Amazing store! New York Camera & Video are not only affordable and carry a large offering, they are very attentive and helpful. I have recently ran through all my 35 mm colored film and have been searching everywhere for them. After several failed attempts because of the shortage, I tried one last time and found New York Camera & Video. I called to see if they have what I was looking for and they did! Not only were they in stock, they were $5-$15 cheaper than all the other stores I had came across. The staff offered to save me some just in case and I was able to quickly pick them up. I just picked up a wedding video transfer to thumb drive that's been kicking around our "still moving in pile" from California (we've been here for almost 3 years) I haven't even looked at the tape but I'm confident it'll be great. I brought in 2 tapes, apparently one was just old tv shows and a basketball game, but the staff there stood with me and reviewed the whole tape again to be sure. I just mentioned in passing we are a Mac household and when I pulled out the thumb drive from the bag "formatted for Mac" was written on a post it. That is thorough. Let's face it, camera shops are getting rarer and rarer so finding a good one is like finding a unicorn. Unfortunately NY Camera and Video isn't a unicorn. It looks like one at a distance but up close and personal it's a donkey with a horn taped to it's head. First off, the customer service there is hit or miss. Some of the younger staff are actually OK to work with. But if you get a veteran or someone with authority (owner / manager) it's a different story. Want an example? Ok, fine: I went in one day and inquired about a specific lens they did not have on the sales floor. An older "gentleman" said this to me ... his words as exactly as I can recall... "If I go into the stock room and get you this lens will you buy it? I don't want to waste my time." Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to waste your time by trying to spend hundreds of dollars at your store. Second issue: Selection. See my story above. Maybe they have what you want, maybe it's in the back. You won't know unless you ask and potentially run the risk of stirring up the ire of a salesman. No, their selection is actually pretty good. They do carry full lines of gear, a nice selection of supporting products and tons of used equipment. Their selection earns them the second of their 2 stars. With reservations... Third: Prices. Seriously guys? Why would anyone pay full MSRP when you can get big discounts from online retailers?? Why? Because of excellent customer service ... oh, that's right, their customer service isn't exactly "excellent". My recommendation: Sure, pull in, check the place out. They do have a nice selection compared to smaller mall stores or Best Buy... but just window shop. Better prices are a mouse click away and there are plenty of retailers (on and offline) that would love and appreciate your business. I'm not kidding when I say I've had better buying experiences at Best Buy... kinda sad actually. Oh, and I DID end up buying that lens. Online. For less. read more

This, unfortunately, is the norm for camera stores. It's been a while since I stepped into a place and was welcomed like a human being ready to dump their income to keep you open; instead, you're treated as kind of a burden. I can't ever shake the feeling that I'm not quite welcome, and even though I'm helped [eventually], there never seems to be any sincerity in answering my questions or helping me. What happened to customer service? Wishing there was a way to make this funny, I'm just left disappointed by the bias, uneducated, fanboyism that's so prevalent in the industry. I'm rating them down due to poor service, but the selection is large and the prices aren't terrible compared to B&H/Adorama considering they're right outside Philly. If you go in there with an inkling of what you want and don't need help finding it, it'll serve its purpose. read more

These days, brick and mortar camera stores are hard to come by, and being a person who likes to see things in person prior to purchase, NYCV fits the bill. I have been shopping here for over 13 years (including their time over on Bridgetown Pike) and have been happy with what they have to offer. Knowledgeable staff, good rental selection and everything from bags to tripods to studio lighting equipment. With internet camera stores taking the forefront these days, it's nice to know I can still speak with someone face to face, see and try the equipment and make an educated purchase at a good price. I still recommend all my friends and family to shop here. In addition to equipment, they also have a well known processing lab with many printing options. A good selection of papers from matte and glossy to canvas and metallic. They can adjust your images for you or print them as is. Very consistent processing whether digital or analog. Before writing this review I did read everybody's review on other sites first and I just wanted to say that they do have a wide selection of equipment, gear, accessories and other things surrounding photography. And they even have knowledgeable people. But that's where my gripe comes in.. Every time I go into the store I end up waiting forever for anybody to even recognize that I exist or might need help. Granted everyone is with someone but it doesn't take much to say "someone will be right with you." Now, that could just be me being selfish as far as a reader knows, but it gets better.. I was in the store last week looking at camera bags and since most of their items aren't listed with a price, you have to ask. So I waited.. and waited.. and waited some more. There was a store rep in the same room with another customer so I figured I'd wait patiently for my turn. I was in no hurry. But after awhile of me standing there looking at the same bags and trying to make eye contact they continued to talk about the health of their colons. (Come on. You can't make that up). So I decided to give an internet based business my money and left. But I went back just today because I really need more room to store my gear. So this time I grabbed the bag in question and took it up to the counter and waited there for help. Which wasn't too long. After getting rung up and about to leave the girl behind the counter handed me my receipt and just turned away, but still standing in front of me. Never said a word. I wasn't sure if something else was printing out and I needed to stick around. It wasn't until another customer came up to her to ask a question that I finally caught on that I was OK to leave. So in conclusion, it is a good store with a lot of different options for all parts of photography. And from what I could tell most of the people there are knowledgeable. But try to get someone's attention for help or don't go there when you're in a hurry. And when they give you a receipt remember, Thank you and have a great day! My suggested solution to the consumer: go there to look at the things they have and purchase it online. That's what I am doing now that I returned the bag I just purchased from them. read more

