I placed an order online on their website for a camera that was listed as in stock. I was very excited because I have a trip next week and I really wanted to take this camera with me. Hours later, I received an email stating that my order had been flagged by their "Fraud Department" and canceled. I called the business as soon as I saw the email. The first person I spoke to let me know that it may have just been an error and that they still had cameras in stock, so it gave me hope that we could figure something out. But then he transferred me to a woman who told me that my order was flagged because 6 other people in my area had also placed orders that were fraudulent [???????]. I then asked if I could re-order over the phone since it was clearly a mistake on their end, because I'm a real person, my card was charged, my mailing address is residential and real, and she said no, because they actually don't have any of those cameras available anymore. I understand that they are a small business. I found them online through reviews from others, but the process they follow for fraud detection is flawed. They claim they want to "protect their customers," but having a system cancel orders just because multiple orders are coming out of the same area is a terrible way to run a business. I would have preferred if they had just called me before canceling my order. read more

Just traded in a Fuji X100F for a newer X100VI. They gave me top dollar for my old camera and completed the transaction very quickly, professionally and honestly. Further, they sold the X100VI for the MSRP, and not the jacked up price on Amazon and some other less reputable places. I was very impressed by their customer service. Obviously there are other brick and mortar retailers with a bigger online presence like B&H, Adorama, Samy's or even Amazon, but I've found in my experience that Allen's has been quite good with getting their inventory in and out to customers in a timely manner. READ RETURN POLICY. I bought a $6000 Leica camera and after using it inside my house the day after arrival (with less than 20 shutter actuations), I wrote Brandon who told me it would be 20 percent restocking fee. So I'd be paying $1250 for unboxing the camera and returning it 1 day later. I opened the box and the camera already didn't feel like the right fit. I took photos of light in the house. Not a good camera. I'm going to speak to my local Leica sales rep and show the photos. Maybe it's faulty and was sold to me. I do not know. i could see paying 10 percent considering these circumstances but 20 in this case is highly unethical. I bought a $7000 Leica body from Allen's a few years back. I'm a professional Leica shooter. They clearly don't care about customer loyalty. I wanted to start again supporting a local mom and pops store considering I buy a lot of gear but I understand why these places are dying out and will over time. Poor and unethical treatment towards a loyal customer paying for high end gear is poor business practice. even B and H is much better with costumer service. Bought a used D810 and 24-70 lens. Both items arrived exactly as described. The camera had the aprox shutter count as listed online. So no complaints. Two minor spots I discovered on the sensor, but for a used DSLR of this age thats actually not too bad. Nothing that I can't fix in Lightroom until I get it cleaned. So I've been doing business with B&H Photo and Adorama for 20 plus years. NO MORE. I heard about Allen's Camera from a friend of mine that works in the Philly area, and from a YouTuber I subscribe to - Jarid Polin - so after the last horrible trade experience with Adorama D810 to D850 upgrade I thought I would give Allen's a try. WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I called the store, spoke with a nice guy who knew exactly what I was trying to do. He suggested I email info@ and someone will be in touch with me. I was in the market for a Canon 5DSR when Canon ceased production of the camera. I checked all the usual websites to see what was available. The Canon USA website was out, even for refurb'd cameras. I then found Allen's Camera & Video had a used camera in excellent condition at a great price. I emailed an inquiry about the camera, and received a response in about 20 minutes. I ordered the camera on 12/16, and it arrived overnight via UPS Quantum shipping. The camera was in its original box with all the accessories. Before the big box stores took over. Although all the salespeople are great I have loved dealing with Rich Weaver who is so very knowledgeable about everything photographic. Very happy with several purchases from Allen's Camera. The first thing I purchased was a Wimberley Gimbal Head used, then a Canon Battery Grip for a Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 1.4x Extender all used. All were in new condition. I was hesitant to purchase a lens from them because it cost a lot more money. I called them and asked about the lens. They told me they try to accurately advertise their lenses and looked at the lens I wanted. I bought it and couldn't be happier. It came in the original box and appears as new. I brought in an ancient Polaroid camera and was trying to fix the exposure of my images with a flash. It was looking pretty bleak but these guys really took the time to help me figure out what the issue REALLY was. It was pretty busy too so I was surprised at how much time and care they took with me. Allen's comes up in every conversation I have with other local photographers, I am quickly learning that this place is an institution. I've shopped at the other big local retailer over on Street Rd and while Allen's is smaller in size, I think they have a better selection...well more suited to my taste. I'd say while the other place fills its space with a little of everything, Allen's has a lot of specific things and a few extras to boot. Namely a ton of Canon and Nikon gear with all the accessories and a good selection of used bodies and glass too. I didn't get enough time to explore the used medium format gear, but will do so soon. They also seemed to have a good selection of products for your home darkroom, be it analog or digital. As Kevin said, their prices are competitive for a brick & mortar, but you will find everything a good $10+ cheaper at a reputable on-line store. That said, you can't put too high a price on personal service. Having someone to go to when something goes wrong, or when advice on a product is needed is worth the few extra most of the time. all in all a good little camera shop that I am sure will be getting more of my money soon enough. read more

