It is nothing but a miracle that I met Mohammad Abuershaid. My family had the unpleasant experience of the LA County Department of Children and Family Services (herein CPS). Apparently, one in three kids get involved in a CPS investigation in the United States. In the beginning, we originally thought that cooperating with the CPS Social Worker III was the right thing to do; we were dealing with a fairly young-career County employee, who was very gungho and seemingly was more focused on some agenda or her performance review rather than facts. I was not going to let the negligence of this Social Worker, in what I believed to be lack of training on her part, to make a mountain out of a molehill. We initially left a voicemail to Mo and other lawyers after receipt of the Detention Report, and he was the only one who called back . He gave us a price for the whole case rather than a retainer/hourly fee, as I feared the worst case scenario due to the strangeness of our unique situation. I remember his name from seeing a clip of the defense lawyers of the family of the gunman during the Federal Investigation of the San Bernardino shooting back in 2016, and I solemnly believed that I needed someone with his level of experience to combat against a corrupt County worker whose incentives included the success of her case either for a quota or to get some promotion in her cozy pension career. I was not about to let CPS attempt to overcorrect for their negligence similar to the Anthony Avalos case in Lancaster. Unfortunately this is the world that we live in now, and if you are poor or socio-economically underserved, then your family become experiments and training case studies for the newly hired M.S. Social Works graduates. Good luck getting your child out of the CPS foster care system. On the day of the Initial Hearing, Mo came in (figuratively) guns blazing and presented evidence that the CPS worker missed. The reaction from the County Counsel was a deer in the headlights; she was PISSED and looked unprofessional showing that expression in the courtroom. It was at this moment throughout this whole ordeal that I began to have faith that there is a light to the end of this tunnel. After the four month ordeal, Mo got my case dismissed. We avoided trial that would have extended CPS involvement for at least another 9 months. We avoided having to hire a medical professional to testify which cost a lot. If I had known what was about to happen the moment CPS knocked on my door, I would have called Mo the first thing. If I were poor, I would donate my blood and platelets to pay for his service. You want a winner on your team, because you are up against an investigator Social Worker who falls back to comfortably thinking "better luck next time" if they don't succeed, because that is how they get training and experience. Having gone through this, I wouldn't get the free appointed public defender from the County, because they have a completely different strategy. Their reputation isn't on the line, and so they don't have the same key performance indicators. Their strategies were night and day, and their difference in experience glaringly shows. My public defender commented that my potential case was one in a million, and I know it was because Mo did the actual work. Mo answered all my questions, whether relevant or dumb. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you Mo for helping me and putting up with my ignorance. If I had to repeat this entire nightmare again, I would hire Mo.
