Great French fries and Reubens! I called ahead for pick up and it was ready and great!!

A group of us were suffering from burning quads and never-ending thirst. After our lengthy bike ride, we all decided to down a bunch of beers, beer cheese, beer battered everything and Arizona sweet tea to replenish our energy. The pub is Spruce Creek Tavern. You thought for a second I'd forget to mention the name, did you? The Southwest Chicken Wrap kicked me in the face with flavor, and the spicy cheese balls came to play too. Next time, I plan to order the Mississippi Mud Pie, because I love chugging mud puddles and making stews out of them already. Everything we ordered was delicious. The corn nuggets were so hot and creamy and the syrup just topped them off I got the golden wings and they were amazing. The sauce was basically a very mild teryaki wing sauce and they were cooked to a perfect extra crispy with fries tossed in old bay. The fries were hand cut and so good. My boyfriend got the bacon ranch which were good but based on reviews I thought would be a dry rub but instead were a very liquid ranch rub (see pictures). We live nearby so we frequent this place several times a year. It's bar food, and with that in mind, it's pretty good. I like the "cabin" atmoshphere and it's a great place to just grab a draft or watch some sports. I've tried a lot of their menu. This place is primarily known for their wings and thats definitely my favorite. The various sauce combinations are great and it's a fairly good deal on the dozen wings/fries combo in the current market. Wing sizes are medium to large and they're fresh / not frozen which is key! They are also known for their fresh cut fries. I love fresh cut fries but these aren't my favorite. They're big, almost steak fries, not crispy and after they cool off they aren't tasty. Beyond that it's your typical bar food menu. Salads are good. I like the cheesesteak over the burger. As a local I go here often, it's the best wing spot around but everything else is just Ok. read more

Out in the middle of nowhere, the Spruce Creek Tavern has a little bit of something for everyone. It's a pretty rustic spot with an expansive menu and very reasonably priced food. It's always crowded, especially on football weekends. Don't expect an exotic beer or cocktail menu. Just decent and reasonably priced food, and friendly service. One word of warning... The hot garlic wings have A LOT of garlic lol. I love garlic and even I thought the garlic was a bit over the top. read more

Went on a date here with a guy who had a super angular chin. It turned me on when he got honey bbq wing sauce in his stubble. Those wings had me begging for more. There's a reason why the fries are world famous. Hungry folk from every corner of the globe yearn for the sound of that crunch. Worth traveling from China. We will probably never come back to this restaurant, not because it wasn't fantastic, but because we would prefer to freeze that moment in time and never let it be tarnished. Stopped by for a quick lunch. The place is very clean with a cool vibe with lots of tongue and groove pine. Sat at the bar and had a cold draft beer. Ordered a cheesesteak wrap with the sweet peppers. Came out quickly and was very tasty. Bartender was very friendly. There were about 3-4 older couples that cane in and dined at the tables. Prices are very fair. I will go back to try their wings. I asked and was told Wednesday is wing day. But only $1 off. read more

Thirty years have come and gone since my last time at SCT. Spruce creek is world renowned for: World Class Flyfishing and Table fries. I travelled to SC for the latter. They did not disappoint. Arrived during the lunch hour which was not too busy. Our server was friendly and a true fry guru. Both the Tavern and menu have remained the same and stood the test of time. We ordered the "table fries" with bacon, cheese, side of bay seasoning. (See Pic). Also, ordered BLT, and a reuben. Everything was world class including the service. Worth the drive. read more

