0-STARS- We have been patients at Friendly Smiles Dental Office for quite some time, which makes…read morethis experience even more disappointing. My 80-year-old father recently visited the office seeking a straightforward and affordable treatment plan. He currently has an upper denture and a lower partial with two remaining attachment teeth that need extraction. The goal was to create a new upper denture and a new lower implant-supported denture, with two implants intended to support and stabilize the new lower denture. We fully understood that he would require bone grafting beforehand due to significant bone loss. My father does not have dental insurance and trusted the office to provide an honest and appropriate treatment plan. Instead, he was presented with a proposal totaling nearly $26,000. As his daughter, and someone with extensive dental knowledge, I was honestly baffled after reviewing the treatment plan and panoramic X-rays. One of the most concerning issues was the use of dental code D7210, which is intended for the surgical removal of an erupted tooth requiring bone removal, tooth sectioning, or flap elevation. The office proposed using this code for the extraction of my father's two lower teeth and charged $419 per extraction under this surgical code. However, the panoramic X-ray and treatment plan clearly indicate that my father already has severe bone loss and requires bone grafting to preserve what little bone remains for future implant support. In this situation, using a surgical extraction code involving bone removal seems completely inappropriate when a simple extraction code could have been used instead. It felt less like patient-centered care and more like an attempt to maximize billing at the expense of an elderly patient who trusted their guidance. Sadly, this experience reinforced the growing concern many people have about large dental chains prioritizing production and overhead costs over honest, ethical treatment planning. I can only say that I am extremely disappointed in the handling of this case and in Dr. Smiley Jr. specifically. My father deserved transparency, compassion, a realistic treatment plan, and to be presented with alternative treatment options that could have better fit his age, condition, and financial situation not what felt like an excessive and unnecessary financial burden.

Dr. Smiley immediately makes you feel comfortable and answers every question. He is genuine, compassionate and realistic about treatment needs and never makes me feel rushed or pressured into any treatment options. He is super knowledgeable, patient and kind. I've never felt more comfortable in a dental chair. My family travels from another city just to see him for their dental care and implant needs. I highly recommend him oto anyone needing to see a dentist. 5 stars!!!!

Best experience i have ever had with the dentist! Overall superior to all offices…read more I was immediately seen after arriving on time for my appointment that i made the day before and they always made sure i was financially comfortable, meaning that my insurance would cover what i needed like i asked. I had the chance to have all my questions asked and although i usually have a terrible time at the dentist due to my unique teeth and traumatic experiences before, they accommodated accordingly to give me the full and best experience I could get, regardless that my teeth were weird and that i hadn't been there in 2 years. I would 100% recommend and take my family here. The staff on 12/1/21 were exceptional. Thank Tampa dentistry team.

Why does it have to be paid first? I haven't missed not one payment since we made this agreement. I will not be going back. Hell...I don't even want to drive by there. I'll never go back there as long as I live. I still think they should be taking care of this since I'm still paying. Don't want my credit rating dipping if I stop paying them. Or at least, forgive the remaining balance.

I would give a zero if possible. Terrible experience. My dentist was not in town and recommended I…read morego here for a temporary crown. I was there for well over two hours. The assistant did all of the work, unlike a regular dentist who usually does all of that. First you have to sign something because they do not warranty any of their work, and God forbid something happens to the work, then you have to pay for the service again. They are definitely protecting themselves with this form. The temporary they made was very thin, terrible material and fell off the very next day. It split in two because I ended up biting down on it. I would never ever recommend this place to anyone. Do not go here if you can help it.

Once I got there, the bill turned out to be $435.00! Of course when I questioned the amount, I was first asked, "Who told you that?" Um, the person who answered your phone yesterday. "Well, it was just an estimate." Really? $210 off? Whatever. I needed it done and didn't have the ability to wait a week for an appointment with a non-walk in dentist. Then later that Saturday afternoon, I ended up getting Occipital Neuralgia. I had to go to an Urgent care center by Monday when it hadn't stopped. I've had a lot of dental work in my life, so don't know what was different about this visit. Needless to say, even though it was convenient, it was all around unpleasant.

