy to take him back and find a loving home for him but she refused. This is how they treat people at Famous Fido. No compassion, no empathy. I just got off the phone shaking and in tears at the way I was just spoken to by Gloria - Yes Gloria, you emailed me, so I have your name - you refused to give it to me when I asked it, instead you said that "we're not a good fit" because you knew you screwed up with the incorrect info your were providing me and by speaking to me as you did. After waiting since July 10th to hear back from this agency, I received a call from a very sweet gentleman with the information that I would need in order to complete my application - which were basically pictures. I explained that I sent them, but he explained to me that for some reason they didn't attach. So I resent them in the meantime. He also told me that GLORIA would be calling me today (Monday at 3pm) - ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Gloria is condescending and argumentative to where she literally is speaking over me, only to say that I was doing that - she refused to allow me to speak or ask questions. She didn't have any of the correct info on the pup we were trying to adopt, I had to question it, to make sure we were speaking about the same animal, she simply continued to talk over me. She kept referring Coco as a male when it was a female, called the previous owners crazy, only to find out that the person had to go into a senior home and that's why the dog was given up. The entire time she kept saying how sick she was of getting calls all day about animals and telling me that she hates that this is happening. WHAT? The fact that I'm trying to adopt a senior dog. She literally made me feel like I was the reason she had all of these animals in her possession available to adopt. When I asked to speak with someone else, because I literally felt like she was trying to deter me from adopting Coco. She's offensive and does not seem to like her job after the 50 years she claims to be doing what she's doing. She should pass off the adoption process to someone less crazy and less determined to make people feel inferior about wanting to adopt. As a person that just lost one of my two rescued dogs, after 16 years of loving him, I will never recommend this place to anyone to adopt or rescue. I am absolutely heartbroken that the senior dog I wanted to adopt is still in this crazy woman's possession, along with all of the other animals that are being placed in her rescue. I spoke with Gloria who cussed me out and made me feel terrible for asking for help with my cat. She made me feel guilty for not knowing what to do and called me incompetent. I understand running a rescue shelter is stressful. But to make someone feel like absolute garbage for being out of options is unacceptable. She blamed me for everything I'm experiencing. My elderly father adopted an elderly cat from this shelter after his previous cat had to be euthanized due to health issues. After four days he became concerned because the cat stopped eating. He took the cat to his local pet hospital and was told that the cat was in late stages of renal failure. Because Famous Fido is a no kill shelter, these occurrences can happen. The cat was 14 years old. He took the cat back to Gloria and she refunded his money and had the cat cared for. It was an unfortunate situation but we feel was handled properly. read more

Since Gloria decided to "move" or change the name of her business because it was previously called "Happy Tails" I will repost my review of the horrible customer service I received here. Below is my original review of the incident that happened November 12, 2016 at this exact location. I posted screen shots of the original report made by the police officers. POLICE WERE CALLED A REPORT WAS MADE I've finally calmed down enough to write my review of the horrible customer service I received at Happy Tails on November 12, 2016. I brung my dog into the salon and was met by Gloria's husband Gino. I was told that the groomer was running late so I decided to wait so I could speak to her personally about what I wanted done with my dog. Gino took my dog to the back so he could get her prepped while waiting for the groomer. My boyfriend and I walked around a bit looking at the merchandise they had for sale while we waited for the groomer. While doing this we heard dogs growling, barking and yelping as if there was some sort of fight and then we heard Gloria yelling "STOP" and "GET BACK!" When I heard this I went to the back to make sure my dog was safe. Gloria told us to go back up front which we did. When Gloria finally came back up I told her I didn't feel comfortable with my dog staying there and that I wanted her so we could leave. From there Gloria began calling me a "spoiled brat" a "bit*h" and was saying how she hopes nothing ever happens to my dog. She finally gave me back my dog and as I was leaving her store she grabbed me by the back of my jacket and tried to pull me down!. From there the cops were called and a report was made. Cliff Notes: - If the dog adopters are interested in can't be adopted to a home with bigger dogs, list that in his online profile - If the adopter sends you the adoption application, discusses at length with you over the phone her living situation and experience with other dogs and you still deem that she cannot have that dog, don't tell her to come in. Simply suggest other dogs or another rescue - Treat potential adopters with dignity and respect, not like nuisances that you want to get rid of __________________________________________________ And here's my experience. You don't have to read this but