We reached out to Alleycat Exterminating when we began to have some more visitors in our apartment of the mouse and roach variety after our cat died. Don talked my husband through some steps we could take to try and plug any holes and fix the issue on our own if we wanted to but after finding a few more bugs we decided to make an appointment to have professionals help. Lauren stopped by, did a thorough check of our whole apartment, and ended up calling in someone else to bring additional materials to help ensure our problems were solved. Both she and her husband (it's a family business!) did a great job explaining what they were doing, what they were using, and answer any questions we had. The traps they leave behind and poison they use are childproof and pet safe, and also placed in ways to limit chances of small kids or pets to even get to them. Their fee was incredibly reasonable, they're communicative, and I finally feel like I can sleep a little easier. They'll be coming back to check-in in a few weeks to make sure there are no new signs of anything and discuss any next steps as needed but we are feeling optimistic and taken care of by friendly, reasonable professionals. In our experience, we found Don and Alleycat to be the absolute best exterminator when dealing with rodents for at least a few reasons: 1. they're incredibly responsive 2. they're passionate about the work that needs to be done and making people's lives' more comfortable 3. they're effective in their problem solving (and creativity) 4. they've asked us for $0 after a month working together even though I've offered to throw money their way a few times! Note: I think the reason they haven't charged us is that Don gave me all the advice via text and I executed it. This was my first time having to deal with rodents directly as my wife and I just bought a place last year. Usually we'd just ask our landlord to deal with it but the onus was on us this time. I used to be terrified of rodents until now. Backstory: We found out in December we had rodents going into our basement drop ceiling because our neighbor's shared party wall had openings in their foundation and their own basement walls. So we could hear the rodents scratching and gnawing their way in there as it got colder outside and knew something was going on. Luckily we had a speaker in the ceiling so I brought it down and lo and behold - rodent droppings and chewed up insulation came down with it. I was thoroughly disgusted, dismayed, I thought my life was gonna end right there. I placed a video camera up there and closed it back up to see what they were getting up to. I also called up a few exterminators in late December and then I found Don. He picked up right away even though he was under the weather, my wife and I described the issue to him. First off, Don helped build confidence - he told us we've got this - I couldn't comprehend exactly what he meant but it was nice to hear that he wasn't as worried as I was! Over the next month, Don guided us on what to do along the way. Why was it taking so long to eradicate the issue? We had to work offense and defense at the same time: while we were aggressively placing 10-12 snap traps in the ceiling to combat any rodents (from where the speaker was and we also created an access panel), we also had to work with our neighbor to close up any outdoor entry points. Luckily, we've had an awesome neighbor who has been collaborative about fixing the problem. One of our favorite parts was the approach that Don had: he told us exactly which traps to get on Amazon and then when it came to the bait he told us the types of smoked meats, fruits, dark chocolate, oils, etc. to use and they worked! I always thought peanut butter was the main option, but it actually wasn't that effective in this case. Buffet approach is the way to go. Anyway, you might be horrified to know that over a few weeks I caught a couple of dozen rodents this way during the winter. At one point I thought about waking up every morning and putting on warpaint before heading down there I was so adamant about battling them. Now, we don't see any signs of rodents at all anymore, and we're taking additional steps to make sure it's all fixed for the long term. Definitely, absolutely couldn't have been able to do this mentally or physically without Don. You'll be lucky to work with him and team. You don't have to approach it the way we did, but hopefully you find comfort in knowing they know what the hell they're doing and aren't trying to rip you off doing it. Don is literally the best exterminator in Brooklyn but almost more importantly, he's a gem of a person. He know's exactly where to look and the nature of different building structures in Brooklyn, a true and tried expert who doesn't cut corners! I first used his services in my old apartment when I lived alone and had a mouse problem. My landlord's crappy exterminator didn't solve the problem. Don came in, made me laugh, put me at ease and resolved the issue in one visit. My current apartment with my husband is older and we've basically seen mice once a year. Our current landlord's exterminator is NEVER able to solve the issue so we end up calling Don about once a year. He comes over, fixes the shoddy work that the other guy did and we don't see a mouse for a whole year. Don came over last weekend to have a look at