I adopted a senior dog from SAL a few years back, her name was Sunny. Turns out, she was well trained, respectable in our home and she was very good on her leash. My experience with the rescue was great as they took care of the details and we had no issues. Sunny may have been a senior, but she had so much love to give and I felt lucky to have her in my life right up to her last minute. A lot of people don't understand how hard the people work and care for the animals at a rescue, not to mention many rescues run on only volunteers! I mention this because Sunny had great care and love before I found her at SAL, so thank you to anyone who helped her get to me! read more

We went to this shelter with two kittens we found and they asked us if we had an appointment and we didn't so they couldn't take them in and then recommended animal services. Thankfully we went to humane society of Pinellas county first and they were friendlier and more willing to help. Human society also couldn't take them in because they were still too little but told us not to take them to animal services because they're only open until 1pm on Saturdays and if the kittens didn't get adopted by then they have to be euthanized since they aren't allowed to keep them there for more than 24hrs! Human society told us other places and alternatives and even said if the kittens could eat wet food next week they can try and take them in at that time. Thankfully we did find a place for the kittens at the end of the day. read more

Knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. This place was well staffed and very clean. I came in looking for a puppy and one of the staff discussed how to do that! However, I saw a very handsome Shepard chocolate lab mix (at least thats what he looked like to me) and I ended up asking about his story! Well, the next day I was back to foster him... Unprofessional, discriminatory & outright unpleasant. The foundation of the non-profit is great. Rescuing & finding animals homes is extremely important. I felt discriminated against & profiled by Linda & Jeanne N. One of them even attempted to take my photo while I wasn't looking. Also, after reading many other stories about adoptions from Suncoast, it looks like many medical conditions are not clearly stated (worms, feline herpes). We got our gorgeous and sweetest little kitty from here who was about 5 months old when we adopted him. He's the love my of life and the most well mannered cat i've ever had! (i've had about 4 cats in the past leading up to this one). We renamed him Willow and I cant be any happier. Just spoke with the "president" volunteer of this location called "carol", as I was calling trying to find some vital information for my pet . And was told "I don't want to take any of your time ".... Then she stated "actually I don't want you to take any of my time ". I would not reccomend this location to anyone as the staff or volunteers DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR PETS. Questions are questions for a reason and if I don't know something I'm going to ask. Aswell she stated the location was moving to Hudson, and I would like to state that once the location arrives there. was going to adopt a dog that I can provide a great life for, drove an hour to pick her up. The temporary foster brought the dog in about 30 minutes late for the appointment and made it obvious from the beginning she did not want us to adopt the dog. First she said the dog needed to be with kids, took care of that with grandkid. then advised she would need to be active, advised we had frisbee and ball and played with the dog. Then she said the dog did not play with toys. I took my senior dog who is about 20 pounds overweight per the Vet. she made a very rude comment that she didn't want the dog to end up like my senior dog. I adopted her when she was 8 weeks and she is very active and well cared for. The person in charge decided we would be great with the dog. this foster went to speak with her and they changed their mind. the moral of the story is we are over 60 and this person committed age discrimination. We had the perfect home in the country with a lot to offer all of our animal. the questions they asked were do you take the dogs out with you like to bars and festivals. No we take them to the State park on walks and to the beach fishing. i Am adopting a dog from a non discriminatory shelter. I wish them luck in the future. read more

While I respect this organization's commitments to ensuring that their animals go to loving and safe homes, I had an incredibly unpleasant experience with one of the coordinators who handles the adoptions. I, unfortunately, cannot recall her name, however, I spoke with her over the phone to acquire information regarding one of the cats up for adoption. She informed me that this specific kitten's foster mom had very specific requirements regarding the household that she would like this kitten to end up in. This is totally understandable, I had no issue with this whatsoever. However, as the phone call progressed the coordinator I was speaking with became increasingly condescending, even cutting herself off to ask me "are you even 21? you sound really young" (taking into consideration the unpleasant tone with which this was said). I informed her that I was indeed above the age of 21, brushing past this comment in which the second part was entirely unnecessary. I can't control how my voice sounds? lol. Regardless, I told her that it seemed it would not be a good fit as I am not in a house with children or other animals, but that I appreciated her time. She then proceeded to claim that cats should (verbatim) "never" be given to households without these particular qualifications, which is very much an ignorant, blanket statement. Loving homes look many different ways. I told her that's one opinion but I appreciated the information. Once again, I respect the commitment to ensuring the animals go to loving, happy homes, however, I did not appreciate the condescending tone in which I was spoken to with, as well as the fact that it seems as though there is the possibility for this organization to deny cats of loving homes simply because there is no children in the house. Once again, I know that certain foster moms have specific requirements (this I respect and understand), it was the Suncoast Animal League coordinator that I spoke to that I took issue with. read more

