My husband randomly stumbled upon this place when googling dog shelters, and I am SOOO ecstatic we stepped inside! Their shelter makes it so easy to walk and spend time with the babies, unlike many other shelters I've been to. They WANT their dogs to receive the love you have to give, so you're able to go in and walk one dog, five dogs, twenty dogs.... whatever you have time for! After stopping in here four times over the course of two weekends, we were pretty set on which dog we loved, but wanted to foster first to ensure he was a good fit. The foster-to-adopt option was amazing, and helped us adjust and adapt to our pup. Gabrielle was probably the most helpful person I've ever worked with. She walked us through what to expect, was easily reachable via text/email, and quelled all of my little fears. She knows her stuff and is definitely a blessing to the shelter! Honestly (and I know everyone says this!), we have the BEST dog in the world. He is patient, calm, easily trainable, the most loving (I mean seriously, he hugs people!), and just the most wonderful dog I've ever met. I wouldn't hesitate for a single second if you're thinking about adopting your next family member. Chicago canine rescue is the place to do it!

Laney (sp?) such a good girl & sweetheart

I met Laney Monday a 3-4 year old boxer that was a sweetheart with a great temperament. I went back today and Laney is gone. She was adopted and hopefully she found a good home . I'm happy for her she's a sweet dog that's very friendly and listens good. Whoever got her is lucky they got a great dog. Today is Thursday and the second time I went to walk a dog from Chicago Canine. I got Dino a mixed breed hound about 6 months old. You could tell he was still a puppy by the way he walked kind of gangly. He was a very well behaved puppy and was very curious checking out everything and everybody. He wanted to interact with the other dogs, but the Chicago Canine doesn't want the dogs from the outside to interact w/dogs from the The shelter THIRD TIME - 3 dogs Dog 1 - Dillinger a male pit approximately 2 years old about 65lbs (didn't want treats) Dog 2 - Tweed - a tiny little thing (smaller then a cat) so friendly to people and kids. Very well behaved on a leash. Dog 3 - Sweet Potato - a mixed breed dog. Very well behaved with people and other dogs. Sure knows what treats are

We had a Wonderfull experience adopting from CCR in February 2021. We went on their website and identified a few dogs we would like to meet, filled out the online paperwork and received confirmation within 24 hours and then set up a time to go to the shelter. The process is super easy. Gabrielle was our contact and she could not have been more helpful. When we met Gabrielle we first sat down and talked about our lifestyle and what would be a good fit. Gabrielle identified a couple of dogs and brought them to us to have an introduction. She gave us time to make a decision and we adopted a sweet wonderful boy.

The ignorant staff gave my dog away without checking ownership or the microchip that was in my name. I tried and tried to contact someone to resolve this and was lied to repeatedly about the manager not being on the premises. Until I finally caught her (the coward) They are obviously more concerned about adoption fees than they are about getting my dog back of 2 1/2 years. I love you and I miss you Coy .

Words cannot describe the joy we had got from visiting CCR. We were looking to adopt and looking for a dog a bit older. We visited many shelters and have had terrible experience in particular with Paws. We did more research and found CCR. We stopped in during their available time to see the dogs and fell in love with the staff and the environment. They are very helpful and eager to get a the pups a forever home. We walked in and felt the homey feel. Being younger and having a kid seems to not leave a good impression at many shelters but at CCR this was not the case. They were very informative on what dog would best fit our family without an issue. If and when you find a dog you like they allow you to walk the dog and get comfortable. (They always look for walker volunteers) We fell in love with a precious Aspen as she's been an amazing addition. Key pointers: adoption takes about a week. - Reference and proof of housing. - adoption fee of around $300 unless sponsored. Donate Donate Donate. They have the best staff

Update: Shelter isn't even close to meeting BBB standards for Charity Accountability. Full Report: https://www.bbb.org/chicago/Charity-Reviews/charity-animal-protection/chicago-canine-rescue-in-jefferson-pk-il-90006782/print It's not the fault of the shelter pets when the people who represent them let them down. Hope they get their act together. Original Review: Perhaps we caught them on an off day, but both I and another family who visited yesterday had an exceptionally poor experience with Greg, who was working behind the counter. He was unable--and frankly visibly unwilling--to answer questions I had about an available pet at the shelter after I had taken her for a walk. Then he "strongly urged" me to go home (?) and fill out an online application. He also stated that there were no additional applicants and that he had called his manager to let her know that the initial meeting had taken place. I asked if they had an application I could fill out there. Nope, but I was "welcome to fill one out on my phone in the waiting area." Funny guy, Greg. The family behind me, also apparently summarily dismissed by Greg, told me outside that they also felt rushed out the door. The staff interaction was just a bummer. So Greg was a little smug and off-putting. No big deal. I had written ahead about this specific dog, cruised all the way over there, and had a great time meeting her. Undeterred, I went home and filled out the online application as instructed. Then, this afternoon, I got an email from an adoption counselor telling me that the dog had been placed in a "foster-to-permanent" home (with a cat?) and asking if I was interested in another dog. Huh. How do you go from no applicants to placement in less than a day with your (allegedly) rigorous background and placement process? Maybe the Gregster knew this and was trying to discourage additional applicants? Not sure. I do believe that transparency helps in situations like these though. I have had great experiences sharing my home with shelter dogs in the past. In the future, I think I'll revisit those organizations. They seem to actually have their act together. I didn't have confidence in this one. Fair enough, that's based on a sample size of one employee interaction, but sometimes that's all it takes.