our space since we've had a nonstop parade of various insect friends since March -- ants, drain flies, house flies, occasional cucaracha. He identified the sources of each separate issue and gave advice on how we could combat them. Don at Alleycat is incredible. Years ago he did a visual inspection to confirm a case of bedbugs and was so calm and kind to my very freaked out roommates and I. Don throughly inspected every bed room and living room and did it with patience and kindness while I asked a multitude of questions. Prompt, communicative and thorough! I have never written a Yelp review before, but had to vouch for this company because mice can be so hard to deal with in NYC! I spoke to Don who told me about their mouse service, and had his daughter who works for him reach out to me immediately. We were able to schedule the appointment for them to come inspect our building easily over text, and Lauren texted me the night before to confirm the appointment. I wasn't able to be onsite the day of the appointment, so had the tenant who spotted the mouse in her apt. let Lauren in. Although we had treated the entire building for mice before, including stuffing all holes in the walls with steel wool, Lauren quickly found a hole we had missed, and not only did she plug the hole, but she checked all the holes I had plugged as well and added some copper mesh to all areas to make sure the mice couldn't get back in. We had been hearing mice in our kitchen in Brooklyn for a few weeks and when we woke up to holes in our bread bag it was the last straw. We called Don- who was super helpful- and gave us some suggestions to try over the phone. He was so nice, patient, not trying to sell us anything and seemed to want us to try and solve the problem on our own. Don is my hero. I've had a terrible mouse problem since November. I tried a different exterminator a couple times and they still kept coming. Don! Don is a lifesaver. When I found a bedbug on my wall, I texted a picture to Don. He replied right away (and confirmed that it was a bedbug), and so I gave him a call to schedule treatment -- and mentioned that, oh, by the way, we've had German roaches terrorizing us for seven months, too. He showed up to address both issues, and made sure I knew what he was doing every step of the way -- in fact, he suspected the lone bed bug had traveled from a neighbor, and took the time to show me exactly where he thought it had come from (a light switch on a shared wall), then treated the area. Now, here's the part where I tell you that I've had four -- four! -- exterminators treat for German roaches, and that I was starting to accept the fact that I'd be living alongside them forever. Don came in though and treated every cabinet in the kitchen (he even took them off the hinges to treat and then put them back on), along all the baseboards, and around all the appliances. He showed me where roaches tend to hide, and pointed out areas of concern -- physically, with a flashlight, making sure that I could see, too. When he came for the two-week follow up, he let me know what we were looking for, and how he could tell that things were improving. These roaches are an issue long embedded in our building, and Don took the time to figure out a plan -- and assured me that a roach free future is possible! (And for what it's worth, I've not seen another bed bug since his first spray.) On top of his meticulous work, Don is warm and kind and personable (and funny -- and it's nice to laugh when you're looking for roaches in your kitchen, trust me). For the first time in dealing with an exterminator, I feel heard. He told me when we spoke on the phone that first time that he was personally invested in helping me solve my roach problem, and I know now that he truly meant it. Don is the best discovery I have made in New York. This is not your regular exterminator. He is a mouse anthropologist. He examined the evidence, traced the tracks, observed the patterns and found the "nest". He diagnosed us with "one juvenile male mouse, most likely the runt of the litter". Not just that. He thoughtfully devised a plan that would help us get rid of him quickly. We followed his instructions, left for the night and when we came back mid-morning the next day, the trap was successful. Really happy I found these guys. We've had a mouse problem for a while now and the previous exterminators clearly didnt do a great job as they been running amok in our little apartment. Got a few quotes from a bunch of companies and Alley Cat were the most reasonably priced and had great reviews, so went with them. They were polite, warm and friendly from the get-go, and were able to make an appointment to come round just a few days later. I have a thick accent and they heard the wrong address on the phone, so on the day they called and asked where I was but were super accommodating about the error and promptly showed up (still within the hour window they gave me). Don, the exterminator, was an absolute delight. He says he's being doing this his whole life and it really shows. He used a cable camera (not seen any other exterminators use one of these!) and showed me where the little buggers where getting in. He also closed up a bunch of holes and crevices around the apartment. He's full of knowledge and very happy to share, so I actually learnt a lot during his visit.