If I could give them 100 stars I would, they deserve it!!! Suncoast Animal League is my favorite organization. We volunteer and foster when we can. Everyone that volunteers is extremely friendly. They have several fundraising events throughout the year and we always go if we can. They are tucked on the side downtown palm harbor. It's a very small shelter but if you are looking for a new family member please give a suncoast animal a chance! We visited their cat room today and they had tons of adorable friendly cats that need a home. Adopt! If you can't adopt, foster. If you can't foster, donate. If you can't donate, volunteer. I don't know how their adoption program works but I was suggested that I try to ask them for help with my mothers dog that she can no longer take care of. Not only can you not reach anyone by phone, but if you do get somebody by email, they send you to somebody else. Wow. What an eye-opener. Went there on a Saturday with my wife to see if we could be a match to give a dog a loving place in our family, as we're currently semi-taking care of my son's girlfriend's dog, but it will be moving out with her to her new place shortly, and will have a void (in a good way). My wife and I both work from home, and in years past, we've fostered, as well as adopted a couple of older dogs, and gave them love up until their very end. Our son, who lives with us is a Certified Veterinary Tech has been staff at two veterinary hospitals. In other words, you would be hard-pressed to find a more ideal home to rescue a dog. Halfway in the door were stopped with the most unfriendliest, stern, woman who asked questions to bait us to say something to refuse us entrance (she went with "none of the dogs here get along with other dogs" and "most are coming off heartworm treatment" completely ignoring the fact that there would be no other dogs at our home.) We asked if we could fill out the paperwork so we could come back at a later date when our timing was better; still standing to block our entering, her answer was "no"--she said it's all done at the time of adoption. Still being blocked in the doorway, my wife wanted to know more, but I told her I felt too unwelcomed to ever go near that place ever, ever, again--EVER. We want to do--and have done--the right thing and give a surrendered dog a loving home, but this place made us understand why people end up going to breeders to get their pets, as they almost literally pushed us out the door. I suppose it's a good thing that available dogs are down in numbers overall, but this place practically threw us to a breeder. I would give these people zero stars, but the Yelp form wouldn't let me. To Suncoast: If you're going to be that way, just put a CLOSED sign on the door so no one has to waste their time--or yours. Sheesh. read more

There are several locations for this wonderful establishment. Recently Our Family adopted a 4 month old kitten from there who was rescued in July and taken very good care of. My boyfriend and i fostered then adopted our golden mix from SAL, which they saved from another local county animal rescue- even trhough they didnt technically have much space at the shelter. Will never adopt from them again! We had a kitten for two months and he has now passed on. From the moment we brought him home, he was sick. We spent over a thousand dollars in medical bills. My husband was VERY reluctant to adopt from here because he felt that it did not appear clean - both inside and out. Additionally, there was communication issues the whole time with them - phone calls not returned and questions unable to be answered. I know they are volunteer based, but I still feel they do not operate under the best practices. When we get over our heartbreak and decide to get another kitten, we will be going elsewhere. In my opinion, I hate to give a bad review to a place that is helping to place animals in need, but on the other hand, I feel their cons outweigh their pros. Please make sure your animal is in good health before taking them home from this organization in order to avoid yourself the heartbreak that we had If I could give them zero stars I would. read more

I went two weeks ago to donate items and not one person even said hello or asked if I needed help. After carrying around sheets and other towels a very young girl finally asked me if I needed help. . People sitting at their desks where the cages were - not one even smiled! Strange very strange - not sure if I will return. I walked around looking at the cats and dogs and no one spoke to me! The young girl who helped me was very nice and I could see that there were about 10 - 12 volunteers there. When I was leaving I stopped to look at a small dog and a lady finally spoke to me.