I've never adopted a dog from CCR (yet!) But I've had a really good experience volunteering to walk dogs. I'd highly recommend it if you want to get a little exercise and help the pups work off some of their energy and (hopefully) stress. Bring an ID, close toed shoes. It's very quick and easy to get walking. Each dog is different, so don't be afraid to let them know how experienced you are if you want a dog who is a little easier to walk for your first time!!

Here's Ozzy, our sweet sweet boy!

They take in animals that need a lot of vet care and make sure they get it and are healed. I've always seen great care and cleanliness at Red Door. I've adopted "many" rabbits and had a dumped cat under my deck that needed to go somewhere and they took him. This place is totally amazing! I've always been treated with the utmost kindness. I've seen them treat everyone like this. Thank you Red Door for your persistent dedication to saving animals! I've seen guinea pigs, ducks and dogs that go into foster homes. My experience here was as a volunteer. Every time I came in to help, I was made to do common room…read more(the main rabbit and cat room). It was always filthy, many of the fleeces were covered in so much fur that I was worried about the rabbits getting a blockage, water bowls were often fully empty or had literal soap suds in them. The volunteer coordinator suggests you "spot clean" the litter boxes, though often they are so saturated that the pellets they use as litter are disintegrated. It put a bad taste in my mouth that staff was not following the basic "contact time" instructions on the bottles of Rescue when they claimed they wanted to kill bacteria. They kept a sick cat with giardia in a cage first thing when you walked in. He had a sign that said not to touch him, but not what he had. I saw senior staff repeatedly handle iso animals with no gloves. I saw them put iso laundry right into a pile with the other laundry more than once. I found a wet pile of laundry with feces (or litter, according to the literal president -- not sure that's better) stuck to it sitting on top of the dryer. I was written up for making staff "feel bad" about not knowing how to disinfect stuff when they claim to have vet tech experience, and for not being nice enough about the "litter" on the wet pile of laundry. I saw other volunteers regularly mix in BnB laundry with shelter laundry -- with what I would consider a homeopathic amount of bleach. They were not chastised for doing laundry incorrectly. In fact, they were allowed to train me on laundry. I tried to report a possible historical ringworm infection to the staff just so they knew to be mindful to check themselves and animals for sores, but instead got met with bizarre legalistic stuff about how I might as well be suggesting that I could have gotten it from "invisible space aliens" (that's from the president directly). Look at these photos and tell me if you think it's insane to think someone could catch a fungal infection here. I was then banned -- again, the stated, written reason being that I disagree with their veterinary practices and they've been doing this for 26 years blah blah blah. Ok. I'm really worried about how much else has been swept under the rug in 26 years, then. The president was so cruel to me when banning me that I immediately went to urgent care for medical clearance. The NP was grossed out and suspicious when I told him I got yelled at for trying to let them know about a possible exposure. Staff here does nothing but bully people if they trust you enough to let their true colors show. I have personally heard them do it about sexual orientation, weight, and ethnicity -- they even had rabbits with antisemitic names they got from Seinfeld (they are not Jewish themselves). They stood silently by while a senior volunteer made fun of my sexual orientation the first time I met her, even. They do not have a pride flag hanging anywhere. I wish they would change that, because maybe there would be fewer homophobic and transphobic comments. Though everyone here reflexively "punches down" so much due to their low self esteem that it seems they can't even keep track of what they say. Just know that if you have a certain skin tone, everyone here older than 40 with a sensible haircut has an opinion about your hair being "unprofessional" if you do anything but make it as straight as possible. I grew up in a hoarded house, and I have to be honest. That's what this shelter feels like and part of why I wanted to help. They cannot keep up with the animals at all, especially not while running HareBnB. Over the holidays, for maybe 3 full cumulative weeks of the year, volunteers handle everything in the shelter except paperwork and isos. No one is properly trained -- in fact, I trained several people after doing common room only ONE time. But these photos were taken when BnB wasn't busy. This is what their performance looked like when they had one more staff member than they do currently and very few BnB guests. And I heard the president and VP talk about buying more BnB space as a potential for the future! I don't have a rabbit currently, but if I did, I would not trust BnB. I am telling everyone I know with rabbits not to board at BnB. For a while, they were the only game in town, but now you can do better. I had already stopped finding joy in volunteering, because as soon as I would come in, the volunteer coordinator would sit at a computer and pretend to look at spreadsheets. That would devolve into hours of me hearing her talking and laughing while I did what would've been her assigned work. No thanks. As you can see, there's clearly enough to be done that we both needed to be working at the same time. I would love to see them change ownership and find a crew really dedicated to the mission instead of dedicated to doing a bit less than the bare minimum. It seems like this shelter used to be good, but maybe it was just the quirkiness of a bunny shelter.