BEWARE OF OVERCHARGING!…read more I strongly recommend that any patient here carefully compare every charge to their insurance EOB. Do not assume the billing is accurate without verifying it yourself! After personally reconciling the office's patient ledger to my insurance Explanation of Benefits, I found over $5k in billing discrepancies. Line by line, I found charges that exceeded the insurance-allowed amounts. For example, one visit was billed at $467, while the allowed amount was $251. These differences were not minor--they added up to a substantial overpayment! What's troubling is that these discrepancies were not identified or corrected by the office. I had to do the reconciliation myself and bring it to their attention. After submitting detailed documentation, including a very detailed and thorough spreadsheet, persistent follow ups and ultimately escalated to take legal action until I finally received a partial refund, well beyond the expected timeframe. Even now, the amount is not fully resolved, and $252 remains in dispute. When billing discrepancies of this size only come to light after a patient conducts their own detailed audit--and then require weeks of pressure to partially correct--it raises serious questions about billing accuracy and internal oversight. Also want to note that they require full payment for procedures up front and don't take in account estimated insurance proceeds. As a result, I ended up over paying by more than $10k! What makes this whole situation worse is that I used to really like this office, had a lot of trust and respect for them but the way I've been treated ever since I started questioning the charges has done a complete 180. They consistently made me feel like a burden and the "bad guy". They did not take accountability at all for the issue and continue to argue with me with no substantial back up. Regarding the actual dental work I received - when I went in to switch out my temporary crowns to the permanent ones (I got crowns on almost all my top teeth), I really didn't like them and weren't like the temporary ones I was wearing for a few weeks. I was almost in tears trying to advocate for myself before they permanently cemented them. They made me feel bad for sending them back, I'm so glad I got the courage to speak up and not accept something I did not like. Ultimately after the second visit, they ended up looking really good but after everything I've dealt with recently, I certainly won't be returning. Who knows how much they overcharged me since 2019 when I first started coming here! If you chose to go to this office, please make sure to pay close attention to your patient charges and the amount they submit to your dental insurance (they should match)! If they owe you a refund, Florida recently based a law that makes it unlawful for healthcare providers to hold onto amounts owed to patients for overpayments over 30 days.

1 star I'm writing…read morethis carefully, because I want anyone reading it to understand this isn't a rant -- it's a timeline. Before I ever came in, I called the office and asked directly: will this visit cost me anything? I was told no. Then at the front desk, I asked again -- and asked specifically whether they had verified my insurance. They said yes, verified, no cost to me. Two separate confirmations, two separate conversations. Weeks later, a $125 bill arrived. When I called to question it, I was first offered a "courtesy discount." Then, suddenly, the story changed: oh, actually, insurance covered a portion -- you only owe $25. Read that again. The bill went from $125 to $25 only because I called. So which is it? Either they never actually verified my insurance before billing me -- meaning the "yes, it's verified" I got twice was false -- or they sent me an inflated bill and hoped I'd just pay it. There is no third option, and neither one is a "mistake." When I pointed out I was told there'd be no cost at all, the answer became "we don't guarantee insurance coverage." Then why did your staff guarantee it -- on the phone AND in person? Nobody said "we can't promise coverage" either time I asked. That disclaimer only appeared after the bill did. A policy you invent after the fact isn't a policy. It's a cover story. To be clear: this is not about $25. I can afford $25. This is about an office that told me one thing twice, billed me five times that amount, and only corrected it under pressure. If I hadn't called, they'd have my $125. How many patients just pay? And it fits the pattern of the entire visit, which was one long sales pitch. I was told I needed gingivitis therapy, antibiotics, AND a deep cleaning at premium prices. They pushed a CT scan, which I declined -- thank God, given what their billing looks like. They even tried to sell me Invisalign, which I never asked about. So I got a second opinion: another dentist told me the antibiotics were not necessary and quoted the deep cleaning at a fraction of the price. The treatment plan wasn't built around my teeth. It was built around my wallet. The front staff is polite -- I'll give them that. But polite is what a sales operation is supposed to be. I've been to Aspen Dental, and at least Aspen never told me twice a visit was covered, billed me $125, and then "discovered" it was $25 when I complained. This is the first dental office I've ever ranked below Aspen Dental. Let that sink in. I've since switched to Bay Premier Dentistry: honest pricing quoted upfront, no surprise bills, excellent work, zero sales pressure. Night and day. What happened at this office isn't "just how dentistry is" -- it's a choice this office makes. To be honest, I wouldn't go to this dentist at all. But if you come here anyway: get every cost in writing before sitting in the chair -- verbal assurances from this office meant nothing for me, twice. Check every bill they send against your insurance's explanation of benefits, because mine was five times what it should have been. Decline anything you didn't come in for, and get a second opinion on any treatment plan. I am reporting this to my insurance company. Not for the $25 -- for the next patient. I understand people are in different financial situations, and I don't want someone getting screwed who can't afford it. A surprise $125 bill built on false assurances could really hurt the wrong person. Shame on them.
