We brought our husky mix here about 4 years ago for TPLO surgery. The quote from the emergency vet at Mt. Nebo was much higher so we decided to have it performed at Allegheny Vet Associates. From start to finish they have been the best. We had such a great experience, we have switched all of our dogs care to this vet after being unsatisfied with our other vet and receiving exceptional care after our husky's TPLO surgery. Our husky girl is back to her normal self and able to go for walks and runs again! All of the staff are friendly and caring. Our dogs even seem more calm and relaxed here than at the other vet office we used to go to. I recommend all of our friends and family to this vet, and they have also been satisfied. We're new to the area and our dogs never experienced ticks until moving here, so we needed treatments for that, we have a GS that will be four in July his name is Trigger and a senior citizen chiwahwah terrier mix name Dolce, my husband calls him Mr. Sir. He has about 6 teeth left, his breed often has dental issues, no matter how much we brushed his teeth as a puppy or adult. We're are so pleased how this office will put him on antibiotics and treat him on other ways the best they can before jumping right to putting him to sleep and pull more teeth. Allegheny Veterinary Associates currently has two veterinarians, Drs. Nicole Crowson and I think Chris Crowson. (All of my papers say only Nicole's name.) For about two years, I took my dog Olive here for her appointments for physical exams, vaccines, and medications for deworming, anxiety, and urinary incontinence. In December 2023, this vet did a urinalysis, which came back negative, and she prescribed an antibiotic for a different suspected infection. In early January 2024, my husband and I noticed that Olive wobbled on her four legs. When we pointed out Olive's unstable walking, the other vet said that one of her legs looked stiff, and he prescribed an NSAID. Unfortunately, three days later, an emergency veterinarian elsewhere diagnosed Olive with metastatic brain cancer, which was likely the cause of her unstable walking and other symptoms. read more

The worst and most unprofessional and uncaring vet I have ever encountered! Please be cautious about choosing this vet. I brought my happy 5 year old 100% healthy chocolate Lab in for tplo surgery, as a result of poorly performed anesthesia he developed an esophageal stricture which now means his esophagus is too narrow for food to reach his stomach so it gets regurgitated causing him to lose a lot of weight, just skin on bones. A normal dogs esophagus is 35mm, my lab has an 8mm opening. He has to stand to eat the liquefied food he now has to eat this way the rest of his life. Rewind to right after his surgery.. I called the vet (Nicole Crowson) and brought him in numerous times and was told to not feed him for 24 hours meanwhile he hasn't eaten anything to begin with since his surgery which was a few days, she then changed medications a couple times without even seeing him even tho I kept calling with no solution. Nicole was the most unprofessional vet I have ever met, when she finally told me to bring him in she gave him a can of dog food to see what happened when he would eat - and he was so skinny and hungry he ate so fast within seconds he started to suffocate and finally regurgitated the food.. then Nicole had him eat what he threw up so she could see it happen again all awhile he's choking she is saying things that were very discouraging and not putting an ease to my mind at all while using the F word!! I've never been to a vet that felt the need to use the F word. They charged me for an xray they took of his stomach - didn't find anything and just dismissed us. Never once did these people offer anything back considering my dogs life has changed FOREVER and the thousands of dollars I spent to save my best friends life due to their poor performance, they do not care about your pet, they just want the money. So after her diagnosis were continuously wrong, I took him to an internal medicine specialist for an endoscopy for dilation and that procedure was performed 3 times and he still has trouble eating even liquefied food. So between the tplo surgery and all the balloonings he had to endure because of their careless anesthesia mistake; my cost is over 8k and not only is his leg not any better - Now he can never eat regular food for the rest of his life. Had Dr. Nikki actually looked inside my cats mouth she would have found what I saw today at another vet. An abscess, bleeding, raw cheek, deep wounds. New vet even asked if someone looked inside this cats mouth! Twice I was overcharged for medication with no discussion or option. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. Too young, inexperienced, awful ego & attitude. Immediately went to the most expensive option bringing up cancer when SHE DIDNT EVEN BOTHER TO LOOK INSIDE THE CATS MOUTH!!! We normally take our dogs to a different vet, but my parents had a great experience with Allegheny Veterinary Associates several years ago and when our golden needed a couple of cysts removed, we decided to take him to Dr. Nikki and team. Had a great first visit- prompt, thorough and to the point. We scheduled the surgery and at time of drop off, confirmed the locations of the cysts to be removed (right side of his back, and at the base of his skull). (He had a couple of smaller ones we hadn't discussed or worried about). Got the call around 2pm that surgery went well and he could be picked up later that afternoon. To my surprise, when we picked him up, he had two incisions: on the right side of his back and across his shoulder blades (more than 6 inches below