After couple hours of walking around Altoona,I wasn't very excited to try this place,it's looked shabby,it was construction work everywhere around,dusty and dirty. But we decided to not spend more time for finding something else and stepped in. It was very charming,surprisingly well kept,of course old,but in a good way. Menu was intriguing,modern and seasonal,which I value the most. Waiter was engaging in our menu exploration and was knowledgeable. Now to the food.. cauliflower appetizer made as General Tso was one other best cauliflower in my entire life. Lightly fried,not mushy,but with exact chicken like texture in divine sauce,kicking spicy with sweet undertones. In the same way not overpowering to forget about cauliflower itself. A+ for that dish!!! Pirogi was a little doughy on my opinion,but taste was good. Asian bowl with salmon had great flavor profile: cabbage salad was beautiful and freshly crisp,carrots were marinated perfectly with slight vinegary flavors,bok choy was unbelievably delicious. I asked for medium salmon,mine was almost well done,but taste was good and rice in the middle wasn't sticky and flavorful,but had watery texture and was bland. It saddens me immensely to do this, but our second *attempt* to eat here was a failure. We sat in the same booth, were greeted with menus and water, and then proceeded to wait 15 minutes for what appeared to be only one server. The server who went to two tables (who came in after us) and never even said "Hey I'll be right over". The Knickerbocker Tavern is as old as the building that it is in being established in 1904. The Knickerbocker Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. The current owners have had the tavern for a few years. When you enter you are in the original neighborhood tavern. There are multiple rooms and an inner courtyard. There is a decent menu with pub grab that is elevated a notch above that of a regular bar. They source as much as possible from local farmers and vendors. Their takeout containers are compostable. I had a bacon cheese burger on a brioche roll with fries. The burger was cooked the way I ordered and the fries were crispy. The soup of the day was a very good pumpkin soup served with ginger snaps. First time in Altoona,PA. Wasn't expecting the restaurant to look like it's in a house or attached to houses but when you get inside it's way bigger than expected. The Asian bowl was good! The shrimp and chick were cooked perfectly both juicy! The only thing I would correct is the vegetables has a little too much soy sauce but if you put it all together in one bite it was lovely! I would definitely go back! They also have really good prices for their alcohol. There was a 2.75 yeungling beer deal so I mean I can for sure say that's a steal! I love the Knick. I stop here when traveling through Altoona for work. This place IS the BEER OASIS of Central (I-99) Pennsylvania. Beer selection is ALWAYS top notch. I usually eat at the bar but there is restaurant/ dining area and bier garten/ patio seating. Service is always great bartenders are very knowledgeable and friendly. Yes I'm a beer snob, but also check out their spirits (especially bourbon and whiskey). Don't be afraid to walk around, ask the servers about the odd beer items they may have stored downstairs. I usually get the chili. The crostini was AWESOME!!!! So much good stuff. Parking is on street or in the lot at the intersection. Did I say I love this place? read more

The dinning area in the back is in need of a little TLC and ambiance (torn booth seats and cheap looking tables), but the bar area seemed warm and inviting and if it was warmer outside, we definitely would have eaten out in the courtyard. For a place that sits in the middle of a neighborhood I was skeptical at first. Then I walked in and it was busy and a good vibe. The food was really good and the cocktail/beer selection is excellent. We had the beef tartare for and app and was delicious. I ordered chicken wings and could believe how big and many were on the plate. Way more than I could eat. It's was tough stopping eating them because they were very good. My boss got some steak dish and said it was delicious as well. Our bartender was very good and helpful with menu selections and suggestions. Very good attitude and treated his guests very well. This place is off the beaten path and the front it looks like a neighborhood small bar but there is a large restaurant in the back and the food is awesome. we had the deep fried Brussels sprouts and the cheesesteak egg rolls both amazing. It was somewhat of a rainy day and there is a side portion of the place that you can still hide from the elements. Menu has nice options for diverse tastes. This is our second visit here. We thought maybe the first one was a fluke because everything was so good. It wasn't. Our visit today was just as good. Everything about this place is fantastic- service, atmosphere and food! The smash burgers are one of the best I've had in PA - and I've had a lot. Salads are also great. Been to the Knickerbocker many times over the years, both during the day and at night. Days are calm and it's a nice place to stop in for lunch and a drink. There always seems to be plenty of room even when it's a little busy. Nights can be hectic and loud. It can be a little difficult to just sit and talk. The patio area is fun in warmer months if it isn't too hot outside. The food is always decent and has been known to be pretty good at times. I recently had their Cuban sandwich which should be a hit with most people. It's a neighborhood bar but it can draw quite a crowd on weekends. The only drawback, other than it can get noisy, is that it can be hard to find parking. There is a small lot across the street but it gets filled up fast, and then you spend your time circling the neighborhood for a spot to park on the street. All in all, the Knickerbocker can be a fun place to visit, but it may not be for everyone. read more

