Allegro is fancy Olive Garden, with about the same quality of food - everything is very average. Servings are large but there's not much flavor. We had a huge group, around 10 people, and we each got different things and I tried all of them and I can't say I was super impressed. If you like Olive Garden then Allegro will be just fine for you! Prices are pretty steep for what it is as well. Decor is outdated and looks tired and old. That is one thing Olive Garden has going for it: it was updated within the last few decades! Older place with decor etc - cozy bar when you walk in and some general dining room area and what looked like more secluded dining rooms for groups etc. We were sat at a booth in the dining room area. Nice area overall and the decor was older but just fine. My first issue would just be the comfort of the booth seats. Throughout the dinner I had to adjust myself bc my it was really uncomfortable - seats just need reframed bc the springs on the seats are shot. Upon recommendation, we ordered the veal balls - which come to the table complimentary anyway. The veal balls were really good - and the complimentary bread on the table was good as well. On top of that we ordered bruschetta as an appetizer. The bruschetta was good - just Italian bread slices with melted cheese and a roasted pepper on top. I wouldn't consider this bruschetta though the name was different in the menu. For an entree, I went with the usual chicken parmigiana which came with spaghetti and a salad. The house salad comes with a clear type Italian dressing which was really good. The spaghetti was al dente which I appreciated and the chicken was really good. For dessert I had the Italian creme cake - which was the standard type and was really good - though the coffee obviously wasn't a fresh pot. Good place, would recommend it here as an Italian option in the Altoona area. read more

I'm going to give this restaurant a three. I had orange roughy. I enjoyed it very much. I haven't been able to find it on any menu it a while. Definitely one of the most expensive restaurants in Altoona, but both times I've eaten here (luckily when I didn't have to pay) I have been beyond satisfied with the meal and the service is exceptional. The feeling and decor of the restaurant definitely dates back about 30 years ago- but maintains the small-town feel that Altoona used to have before the malls and sheetz took over. The drive there says it all- off the main street, around curvy roads and in a small corner that driving by you may miss. But definitely make the effort to stop there for any special occasion. me and my wife celebrated our anniversary here and it was everything and more that I had hoped for. The service was fantastic and in just the right amount (servers were attentive but not overbearing). The food from the appetizers all the way to dessert were delicious and the filet mignon was arguably one of the best steaks I've ever had. Outdated menu and decor... probably haven't changed since 1960. We were just driving through this middle of nowhere town, so no expectations, yet it was disappointing. Five different main dishes all covered with same bland tomato sauce and mozzarella. Olive Garden looks better now. read more

The food here is fair and the decor is pretty dated. I had what I think they called veal scallopine which was veal and mushrooms. It was served on a dished plate and was mostly submerged in a heavy oil/beef stock broth which was extremely greasy. Im a steak lover and this was the first time I had veal, not impressed at all. It tasted exactly like chicken you get from a Chinese restaurant, and looked the same too. My wife got the filet, which was about $49 and she said it was just ok and only ate half. Our salads were good and the complimentary veal balls (meatballs in a marinara sauce served with garlic bread) were fantastic. For the $100+ price tag there are a plethora of other steak houses with much better food and atmosphere available in Altoona. read more

The wasn't a long wait for a table or service and I was first pleased and taken by the quick service. But, moreover, was mistaken. The fast seating and quick service was because of the lack of taste in the food. The Veal Marsalis was the best ever and the ambiance (white table clothes) was really classy and made for a very memorable evening -- especially for my wife's birthday. The dining room is beautifully decorated. Food is consistently 4 or 5 stars. It is charming. Homemade Italian fare. We love coming for half price night on Wednesday. Last week we had a waitress named Susan who was one of the best waitresses we every had. Very attentive. I recommend all of the pasta dishes. Old world European sauces are excellent. read more