I first went to place because I am always curious about local brick and mortar places. My first experience was ok. I was looking for the Benro Travel Angel and they had them in stock. A worker pulled one from the back and kinda shoved it in my face and left me to open it up and figure stuff out myself. I already drove the 30-45 min there so I got it anyway. They also have a great selection of everything, but as for customer service..... I was checking their website out one day at their used section for Canon L's. I believe I got the owner/manager and I asked about the 70-200mm L that they had. I asked what I thought was normal questions, "Who owned it before, what did they do (wedding, hobby, sports), etc..." He responded by, " What kind of questions are those? Its a good lens, great glass...." I don't know about most people, but before spending more than $1000 on USED glass, I would like to know if there's cuts on the glass, if he was a wedding photog you know there's at least 20,000 shots on it..... Sorry, lost my business bud. Go to Webbcam in center city. They treat customers from first-time buyers and pros with the same respect across the board. read more

I've only been to Allen's twice as I recently discovered them about 25 miles from my home in another state, but they're a great group of people serving the photographic community in an way that's been disappearing...I worked for years in a local camera shop through high school and during and after college, and I appreciate knowledgeable salespeople and the opportunity to interact with like-minded and supportive individuals. Yes, we can shop online, but Allen's prices are the same and you can get hands-on with the equipment and judge things against their competitors firsthand. I thought I would give Allen's Camera a try after shopping at New York Camera for many years. I bought 2 canon cameras and 2 canon L series lenses. One of the L series didn't have image stabilization and I returned it on the same day. They had the nerve of charging me a restocking fee and claimed the lens hood was damaged. This was after spending several thousand dollars on camera equipment there. i was interested in trading my wife's r5 for the r3 and came across allens camera while watching a Jared Polin review and he mentioned Allen's camera. I emailed via their website and provided information on her trade-in. Brandon was the contact and confirmed they had the r3 in stock. in a timely manner, within 10 minutes we were corresponding and after a few questions a value was given. After a brief follow up call to explain the camera was in like new condition except a few small marks around the eyecup, brandon indicated at most perhaps $100 may be deducted. He also informed me there was a special canon event the following day where and addition 10% would be added to the trade. I decided to take the 4+ hour drive from Rhode Island hoping the deal would be done as indicated. The team there exceeded our expectations and was the best experience one could imagine. They honored what was discussed over the phone, super friendly and engaging and it was a pleasurable experience. They even did a firmware update on my 1dx3 while waiting and gave us a beautiful signed print that Jared just took from the philies game. We just missed seeing him at the store and would have been extra special to meet him as he does a great job. Came here on the off chance they would purchase some old camera equipment I received from family members. Now keep in mind I don't know anything about photography. I went into the store which was bustling and lively. Greeted quickly and explained I was looking to get rid of some lens. Was Informed they generally just do trade ins but will look at what I have, to see if anything was worth purchasing. The technician checks out the lens and shows interest in one but has some dust in it so they chose not to purchase. Everyone there was polite and efficient. This place has incredibly good deals on some used equipment. I purchased a used d7100 for $600 and some change and that included shipping! It was the only d7100 that they had used and for that price I was an idiot not to buy it. When I got home and opened the box I felt a warm tingling sensation in my heart. I now behold before me a tool said to have been forged by none other than Zeus himself. I held its mighty girth in my hands basking in the ambiance. But to my surprise something wasn't right. I took a closer look and... It was filthy like its previous owner had taken it backpacking across the Sahara. I opened the front cap and I thank Sasquatch I didn't just slap my lens on it and start shooting. There was sand, the kind you'd find on the beach, all along the f-mount. Oh it was grim. I spent the following hour walking my dog; then the hour after that was spent cleaning this poor neglected defenseless camera. After a thorough cleaning I took it for a test drive. "HOLY SHIT!" I said to myself. " I love this camera!" To the staff of Allen's: thank you for this amazing camera but please if you take anything away from this let it be to clean your used products before selling. Also there was a bag that just had a power cable in it, doesn't even go to the camera. It looks like a laptop charger. I don't know if this was an isolated incident or not, I do continue to do business with you but just something I thought you might want to consider. read more

I went to Allen's to buy my first DSLR and I sort of expected a snotty, we're a pro shop, you're just an amateur sort of vibe but I didn't get that at all. What I got was fantastic customer service with tons of information explained to me in a way in which I could understand. It was all simplified but I wasn't talked down to and I really appreciated that. They sold me the camera I wanted and went through all the different kits, lenses, and rebates to find me the best deal on the best options for me. While other store are demanding 20%+ over MSRP Allen's Camera has not budge because the manufacture has not raised the prices contrary to what other stores are claiming.
