I am absolutely in love with this place. It has a family feel, you feel like people who are appreciated, remembered, missed and welcome each time. I have 2 kids on spectrum who I'm always nervous can't stay on task like the typical kids, or who may look different. Everyone is appreciated for their hard work. There is no criticism, there is always praise, recognition and corrections are done in a discrete private way so kids don't even feel like they're doing things "wrong". Karate dave is a kid whisperer! Heck he's a people whisperer, the kids and parents can't help but hang on every word and direction he gives. He's stern but fun and he "sees" each kid, and the kids recognize that. He makes connections with them that come so natural to him. You can tell that he is all about the kids. I love listening to my kids being taught integrity, responsibility and self control. I currently have 3 kids enrolled and we are going on 2 months loving it! There are tables for parents to sit at, or chairs around whole mat. They welcome parents to help kids or hold up sparring mits for kids. There's an area with a fish tank, books and little chairs for siblings who may need to be kept busy and I believe they have a playground out their back door too :) read more

My three kids have been going to Karate Dave back when he was teaching class at Master Coronas. Now that he has his own school, I have also starting going to the family classes with them. We go 2 days a week for the family class and then on friday for sparring class. I stay 1 night a week for the adult class. My kids love it(they have all earned 5 belts under Karate Dave) and I am totally hooked. I am getting in great shape and learning awesome moves at the same time. After much reflection and conversation with, not only my husband but many of the parents that attended a party at All Star Karate where we were guests yesterday, I feel that it is necessary for me to share our extremely negative experience. I wouldn't normally post a negative review but I feel it's my duty as a mother to share our experience as part of "Mom Code" so that you can be vigilant in what your children are exposed to. A little backstory before I share what happened yesterday.  My child, had his 5th birthday party at All Star Karate in Peoria just a few weeks ago. The party host was a younger gentleman who was enthusiastic, pleasant and made the party incredible for everyone. I'm fact, it was such a great experience for every guest, our friend decided to host her party at All Star Karate in Peoria too. My children came to the party expecting a similar experience, unfortunately that was not the case. Instead of the instructor that led my son's party, the instructor for this party was the owner, "Karate Dave". Let me preface this by saying I understand a karate institution to expect obedience and respect during classes and support that, but this was a child's birthday party and some leniency would be expected, especially given our past experience with my own son's party. Here is what transpired during the party: *"Karate Dave" was creating excitement for the birthday party. Tapping kids on the head with pool noodle type objects (which also happened at my son's party so this is the customary for their parties and was fun for the kids for the most part - the little ones didn't quite understand it but the majority of the children were enjoying this part of the class) *"Karate Dave" asked the whole party if they were ready, and all the kids responded with great enthusiasm, screaming "YA!!!" He asked the kids to respond again, but without screaming, all the kids still yelled "YA!" *"Karate Dave" walked directly over to my child, grabbed him by the shirt, pulled him off the mats and scolded my son in front of the entire party "you are not allowed to participate until you have good behavior!" *Every parent and child was shocked by "Karate Dave's" reprimand of my 5 year old child. The party vibe changed and everyone became vigilant in watching the rest of the interactions with "Karate Dave". *I stepped over to my sobbing child to comfort him from the public embarrassment and physical contact of Karate Dave. (We went to the bathroom, where I held my crying child and explained to him that even adults over react and make big mistakes. This was a huge life lesson for my child that I'm sure will having lasting impact). *I went over to the receptionist and the party host, who is our friend, and explained how out of line "Karate Dave" was. *I also talked with many of the other parents, and also with the birthday parent and they all agreed that "Karate Dave's" actions were unexpected and unfounded. *Once the party subsided and people were eating cake I approached "Karate Dave" and said that he not only owed my child an apology, but that he was way out of line, especially during a child's birthday party. "Karate Dave" leaned over to my child and mumbled a quiet apology, "hey man, I'm sorry. I probably over-reacted. Do you forgive me?" My son nodded his head and said ok. (Proud mommy moment; teaching my child forgiveness and learning to persevere in uncomfortable situations). *This was a 5 year old child attending a birthday party, and all the children at the party were excited and expressing genuine enthusiasm for the birthday boy and his party!   *I was within feet of my child the entire party and never once was his behavior out of line. The other parents agreed; there was no behavior exhibited from any child in the party that required any type of reprimand. Thankfully, I was was paying attention and was able to swiftly move in to comfort my child in this humiliating incident. I urge and suggest to all parents to think twice before taking your child to All Star Karate in Peoria. I want to close this review by saying that I gave this a lot of consideration before posting, decided to take a night to sleep on it to see if some distance and time would change my perspective, and I conversed with a multitude of people about this post to get as much insight as possible from other people. The bottom line is that we have to protect our children and the impact of a child focused learning environment like, All Star Karate in Peoria, is that no child should ever be physically reprimanded or publicly humiliated to prove a point.   The receptionist did explain to us "Karate Dave" doesn't usually do parties. After this humiliating experience, I don't think "Karate Dave" has any business interacting with children at all. read more

Dave is a great instructor and they have created a fantastic environment for the kids and adults. We have followed Karate Dave from his previous offerings in the community to his current dojo in Peoria in order to continue the excellent teaching for our daughter and son. From my experiences, I believe the very best characteristics of studying the martial arts are found at this school. It also feels good to support a family business rather than a corporation. Dave connects with the students in a very meaningful way, firm but encouraging. His wife Lisa helps with camps, birthday parties, and works in the front office. Even their son is involved as an upper level student and assistant. Being a martial arts instructor at one time myself, I couldn't think of a better place for my daughter to start her martial arts training. All-Star Karate has a comfortable, family type atmosphere. The children are taught respect and discipline inside and outside the dojo. The instructors do a great job of keeping the classes fun, while still maintaining the needed structure and increasing the difficulty levels in each child as they grow in their abilities. Speaking from experience, this isn't an easy task considering the different age levels and amount of diversity in each class. This is the first sport my daughter has participated in that she hasn't grown bored with, or complacent in. She looks forward to learning and trying new things, and is proud of her progress. She wants to earn her black belt, and move on to Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai in the future. I strongly recommend All-Star Karate for families from all walks of life. read more

My 6 year old daughter is very athletic but very quiet. We drove by this karate studio and she said, "Mommy i want to do karate!" It was the first time she had ever asked to do a sport... I looked into it- they offer a month free to start with no strings attached.. so I thought what did i have to lose? We gave it a try, and it's the best decision I could've made for her! In just 2 months she has come out of her shell and absolutely loves going here! Her coaches Alex and Dave are so supportive and give positive feedback to all the kids, as well as corrective feedback when needed. This is the coolest karate studio! Two of my boys go here, and they love it! Karate Dave is wonderful with the kids. He is teaching them self defense and respect all while having a great time. The whole family is welcome to stay and watch, and there is a playground if you have little ones that are not in the class. My oldest son participated in a summer camp here as well. I was very impressed by how Karate Dave ran the Little Ninja class, from the amount of material covered to his attention to each student, making sure they were continuously engaged and respectful. Not enough diversity. I had bought a 10 session package from Amazon Local. I went in and felt immediately uncomfortable with the male owner. I feel he didn't connect well with my child. I feel it was a race issue. To be in a predominantly Hispanic area, he would need to be more open minded. My child is African American and proud of it and never do I want my baby going to a place that has a problem with that. I would not recommend if you are a minority. I don't think he likes them.