Considering that they got over 6 million dollars from the City of Evanston, I am very unhappy with their poor communications and the fact that they are only open to the public for about 2 hours a day. One of the two cats I adopted turned out to have obstructive airway disease and since they were in charge of my two cats for months, one would have thought that would have been disclosed. The medication cost over $2,000 that first year because what was prescribed was not off patent and the cat was too obese to take prednisolone safely. Why was my cat obese? Ask them. Further when I asked if I could donate the huge cat carriers back to them and some food bowls they gave me (since I already had those items) they refused them as if they have all the money in the world to buy new supplies, other shelters would have jumped at the opportunity, a donation in kind of about $100. I applied to volunteer and heard nothing from them for over 2 months after emailing and messaging them following up on my status, to no avail, until I had to actually go in there to find out what was happening. I could go on but in my opinion this is an organization that is not managed well and they could do much more with the funds that they have been given. I'm pretty sure, imho, that they will ask some pals or cronies to add some high star reviews to try to balance out the negative ones, of which there are quite a few, but all I can do is try to get them to get their act together there by posting this. Finally, as to others here saying that some people there are rude, I completely agree. It is not a pleasant experience. If they try to get more taxpayer funding without improvement of their management, I intend to go down to City Hall to cite my many reservations about this organization. Update on 2/18/25: I stand by my review in spite of the response from EAS: To EAS I respond as follows: Unfortunately the cats were obese from a medical standpoint so you may want to consult with a veterinarian on animal obesity. I note that you did not post the photo of one of them I emailed to you after he had some cat nip the first night I got them, but chose the "skinny" video :) so I posted my photo of one of the big boys I adopted. Further, it is my understanding that my cats were elsewhere in foster care under your auspices until they were put into my care as fosters. If you take no responsibility for their care when at foster locations, that could be problematic, especially for them, since you foster out many animals. As to communications issues: I sent an email Sept 8, 2021 asking about a vet. No response to that. I found a vet myself and did not contact you again until early Dec this year when I put in a volunteer application. No response to that. On Jan 7, I sent a followup email asking the status. No response to that. After that I wrote a msg to your Facebook page. A day or two later someone answered and said she would follow up with the dog volunteer area. I waited approximately a week and still had no answer. I wrote again to see if anyone heard from the dog volunteer group, but received no reply. Growing quite annoyed with the runaround, a few days ago I decided to walk over to EAS and find out what was going on, which I did. I told The person there, also the person who did not answer my email of Sept 8, 2021 that I had emailed and messaged and gotten no reply so decided to walk in. He told me I must be mistaken as EAS has no email address posted on its website and was rather brusque (rude, in my perception in addition to being uninformed) gave me no apology and then insisted I must have emailed a vet with a similar practice name to EAS. He subsequently agreed to follow up, nevertheless. Moreover, with regard to my claim of poor communication, there was a post on your facebook page not long ago telling the public that people have been rude to EAS staff/volunteers when they don't get back to them and how they shouldn't be because everyone is so busy( too busy to hire volunteers who might answer phones, I guess.) If EAS cannot acknowledge the problem, it certainly will not be fixed. Re: funding: So it didn't go into your pocket, you say, but why spend 6 million dollars so you can be open approximately 2 hours a day to the public? I certainly hope the number of adoptions skyrocket going forward , you train people not to be rude (as mentioned here and elsewhere in reviews) and you answer communications because certainly the Evanston taxpayers should see something for their generous funding of your large facility.

As someone who adopted 2 excellent cats from Famous Fido, I can not give enough credit for all their work. Animal care is an incredibly serious commitment and one not to be taken lightly. The folks at Famous Fido do ask questions and do not instantly turn over their animals that day. I visited the cats a couple of times before adopting them and was given time to really think it over and prepare our home beforehand. When I went to visit them I was able to enter their space, see how they interact and play. No one hovered over me and told me which cats I should get. I actually appreciated this process because I got to know the animals. It was a bit of a process but they wanted to ensure the animals were going to a good home, which I deeply respect. Being a rescue they take in a lot of animals from rough situations and rehabilitate them and put them in a safe environment. One of the cats we adopted came in with serious health issues and they took care of all of her medical needs, she is now fully recovered to the sweetest cuddliest angel. I work with shelters and rescues throughout the city and have never experienced anything like this. The litter boxes were filthy, cages and kennels appeared far too small and poorly maintained, and several animals looked visibly unhealthy. The air quality alone made it difficult to stay inside for more than a few minutes, and I can only imagine what prolonged exposure is doing to the animals living there daily. What disturbed me most was that the environment did not feel like a safe, organized rescue focused on rehabilitation and adoption. It felt chaotic, overcrowded, and neglected. There was clutter and obstacles throughout the space, making it feel more like a hoarding situation than a proper animal rescue facility. These animals deserve clean living conditions, proper care, medical attention, and a real chance at finding loving forever homes.