where the cyst on the back of his skull is located). The explanations from the vet and vet tech (when we called to ask what happened) were that they "couldn't find the one on his head but they removed the one between his shoulder blades instead"..... no call to verify the location before surgery when they couldn't find it. No mention of it in the post-op check in call with us. Not a word about it during pickup. When I called the vet once we got home, Dr. Nikki suggested bringing him back the following Monday and she "wouldn't charge me" to remove the one on his head, "just for the local anesthetic"..... after we just spent nearly $1000 on having one of the wrong cysts removed. Not only will we not give this practice another dime, but my dog will never be under her poor care again. The complete lack of communication, and refusal to take accountability for this is infuriating. It is irresponsible veterinary practice and I would expect this highly rated vet to hold themselves to a higher standard of care, or demonstrate an ounce of compassion or professionalism. For a human, this would be malpractice. A mechanic doesn't even change the oil in my car without calling me first. This was a disappointing experience to say the least, and we won't be back or recommend others to this location. Thankfully the cyst removal is a minor surgery, but I wanted to share our story with others who are considering placing their pets under the care of Allegheny Veterinary Associates. read more

Not only is the staff wonderful and attentive but the surgeon, Dr. Crowson is genuine and caring. It is upsetting to see other reviews that speak bad about this place because I HIGHLY recommend it and will definitely be coming back here for my dogs next surgery (since she needs her other leg done as well). I was going to Greenfield Vet Clinic and had called around to so many places like Point Breeze, Spay and Neuter, etc and no one would get me in to get my pups vaccinations in time. Best vetrinarian I have ever been to! I have 2 yellow labs with 2 very different personalities. We parked our car and without fail the dogs both took a poo in the parking lot. They have bags outside to clean up after the dogs. We walked into a beautiful clean waiting room. We were greated with a smile and they were even aware of who we were when we walked in. This was just based on appointment alone. We filled out some paperwork, nothing overwhelming. We were taken back to a nice little room for the examination. The aid came in and weighed both dogs. The vet then came in and examined their teeth and gave the shots. We have one dog that will be nice to anyone and is so loveable. The vet could tell right away that Maggie was a very relaxed. On the flip side she could also tell that Peja was not as relaxed. She was great with Peja and Peja even went into the next room with her. This is not something that Peja would ever do with anyone. Peja only lkes you if you have a tennis ball or a frisbee. Peja even let her look at her teeth, which was very scary for me. I thought Peja was going to bite her but she didn't. Maggie has a hangtag that needs removed from her stomach. I have talked to other vets that wanted to knock her out, keep her overnight, do bloodwork, and a CT scan. Ridiculous to say the least. This vet says the bloodwork is necessary because of her age and that she can give her a local anesthetic and it will be over. the do need to keep her for the day but that is it. The vet is also not charging an arm and a leg for the surgery. The only thing I would say is that they don't have alot of modern equipment in the office. I know that they make dog lifts to get dogs on the examination table etc, they do not have this type of equipment. This is the reason I gave them 4 stars. We will use this vet for everything! read more

Nicole Crowson is absolutely the most CALLOUS and UNPROFESSIONAL vet I think I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with!! She apparently misdiagnosed an early indicator of terminal cancer in my dog, performed an unnecessary and unrelated surgery, and did nothing but cause my pet's last two months to be torturous. When I phoned to discuss this issue with her after a second vet had to euthanize my beloved friend, she began to speak unprofessionally using numerous profanities telling me to "get over it as it WAS JUST A DOG!" Insulting experience. The tech was decent and asked the preliminary questions and took my let to the back for a work up. The female vet , crowson, just stuck her head into the room to give me the quick report . She never came into the room like every other professional vet in my life has done to explain or to be personable . Who treats customers like that.? It was shocking to say the least. My bill was quite high , in other words the cost of a facility with specialists and specialty equipment....they padded the bill with unnecessary treatments. Nothing but greed. This office is very warm and friendly. Dr. Crowson kept my dog alive a long time with medication and she lead a quality life. When the end had to be, she and the office showed extreme compassion and my dog died with dignity. I just got a new puppy and I take my puppy and my one other dog to Dr. Nicki. When we started going here, we were happy with how friendly and helpful the vet techs and receptionists are. The hours the office is open are convenient, and prices are reasonable. At our first visit, Dr.Nicole Crowson seemed nice and we returned to their office several times for our puppy. Then, the bad experiences started. At once visit, Dr. Crowson started to clip our puppy's nails without even asking us if we wanted her to clip them. She wasn't paying any attention