A cool historical building from the mid 1800's. The bar is really interesting and it's tucked away off the main street. The physical wooden bar was installed in 1905. We stooped into the US Hotel Tavern on Valentines Day for an early lunch. Service was top notch! The tomato bisque was AMAZING! I could've taken a gallon home! The husband had a burger that he said was delicious and I got a Burgh Salad with grilled shrimp. The shrimp were large, fresh & perfectly cooked. The pricing was fair for the amount of food & quality. We also were lucky enough to have a convo with the owner who was so nice and filled us in on the building. Stopped here for a Saturday night dinner. In my search I was talking to my consigliere Nicky Henry about gold horn spots when he mentioned here. Hadn't been so why not. Cool looking place - looks to be hotel/tavern from 1800's that has kept its charm (and interior wood doors and trim). Tall doorways and cool glass work, old school shutters in the interior- all led to its charm. We ordered a crab fondue for an appetizer. This was quite possibly the best item I've had in awhile - it was properly seasoned, cheesy yet smooth and creamy, full of flavor- and just well-executed. The pita slices were a little on the stale side. In addition, I ordered the cream of crab soup - which also was executed perfectly - not chunks of crab but a evenly mixed shredded crab within the soup. Great flavor - seasoned well. For the entree I went with something out of my wheelhouse - a burger. I ordered the double smash burger - which didn't come with a prompt of how I wanted it cooked. Which I can understand since it's a smash burger. The burger was the weakest part of the meal - bun was pretty rough - not very fresh and teetering on stale, the burger meat was very dry, but the 1000island masked it well. For my side I got the Mac and cheese which again - like the fondue was executed perfectly - a nice cheese sauce, Al Senate noodles, creamy and flavorful. Our waitress was pretty spotty too. She was somewhat slow with checking on us despite only one other table being near us. Also she tried giving us the bill without asking about dessert - which we ordered. I ordered the humming bird cake - layered cake with white icing, nuts on top and in the icing - it was good. Had breads been more fresh and service been a little more solid - this would easily be a 5 star for me. Food alone - great spot that deserves a shot! read more

What a nice place! The decor is very historic and fascinating, the service was exceptional. We had a nice meal and a couple of craft beer drafts. Nice selection. The meal was tasty and priced fairly. However, there were some "local" patrons who were exceptionally loud and crass. This took away from the nice job the staff did trying to make it a pleasurable experience. We will try this place again, however, if these "locals" are there we will turn around and leave! read more

I got the lemon pepper cod which was decent . The fresh vegetables medley tasted previously frozen though. The drunken mushrooms were very good, and they have a good draft beer selection, though they did seem under-carbonated. Historic site with good food. The decor definitely conveys the feeling of a bygone era, which is befitting of such an historic property. While the fresh vegetable medley (pictured) appeared to be a heated version of something already prepared, the Pig & Fig pizza (also pictured) was very fresh with a number of complementary flavors. The fresh bacon was salty, and the fig was sweet. I especially enjoyed the cauliflower crust (optional), which blended well with the cheese on the edge to form a perfect crunch. My companion ordered the Clubhouse Sandwich, which arrived with fries (his chosen side). The portion in this case, too, was quite generous. Overall, a great experience. read more

This was top 3 worst restaurant experiences in my life. First of all, it took 15 minutes for anyone to even take our drink order. We ordered chocolate martini and an old fashioned and the rest of our food at the same time. It took over 20 minutes and then our soup came out (still no drinks) and then one drink came out and the server said they needed to get another bourbon from the case for my old fashioned. The crab soup was horrible.. more like a mushy dip that wasn't even really hot. My husband never got his French onion soup and when all of the food came and the soup still didn't come, he told the server he didn't want it. She said "well it has to go through the broiler so it takes a while" and we were like ok but now the rest of the food is here so we don't want it and she just shrugged and walked away. Oh and his salad didn't have the salmon, which she said was still being cooked. When I mentioned that you normally want your protein with your salad she said "we're doing the best we can and I'm not a perfect person" which I thought was a super martyr type way to respond. She said the salmon would be right out, then came back and said it would be about 5-10 min (clearly she forgot to put it in but still never apologized). Then, when I said that's kind of like not ok that we have to wait for that she said "ma'm someone took your old fashioned that's why it was late" ... um what? First she said it was because they were out of bourbon and had to grab one from the back. Cream of crab soup was awesome! Had been looking for crab soup since moving here and finally found it here. The best since leaving Maryland.