I probably should have waited to review this place because I am still on the fence here. I went in about a month ago to just scope out camera equipment as I was interested in purchasing my DSLR. After waiting for quite some time (on a Saturday afternoon) I was finally able to talk to someone. I worked with Tom, who was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and most importantly he was patient with a beginner like myself and my million questions. After working with Tom I decided to put stuff on hold and come back the following weekend to make my big purchase. After waiting again for quite some time (I don't get why they don't staff more people on the weekends - it's obviously the day with the most traffic!) I was helped by a young gentleman, I can't remember his name, sorry buddy! He did a decent job of ringing me up and getting me set up with everything I wanted. He was even super nice to me when I came back a few hours later to exchange my camera bag for something different. The only thing I am a little "irked" about is the fact that they offer these "one-on-one photography classes". Well I really would like to take one, but when I called to set one up you could only do week days or week nights. For the average working woman, that doesn't fly. Part of the reason I purchased my camera here is because I knew that was available to me for only $50 at any time. Now it seems it will cost me $50 plus a half a days pay to get there in enough time. (I work in NJ..eeek long drive). Overall I'd say they did a nice job but it would be helpful and definitely increase their business if they had more employees available on the weekends (or maybe just a number machine like at the deli supermarket?). The store is HUGE with a TON of items that need sales associates to unlock and explain. It just makes sense to have more people on hand. Although I have a US Passport, I also hold Greek citizenship and needed very special photos for the Greek passport. The specifications for these photos are quite strict and specific and I was running into issues finding someone to take the photo. These guys are awesome and so accommodating. As someone in the film industry, I cannot recommend this place enough. While I was in college, I had the luxury of renting film equipment. I love this place! I bought my camera from them. It was a used professional camera, but was perfect. New, this camera was around $1500, I paid a lot less. I recently had them do some editing for a promotional DVD. They did a fantastic job! Both Jacob and Connor were amazing! They completed the project when they said it would be completed. New York camera was recommended to me by my parents that have bought various cameras, lens, and accessories from there before. My parents gave me their old Nikon D-60 as a starter camera and sent me to New York Camera for the multiple critical camera parts that were missing (lens, battery, battery charger). The customer service was great, I was approached by John as soon as I walked in the door. He was able to get me everything I needed and offered me used products (nikor lens & charger) understanding it was just a starter camera. I don't do a ton of business here but the few times I went in, they had exactly what I needed, and on the few occasions a salesman had to go back to the warehouse, it was because they offered to do so. The last time I was there, i was desperate because I needed to pick up some additional camera batteries for a shoot I was heading off to the next day. They stayed open after hours to accommodate me. It's kind of a relief that it was not only me who was treated as an invisible person. I went there to see if they can fix my old film camera. Maybe to substitute a lens if possible. I waited for some help and wandered around for 15 minutes and it was like a ghost house! None of the employees care about coming-in customers. When it finally got crowded by confused customers, some guy came up and asked what he could do for the next customer. He checked my camera for a second and mumbled, who would use this type of camera and lens nowadays. Basically he looked down upon me. Since I was thinking about getting a sub-camera for daily use anyways, I asked him if he could show me any suggestions and there he goes again! Mumbling to himself or to cameras about the price and stuff. He frequently asked if I was taking a class He then finally suggested me to use a cell phone to take a picture. I wonder how he would've acted if I brought all of my gears with me. I would NEVER, EVER go back to this store. I, too, strongly suggest to go online stores for purchasing and never this store for fixing. read more