and was clipping so quickly that she cut almost every nail down to the quick before we made her stop. Our poor puppy was bleeding all over the table from at least 5 or more nails. I understand that it's easy to cut down a bit too far.....but if you are a vet and you notice that you are cutting too far down on every single nail, why wouldn't you stop?? She actually said, "Oh, she has very long quicks!" and kept right on cutting away. She was just so impatient that she didn't want to spend more than 30 seconds doing it. We have never had such a horrible experience at any groomer, and Dr. Crowson will never be touching her nails again. The next time we went (another puppy shot was due) Dr. Crowson said to us, "when you bring her in for me to spay, I'm cutting all of those nails down so far I won't have to do it again any time soon!" Let me also state that our dog was terrified of going up on that table because she was so traumatized during the previous visit. This little comment was the final straw. Um....excuse me? First of all, we never told her that she was spaying our dog and she never asked about the time frame under which we wanted her spayed at all. She never discussed any such options with us. Second of all, could she have said something more rude and ridiculous? Yes, please, chop all of our dog's nails off too short so they bleed while she is already having surgery. I feel this doctor is extremely careless and more concerned with being funny and putting on an act than she is with listening to her clients and being professional enough to talk to them about issues. We went to anther doctor at a different office to have our puppy spayed because I don't trust her surgery abilities. We will also be seeing another doctor for all future needs, as we will not tolerate our dog being treated the way she was treated. read more

Searched around forever looking for an affordable ACL surgery for my 9yo chocolate lab. She had previously torn her other ACL and had surgery two years ago but it was far too expensive. My poor dog was hobbling around in pain. Even though she is on the older side I couldn't let her continue like this for much longer. I contacted many vets asking their pricing for the TPLO versus the TTA versus the lateral suture procedure for ACL/CCL reconstruction. Allegheny veterinary Associates were super friendly and welcoming. They agreed to see my dog at the last minute and said her into their operating schedule. The vet staff as well as the surgeon himself were all very friendly. I am so happy to have stumbled upon this place and will definitely be recommending it to anybody I come across in the future. I would also love to take my dog here for routine follow-up care as well. The procedure was extremely affordable is that especially compared with all the other places I called. We took him in because he appeared to be having pain in his hips. They never went over shots, looked him over, or did an initial exam. My Great Dane had bloat. She's been part of my family for 7 years. I didn't know what to do. I got in contact with Dr. Chris & Nicole Crowson & they BOTH came to their clinic after hours. I was sure that I'd be euthanizing Bella, but Chris & Nicki took an x-ray and then wanted to see if they could save her. Well in the end they saved Bella's life. Their prices are great and they don't take advantage of you when you're in such a heart wrenching situation like MOST of the other Vets that I called. I cannot express my truly heartfelt appreciation for what they did. They truly care about the animals that they treat. I'm certain that had I taken Bella somewhere else she would have been euthanized and I would have had my heart broken. At the recommendation of our vet, we took our 3 year old mixed breed to AVA for TPLO surgery for torn ACL & Meniscus. We are pleased with the surgery and outcome. We were able to get an appointment and schedule the surgery with no wait and the price seemed to be reasonable compared to quotes from other Vet Hospitals in the area, some of which wouldn't even give us a quote over the phone and one month wait to get in. If I could leave 0 stars I would. Do not trust anything these doctors tell you about your pet's health. They knowingly scammed me out of thousands of dollars for unnecessary surgery for my dog that ultimately lead to her death when there tell tale signs that something was wrong and the doctor went ahead and performed surgery anyway. This is one of the most unprofessional places I've ever had to deal with. We have been going here for 7 years , found them by accident many years ago after a different vet/ emergency vet told me to abort the puppies my pug was pregnant with JUST BECAUSE. I called this office and Drs. Nicky and Chris took care of my girl and delivered 5 healthy little babies and mom did great . All 4 out of the 5 babies still use AVA as their Vet ( the one that doesn't is on the other side of the state) All 5 babies have great homes. We have had 2 emergencies with our babies and both times AVA has taken great care of them and done everything to make them healthy again even when it came to researching a rare disorder and making me feel comfortable with the options. I could not even imagine anyone else being as kind as the staff here , they love our dogs as much as we do. When your Dr. gets on the floor on the dogs level to make them feel comfortable... you know you have found a great Dr. The techs are fantastic and spend time making sure we understand everything before we leave. As far as cost goes, they are less expensive than some of the other vets in the area and always try to work with the moms and dads. Never pushy with upsales . Just all around a great office.