My wife and I opted for an entree rather than sandwiches or burgers. Our Old Fashioned cocktails came out and they were great. The crab fondue was delicious but crostini's would have been better than the untoasted pitas. The wild mushroom pasta was not good at all. It came to the table cold, the mushrooms were not sautéed, the steak we added was very low quality and tough. The server did remove it from our bill without us asking, which was very professional and kudos to the manager. We ordered the Pig and Fig pizza to replace the entree and it was good. We both ended up with the scrumptious portobello caprese salad - and I got a side of fresh-cut fries that came out in a massive basket. All very simple but fresh and tasty. Dinner was $23 for the two of us which I thought was quite manageable! Side note - you can tell it's a legit old building that they have really spruced up - just take time to admire the details like the flowers sculpted into the cast iron radiators and the scrollwork on the door hinges. Ordered takeout on New Year's Eve. I got fish and chips. It was two good-sized fish fillets, battered and fried. The fish was cooked well and the sauce with the fish was excellent. Other diner got the club sandwich that they order often. It is absolutely huge and easily shared with another person. The food is a little pricey but seeing that you can get another meal out of it, it is worth it. Would definitely go back. read more

I've only experienced the takeout option here due to covid. But the food is pretty good. I recommend the pub pretzels cause oh my...:I don't know what kind of Magic they did to that cheese but it is delicious. My only complaint is they scaled down the size of the cheese on our last order. I pretty much order the pretzels for the cheese at this point. I've force fed the cheese to a few friends who told me that they doubt the cheese is that good. Let's just say they are addicted as well now. Also I am a fan of their French dip, I had to steal a bite from my old man...:and then run with it as I was not finished tasting....as he chased me around the kitchen. I happened to be in the Altoona area for work traveling with a coworker and when I mentioned that I was a foodie he immediately said that we had to have dinner at this place. There's a really cool and creepy history to it as legend has it that it used to be a hotel that was haunted and the hotel portion has since closed down and the bar and restaurant are still in operation. It's a really old building which adds to the fun ambiance. Now onto the food. The menu was very inviting with a variety of cool app and entree options and for some reason the fish and chips was calling my name so I went with it. I AM AO GLAD I DID! These fish and chips were what I dream of fish and chips being (outside of London) and were perfectly beer battered and crisp and seasoned to perfection! I have not one complaint! I used yelp to find this place while I was on a trek from Columbus Ohio to NYC. I don't like chains or fast food or crappy food. I also don't like chasing food way off my interstate path. This place met my needs perfectly. A bottle of wine priced fairly along with plenty of healthy eating options made this a great stop. I had artichoke dip appetizer, yellowfin tuna and house salad which was made of good greens. My wife had the crab cakes which were baked and therefore not greasy. She loved them. We will be back if we find ourselves heading this way again. Decor / ambience was pleasant. Dining area was pretty but we opted to sit at a bar table and watch the football game. I've been here twice so far. The first time we joined a group of friends for dinner and the live music. Last night we came for bike night. The interior is nostalgic 19th century, and the setting is comfortable. The food has been spectacular both times. I've had their filet mignon and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The mac and cheese is so good it should be illegal. Last night I had the stuffed burger topped with bacon, mushrooms and two cheeses. Definitely a must try!! We sat out on the deck last night, chatted with a few friends that rode over for bike night. The servers are super friendly and attentive and the drinks are awesome. The food is very good, and worth coming back for again and again. But for me the real draw is the building. This old tavern is awesome! The bar even has the original (operational!!) trough in the floor (was it a spittoon?) The upstairs is off-limits to the public because it has not been renovated. But that is exactly why I would love to go up there! Anyway, do go, check out the pix on the walls, the solid old woodwork, the atmosphere and think of the "olden days." Lacking a bit of flavor, but filet was tender and cooked to order, and the potatoes and broccoli literally melted in your mouth. Very generous portions. Couldn't possibly finish the meal. Service wasn't bad, but had no idea about the history of the restaurant. If it's a restaurant that touts is unique antique past, the staff should probably know something about that past.