This place was awesome! First time here, but we found parking across the street in the lot easily. It was busy on a Saturday around dinner time, but we were able to find a table in the back dining room still. Very friendly staff from the minute we walked in. We got pulled pork mac and cheese for an app to share. There was so much pork on top, it was a great dish. Perfect for 2-3 people if you are sharing, I would suggest. Beer selection was great, lots of varieties--local and across the country. Our food was so good. I definitely suggest getting onion rings as your side for the burger as they were some of the best I've ever had. Smash burger was solid, loved the secret sauce and that they give you extra on the side. For the fish and chips, we loved that it wasn't a super heavy fried batter on the fish. Another first time visit for me. I've heard good things about this place from my husband so when we were in Altoona for a play at the Mischler Theater, we stopped here beforehand for dinner. What a charming old hotel with old timey decor but with modern tasting food and drinks. The craft beers on tap are so numerous, it makes it hard to decide which to have. No worries! You can request a flight of 5 beers/hard ciders customized to your liking. Between the two of us, we were able to sample 10 different ones. Each glass held 5 ounces and the cost was $15 for the flight of 5. Now the food, I ordered fish and chips and was very happy with everything on my plate. Even the Cole slaw was delicious! And those spicy dill pickle slices were a pleasant surprise! But the star was the crunchy fried large piece of haddock. Delicious! My friend had the black and blue burger with an extra slice of American cheese. She said it was perfectly cooked to her liking of medium well. Our server was super nice and attentive. She explained the flight selection process and helped us make some decisions about what we might like. If you're in Altoona, you have to give this place a try. My only advice is to give yourself some extra time if you're on a schedule because parking can be a challenge to find nearby. Stumbled upon this place after calling a couple others that were booked full tonight and I'm so glad they were because this place is even better! We had a large group with young kids and our server was really good. I wanted to try everything on the menu and I hope to go back to do just that. The cauliflower appetizer was a crowd pleaser. My fried bologna sandwich was unique and delicious. The bangers and mash were equally yummy. Everything seemed extremely reasonably priced too! The crime of passion cocktail was amazing and presented beautifully. The other wonderful thing about this place is that they source A LOT of ingredients from local (PA) places. Heck yea! Love to see that. My one and only suggestion is that they use a different cleaning agent other than pine sol. The dining room we were in definitely smelled strong, which was slightly off-putting for me while eating dinner. With that being said, I will 100% go back when I'm in the area! read more

Came here on a trip to Altoona to see one a the Pitt Docs and found this almost hidden but right in front of me spot! My friend and I gave it a go and wow, super friendly quick service, was mid afternoon on. Friday and only couple others at the bar! We decided to share some wings and cheesesteak eggrolls(?) and my friend had a ginormous baked potato with her choice of toppings which were delish, only reason I gave 4 stars was potato was not all the way cooked through but large enough to take home And finish cooking later... tried a NA Gin cocktail, which was superb for My dry January and it was a very reasonable cost for all we ordered! RJ tried to find us a place for brunch and stumbled upon this gem. This charming building is much larger than it looks, and what a great find. It also has a cute outside seating area. We sat at the bar and as soon as we saw pierogies knew we had to have them. We also ordered Shout Out to All the Pears and asked the bartender if we could have vodka instead of whiskey and he said of course we could. Wow, those drinks were awesome, vodka with pear puree, lemon and ginger ale. He ordered a steak wrap and I ordered a Nashville chicken sandwich. Yum, this place is on point! Stopped here on a Saturday evening - and even having business interests in the area - I never knew it existed. According to my sources, they have good food but had went thru a rebranding of sorts in recent years. A variety of spaces make up this spot - upon walking a dark bar setting with a couple booths, then back rooms with different seating and more lighting. We had reservations and were sat in the back room, which has high ceilings and was a nice collection of chairs, booths, and high tops. Due to Covid only some were allowed to be filled. Ordered a mix drink which took awhile to come back to us - potentially it was coming by St. Bernard. I think it had sat on the bar - bc the ice had melted and it was watered down. To start we ordered the brisket Mac and cheese and crab dip - both of which were small plates so for sharing I thought it would be perfect. Portions were immense. Large portion of both - I would recommend if you have a large party ordering several are good but for just two - expect to take leftovers. The brisket Mac and cheese was good - would have liked to have the noodles creamier more sauce, but the brisket was really good and had a good tang to it. The crab dip was also really good - the pita chips were incredibly fluffy and were a perfect fit for the creamy crab dip. Highly recommended!!! For my entree I panicked and shot from the hip with the fish and chips. The fish tail was huge - fried perfectly and the tarter sauce was the proper addition. The fries underneath were of the boardwalk variety - fresh cut and it comes with vinegar. Also the cole slaw was an underrated addition - again with a spice to it that I really enjoyed! It also came with what I would liken to a Sheetz fire roasted tomato sauce for dipping - also really good. I ate way too much but next time - I'm getting dessert. Highly recommended. read more
