Pinellas County Animal Services - The dog taemin really happy

The conditions at the animal shelter are deeply concerning; the dogs appear forlorn and neglected,…read moreseemingly deprived of outdoor access. The odor in the dog area is overwhelming, reminiscent of decay, making it unbearable for visitors. My sister and I found it impossible to remain in that section due to the repugnant atmosphere. In stark contrast, the cat area was the only part that appeared to be maintained (reason for one star). It is disheartening to see the staff, many of whom were idly seated at computers, failing to address the needs of the dogs. This facility either requires immediate closure or a complete overhaul in leadership to ensure genuine care and effort are prioritized. County commissioners, your attention is urgently needed. Very sad.

Potential adopter was denied. Animal control euthanized the dog on Jan 10, 2025 because dog was old and arthritic. Did I mention there was someone who WANTED TO ADOPT THE DOG????? Shame on animal control for denying this dog a compassionate owner. Also, this potential adopter went immediately to the park when she saw the dog had been abandoned and told Animal Control that she would adopt and provide all needed care for the dog. This has broken the hearts of everyone who was worried about this dog and were prepared to donate towards any needed costs of care.

We lost our two 16-year-old rescue dogs recently and were looking to adopt another rescue…read more Petfinder led us to New Horizon Dog Rescue in St. Pete, and we had a great experience. It was clear from the beginning that all of the dogs at New Horizon get incredible care, and that the rescue has done a lot of research on optimal nutrition and vaccinations. Since we were adopting a 5-month old puppy we also appreciated that the rescue does a lot of behavioral work (e.g. getting pups used to other dogs, to cats, to fireworks.) After indicating interest on Petfinder we were contacted quickly by New Horizon, and had a meet-and-greet almost immediately. We appreciated that the rescue wanted to meet us and evaluate if we were a good fit. The application process was straight forward but thorough. We also appreciate that the rescue wanted to be sure our puppy had recovered sufficiently from being spayed before releasing her to our care. The rescue provided helpful information on diet and vaccinations, and sent us home with some starter treats and probiotics. All signs of just how much they care about all of the dogs in their care. The puppy we adopted has been a ray of sunshine in our lives, and well behaved and adjusted for a 5-month old. We would definitely recommend New Horizon Dog Rescue.

This was in 2014 and I had to put him to sleep last September my heart still aches but we had 11 and a half wonderful years together that I will never forget. I learned so much about life and dogs and I'm very grateful to this rescue for bringing us together. His name was Walter, named by the rescue and I didn't change it.