Finally, a restaurant that is not only serious about wings, but also quite creative with their sauces! When I mentioned to a local that I was a big fan of buffalo wings and had tired all kinda across the nation during my travels, they recommended two places. I stopped by Spruce Creek Tavern expecting it to be just another venue with boring attempts at original sauces. I was very pleasantly surprised to find quite the opposite! The tavern is obviously a local favorite and a place I would guess people in the area eat quite regularly as I witnessed many patrons sitting in tables nearby spark up personal conversations with each other. At the same time, however, it appeared obvious that I was not a local as it felt like many were watching me as soon as I walked in. Wednesday has a wings and fries special for just under $10. I was thinking of ordering more wings, but instead I ordered sides of three different sauces (see photo). Yelper Alesia is right, Blazin Bacon Ranch sauce IS the bomb! Not only could you tell the sauce was made in house, but it was a brilliant mix of flavors that I will definitely get again. Their fresh cut fries are solid as other Yelpers mentioned, but I didn't know you could add seasonings to them (I added cajun). I'm not sure how the wings would be with the jalapeño-cheddar sauce, but it was the perfect accompaniment for my fries and added a kick of heat. I was not able to find anything about the menu online or from previous reviews, so I made sure to take pictures of each page and post them for others. The only drawback I found to Spruce Creek was the overwhelming scent of frying oil. With all the wings and fries, I'm sure it's a challenge to ventilate. I also found my clothes absorbed a bit of that smell in the short time I was eating. *Normally I don't write reviews after one visit, but the wings and sauces were so good I had to share! No mask needed thankfully, very sweet waitress, but the food was not great. The burger was greasy but not in a good way and almost completely tasteless. It was fresh, but probably the cheapest meat available and no flavor. The bun fell apart, the french fries were just little nubbins. The gravy seemed like from a jar. I got the bacon and ranch dressing on the side and it was delicious. Too bad the fries were so small it was difficult to really even dip them. I'd not eat here again. Dear Queenie B, this is in reply to your review of Spruce Creek Tavern: Wow, I just read your review of Spruce Creek Tavern and a few of your other reviews since moving into Central PA, and honesty they seem a little hurtful and mean-spirited. I too moved to Central PA relatively recently, though the metropolitan area I left was Chicago. We noticed pretty quickly that the area doesn't have the same culinary options (State College is not really a big food town) as Chicago did, and having grown up in North Jersey, I know they don't have the same delis and the things I grew to love growing up. But rather than grouse about it, we decided to find the things that are unique to the area and enjoy them. We also enjoy cooking our own food, so we've found a number of fresh ingredient options that we've purchased direct from farmers and growers. I guess what stuck out in your review of the Spruce Creek Tavern was your mean-spirited attack on the actual people who work at there, specifically equating "farm/mountain/country people" as being less developed or worthwhile than people who've grown up in an urban area. The derisive attitude you're holding onto is sadly everywhere in America today--putting people in a box with labels and failing to look for common ground. I get it you may have had a few bad experience there. It's okay to find another place and move on quietly. I wouldn't rate their food quality as amazing, but I've found a few things on the menu that I do like and can enjoy with a cold beverage. Most importantly, that's not the reason I go to Spruce Creek--I go to enjoy the people I'm with and celebrate the life we enjoy here in Central PA. This isn't meant to be a zinger or a "gotcha" reply--I'm only offering an observation based on this and some of your other reviews: wow, you seem really angry at living here and just generally unhappy. Is life here really all that bad? Happy Valley isn't NYC or any of the lesser cities. (Thank God!). It doesn't offer the same things, it offers different things. If you're going to stay in Happy Valley, (or explore Big Valley, Penns Valley, Sinking Valley or anywhere else around Central PA, you might find there are some pretty unique and great people living here. And some of them might live on farms, or be from the country, or be from small towns, or have made a conscious decision to have moved away from a metropolitan area. I could have written this in a way that would have attacked you and provoked you to shoot back with something snarky and mean-spirited. But is that really what we need more of in this world? And yes, you can say "wow what a loser this guy is. Doesn't he have better things to do with his time than read and respond to reviews on Yelp?" Well, yes and no--I do have a lot of other things to do, but what's more important than standing by the things you love, like Central PA, and the great people that make it a nice place to live? So I genuinely hope you come to terms with living here. If you want to try Spruce Creek again, dinner and conversation is on me! read more

This place was WEIRD. I'm not talking aesthetically or personally here, the food here was one of the strangest things I've had in some time. The saving grace and best part of this place is the design, from inside and out it's got the most home style and comfortable feel out of any restaurant you will go to. Now on to the food, I got wings, their award winning fries and a basic burger. For our appetizer, we got the pretzels. The food came out fast, like we got our appetizer then 3 minutes later our main course came. Rushed? Probably. Oh yeah, and the pretzels were pretzels. Not bad at all. My wings tasted amazing at first, honestly some of the best I had, but once I started eating more and more... the flaws started to show. They were salty, too saltly. The sauce wasn't hot and the flavor wasn't present. For their fries, you take a bite and it's so crunchy and soft on the inside... but once you get past that the taste isn't there, there's practically no salt or seasoning. I suspect what they did was hand cut some fries, throw them in a fryer, take them out half way, then freeze them for 12 hours and THEN fry them to be served. It's a decent strategy, but you have to remember to season them properly. And for my burger, it tasted like something I made at home. Frozen beef with no flavor, try ingredients and on top of that, pissing grease everywhere. DONT try this man, there's better places to go. read more

A hike from civilization, camouflage appears to be the unspoken dress code. If you're not "from around here" you'll be reminded as soon as you walk through the door, but everyone is friendly as long as you don't try to take their guns. read more

Went here last night for the first time after hearing about the restaurant from my family. Arrived at 5pm as a party of 6. The hostess said it would be 30 minutes. 1 hour and 40 minutes later after we saw several parties of 6 or more that arrived after us seated, we asked what was happening. We received 2 different stories from 2 different mangers. 1) If a table seats more than 6 they are going to put bigger parties at that table even if they arrived after your party & 2) Customers who called ahead get preferred seating. With that information we left, without even an apology from the manager. My suggestion, call ahead or be prepared to wait...a very long time. read more

A great place to go if you love French fries. They serve them by the handful, plateful, and even lunch tray full. I got the wings and fries combo with the hot ranch. The wings were honestly the best I've had in a while. The beer selection was decent but they could've had another draft or two. The reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 was due to the wait staff. Although it was a packed Saturday night crowd, the wait staff underperformed and was a little snarky. The bartender was nice however. I definitely recommend going however. read more

The service was not very good: never took a drink order when we sat down, didn't refill empty drinks when the food was delivered, never came back after the food came. We went for their wing special on a Wednesday evening. The wing basket with fries was excellent. The wings were crispy, sauce choices would suit most and they are very good.