at the very least, this was very cathartic for me: I don't really like to give negative reviews, or any reviews, really, but visiting this place really unsettled me. I've had the distinct pleasure of working in the animal rescue world since high school. I was employed as an adoptions counselor at a local rescue for 7 years and have continued on to foster many dogs and cats for several incredible animal welfare groups. I'm not tooting my own horn, I'm just sayin' I feel like I have the experience to back my opinion. My guy and I were interested in adopting a dog that would fit the following criteria: not likely to get adopted due to age, medical condition, etc. and ideally a Yorkie (the bf loves the breed having rescued several in the past and I won't begrudge him that considering how awesome and supportive he is of my love of fostering). We've got the experience and the finances to help out an overlooked dude and give him his forever, I don't think that's a bad thing. After a few days of perusing Petfinder, we stumbled upon a pup of interest. I did my due diligence. I filled out the adoption application, called ahead of time to discuss our situation with Gloria, and then came by when she told us to come by. When we walked in, we were barely acknowledged. Gloria asked if we had an appointment and I told her that she had told me to come by at this time and she could not remember. I once again explained our situation (we have 2 medium-sized dogs that are the picture of perfect foster sisters, having tolerated a variety of temperaments; I don't know how I got so lucky). I feel like we weren't going to be allowed to take this little guy one way or the other, but having 2 bigger dogs was her perfect out. She kept stressing that there's too big of a chance that he would be attacked. I told her he wouldn't be left alone with them if that made her uncomfortable and that we have a dog walker and he wouldn't be by himself for longer than 3 hours ever. Still not enough, and that's fine. I'm not going to ever argue shelter adoption policy. Second, she kept saying that he was clearly someone's dog as he had no teeth and was groomed. He had been with another family for 3 months and with Famous Fido for 1 and no one had responded to their efforts to find his home. Frankly, if it takes a dog owner 4 months to find their dog when its information is posted online and on flyers, I wouldn't feel comfortable returning the dog to the owner. Next, his health problems. His coat was grimy and unwashed, he was skinny, he has a heart murmur, he's toothless, and I'm no veterinary ophthalmologist but it looks like he has cataracts . I asked if an ultrasound was performed on his heart due to his murmur and was scoffed at and told they wouldn't spend that money since he was going to die soon any (I understand not wanting to perform a pricey procedure if it wouldn't change his medical treatment plan, I don't understand such a rude, belittling, and cold response). They've had him for a month and he's only had a physical done, no blood work or further diagnostics, which for an old man seems like a necessity to rule out any health problems that could be impacting his quality of life. We were told we couldn't have him but that we could sponsor him. I don't believe our application was ever reviewed. Other dogs weren't suggested to us, we weren't told that our application was declined, and the whole thing like felt like they wanted absolutely nothing to do with us. I left feeling judged, ignored, and insignificant and that is no way to treat people that are just doing their best to help the rescue community. read more

I drove an hour to go to Fido Rescue as I wanted to adopt a cat after loosing my 17 year old boy a month ago. How I wish I would have the Yelp reviews first! I believe Gloria loves her animals & wants to be sure they are going to a good home. But she totally lacks any bit of intuition when she is talking to you. She thinks she knows it all & no one else knows anything about animals. Through the years I have raised & loved 12 cats; all rescues; all from shelters. I have read & educated myself about felines because of my love for them, which I told her. But no, she continued to talk to me with NO RESPECT; like I was a 10 year old. Granted my visit was back while they were still operating on Clark Street north of Balmoral, but as much as I was trying to be polite and take a look at any of their dogs and cats, they rudely kept telling me I couldn't put my hand next to the cage and allow their cats a chance to sniff me, if they wanted to do so. No other shelter I've been to in Chicago, has been as bad as this place. Don't be fooled by their facade if it catches your eye on Irving Park Rd., or if you coincidentally live near here. RUN FAR AWAY from this shelter, and go to any other no kill shelter to adopt a cat. I'm glad most other reviews I'm seeing(on Yelp and outside of this site like Google), confirm my gut feeling that this is the only bad shelter I've been to in Chicago. Screw this place. read more