I dined at Allegros last night. There are tables and booth seating. When I walked in everyone said hello. They have an extensive wine list. I just wanted water. My waitress, Barbara was very nice. After I placed my order, Barbara brought out a complimentary dish from the Chef of lamb balls in sauce. Omg! I was pleased with the lamb balls. The sauce was superb. I could eat it by the spoonful. I have always wanted to try escargot which I ordered. It was delicious. I ordered Veal Piccata. It was served in thin slices with marsala sauce. Both were delicious. I was full. I ordered two Cannolis to go. That evening I tried one. It had chocolate filling with a cherry. The filling had some kind of nut. It was very good. I want to return and try other menu items. Didn't actually taste the food. My boyfriend and I visited Altoona this weekend. We were seated but ignored. Another couple was seated about 20-25 minutes after us and were served immediately while we only had bread and water, which took about ten minutes to arrive. (They have a water/bread person) We felt like we were treated differently so we put our coats on and left. As we were leaving, the hostess did politely ask us to stay and blamed the situation on a seating problem. We were looking forward to trying the food because we heard it had decent food. read more

Pretty decent Italian-American fare, this is very much the nostalgic home cooking you can get at your nonna's house. As such, I think it's overpriced...but if you're not Italian, you will probably disagree! The veal meatballs were the best thing on the menu by far! So juicy with a homemade red sauce that tasted strongly of bell pepper--very traditional! The creamy cheese ravioli were delicious as well, and I really liked their homemade Italian salad dressing. The mussels were so-so and I wasn't a fan of their homemade spaghetti, which wasn't chewy enough and had a texture similar to ramen (I know, weird). The portion sizes are massive, so share or come in a state of literal starvation. The service here is very warm and genuine. You can tell some of these people have been working here a long time, and the manager was walking around and talking to tables. Do yourself a favor--skip the Olive Garden and come here instead! read more

My boyfriend and I went for Valentine's Day dinner Saturday evening. The server (Sue) was awesome. The valentine's day menu was amazing. I had the veal Saltimbocca and he had a combo of that and crab stuffed shrimp, which I had a bite of and was delicious as well. The complimentary veal meatballs and garlic toast were awesome as was the cherry covered cheesecake that we shared. I love the intimate atmosphere - even when the restaurant got busy everything was muted (or perhaps it was just the company I was in lol) We had a beautiful dinner and will definitely return. read more

We have eaten here quite often when visiting family in the area. I have eaten in this place when it was called Fama's in the 60s. I have never had an unpleasant meal or service until this evening. This is what I expected to receive again. With reservations, the 4 of us were seated, wine, drinks and food ordered and then it went south. Others were seated after us and served before us. We were sitting there being ignored. When our salads were brought, almost immediately the main courses arrived and was set at the table. The server removed my wife's salad before she was done with and did the same with our guests. The food was still good, but for the experience left a bad after-taste. read more

This is probably one of the best restaurants in Altoona. I was here today with my Grandmother and everything about the experience was wonderful. There weren't too many people but it wasn't empty either. The prices are in the higher range but it's worth it. The chef even gives you a complimentary veal appetizer. You don't see such generosity like that anymore sadly. But, I digress, I had the Fettuccini Alfredo with grilled chicken and my grandmother had the Crabcakes. The sauce was delightful, The chicken was juicy and succulent you can tell it's authentic Italian and I had more than enough to take home. My grandmother enjoyed her crab cakes as well. The crab was fresh and in generous amounts compared to most which are with heavy breading. The waiters are courteous and the ambience is one of class and elegance. The decor is fancy and charming like a 5 star restaurant should be. Overall it was just a great experience with classy people and amazing food. You truly do get what you pay for there. At best very average food but grotesquely overpriced in a venue that 25 years ago had passed its prime. In fact by 2017 standards it's severely outdated especially in light of its very high prices. While I just plain did not like my shrimp scampi, it was also priced higher than any place I've been in Johnstown-State College-Altoona area. The waitress was an older lady, competent, skilled, pleasant, and that was highlight of evening. My wife's fish was bland, nothing realty wrong but nothing good -- again as against the price. I was most amused to see various patrons complaining about prices at Finelli's -- they should compare with Allegro. It had been probably 10-15 years since we were thee + as far as I care it will be another 25 till I go again. Frankly I'd say nothing about prices IF [and I do mean IF] food was commensurate in value. Tain't so Joe! read more