As soon as we walked in we smelled aroma spray mixed with an untaken care of environment. I understand shelters have dogs who use the bathroom so often but this place just smelled so bad. Meanwhile both ladies Gloria and another woman were just lounging. We asked if we could see the dogs that we saw online and she told us no. We had to file an application. Ok understood except she went on for about 10 mins rambling about other shelters and then she went on to judge us as if we were unexperienced and not serious about adopting a dog. This lady is so rude and we left feeling really bad for how she talked to us and for the dogs. I believe the other reviews that she is a hoarder and is just looking for a way to pay for her hoarding of dogs. Walked in here to see items they were selling only to be hit by the stench of the place. This is the most raggedy looking place I've ever seen, it's a mix of rundown thrift shop and animal shelter. Is anyone checking if this place is allowed to even have animals up for adoption? So far I've contacted paws and anti cruelty, next step is the alderman. Those employees watched us like hawks and I can only assume it's because they know they shouldn't have animals there. I called famous fido in hopes they would take in my sweet boy Starlove. Gloria asked me what was going on. I explained to her I was out of work with an injury not being paid. Starlove was originally thought to be a girl. When Star reached 1 he stared spraying horribly. I explained I tried so many places for low cost options but with covid none of them were taking regular appointments. You have to email and just wait. I had been waiting for over a month. Gloria really made sure I was serious about keeping Star. She flew into action like a pet superhero and saved my boy. 2 days later he was able to get shots microchipped and neutered. He is now home resting and recovering. Thank you gloria staff and all who donated to make the intervention program happen. So my cat caught a fish hook in her lip, and someone had mentioned this place to us so we went as an emergency and let me tell you the staff was amazing and you can tell that they cared, they were so polite and kind. Once they took our cat, is was a 1-2-3 process, didnt even have to wait long, my cat was looking like nothing happened to her. I'm so grateful for this place, they literally treat your pet like if it's their own. I would highly recommend this place and I'm definitely going back. read more

My names Trisha , I'm from lake Station Indiana and I this is a short story about my 8year old Boxer Lip . A few weeks ago I got a new pool and I had an over flow the water contained cholrine as well as other harmful chemicals we are first time pool owners and I believe he drank some of the over flowed water . One day he peed in my house right at my feet and I knew something was so wrong he never did that before .We seen a vet in a nearby city and it looked grim because they didn't know why his sodium was so high we treated him for 24 hours and the next day when we picked him up he was at deaths door we were broke at this point having already paid 1000. I woke up Monday morning after keeping him alive through the weekend and called everywhere looking for help everyone said no except Gloria Lissner of Famous Fido Rescue ... she took a chance on my dogs life and I was so thankful she knew I needed my story to end well and she helped me not even knowing me and I don't even live in Chicago. One phone call with her and in minutes she changed my situation that I thought was hopeless , she gave my dog a chance to survive with treatment he desperately needed .she paid over 1000 and I was so thankful , he ended up passing in my arms at home after so much love and care because of her . I'm forever greatful she answered my call she didn't have to but she did . We are forever thankful for such a wonderful soul . This world needs more people like Gloria Lissner . Im in agreement with review written by Lexie. I have my suspicions about this place as a legitimate animal rescue. I went here years ago to try to adopt a dog and the owner seemed to be putting me off on adopting rather than to even try and do any vetting of me (I'm a lifetime pet owner, whose dogs live to be ripe old ages and receive regular veterinary care) so that I could adopt. For the record, it was Ms. Lessner that seemed to be discouraging me from adopting the dog I was interested in. I have mixed feelings about her. I feel like she may be an animal hoarder, someone who genuinely loves animals but doesn't quite understand that you have to put the animal's overall well-being ahead of your own need to acquire them for whatever psychological or financial reason you have. She doesn't quite get how though she's saved them, she's not allowing them to thrive. She also seems to just be a plain bad business owner or someone that went the animal "rescue" route to save a failing pet store. I also had a neighbor who was discouraged from adopting a dog (a breed she had experience with) from here, but was told she could "sponsor" the dog. And by the way, had that dog been adopted to that neighbor, he probably would've been sleeping in a satin dog bed and eating filet mignon. That neighbor loved and spoiled her dogs rotten. The same neighbor drove 500 miles overnight to get a dog from death row. Out of curiosity, I've checked in on this place from time to time online and their dogs seem to be there for years upon years. I wonder if that's why so many are "bonded pairs" in this place. In addition to the overwhelming urine smell, many of the dogs were filthy and had very long nails. You can't tell me you've been in the rescue business since the 1970s and don't know how to groom an animal or at minimum give it a bath and nail trim. I can forgive that this place doesn't give its animals the medical care it needs if it doesn't have the funding, because it saved them from a kill shelter. But I can't understand why then they seem to withhold these animals from being adopted at a reasonable cost to someone who then would be able to take the animal for veterinary care. The place seems to hoard animals as a means of propping them up for "sponsorship" dollars. I feel bad for any animal that has the misfortune to end up here. read more
