Last Saturday, I wanted to see my first movie at a theatre since February 2020. I wouldn't classify myself as a regular movie person, but I do miss the entire experience of seeing a flick on a big screen, slurping back a drink, and stuffing myself with some snack. My original plan was to see No Time to Die, which is the newest 007 movie and the last for Daniel Craig, at Cineplex Eglinton Town Centre. There were two theatres showing matinees at 2:30 pm. It was too good to be true, though. I arrived before 2 pm and these times were gone. The next showtime was 3:20 pm. I did a search on my phone for other theatres with closer start times. This Cineplex in the Beaches had a start time of 2:55 pm. I have never been there before. And so, I picked up and left on a rainy afternoon. I'm glad that I didn't buy a ticket online for Cineplex Eglinton. I went ahead and did it for Cineplex Beaches. I realized that I had a credit to use up. Yay, almost-free movie! The downside to hitting this cinema is that parking is not free. I did find a Green P lot behind this theatre that offered afternoon parking till 6 pm for $3. Perfect! I paid using my Green P app and was done. I walked over to the entrance that faces the Country Style donuts that I first visited on a school trip when I was four years old. I grew up in the Beaches. Where this theatre sits used to be Greenwood Racetrack. Yep, I hadn't been here in eons. I barely remember that racetrack experience, as I was a little kid with my dad. Although the signage says Alliance Cinemas, it is indeed a part of the Cineplex umbrella. I walked in and got a super helpful man who greeted me. I am so out of it as a movie-goer these days. He let me know that I needed to show my ID and proof of vaccination. I got the latter out first. The QR code on my screenshot worked like a charm. I used my driver's licence for the former and all was great. He let me know that I needed to have my movie ticket scanned by the next person. I visited the women's washroom first. My movie had a playing time of 2 hours and 48 minutes. The washroom was exceptionally clean. Everything was nicely stocked and in working order. I was impressed. I hadn't had lunch. I went with my go-to meal at Cineplex, which is the hot dog and nachos combo. I had an efficient man take my order. I got my Scene points barcode scanned and paid with a credit card. He had my order completed quickly, but didn't say that it was ready until I saw it on a ledge closer to him than me. I took everything, thanked him, and headed to get my ticket scanned. My Diet Coke was so full that it spilled out from the top when I pulled out my phone. I got my ticket scanned and then headed around to the same place where I had just grabbed napkins and a straw. I wiped my hand down and proceeded to the theatre. I love this movie theatre. It's quiet. I had an entire row to myself. It's clean. The seats are comfortable. I used another seat next to me to put my purse and hoodie there. It was great eating in a movie theatre again. My hot dog was yummy. I got packets of relish and ketchup. I don't remembered getting so many corn chips to dip into my cheese sauce. I spent half the movie breaking each one in half so I could dip them into the cheese. So good! I haven't grown a third arm yet from the liquid cheese. The movie was excellent. It didn't feel like I was there for three hours. I had a wonderful experience and felt safe. Everyone followed rules for wearing face masks and keeping their distance within the theatre. It was another impressive point. Fact: I have seen every Bond flick with Daniel Craig in it. I used the washroom afterwards because I had downed a lot of my massive drink. The washroom's cleanliness continued to earn top marks. I've never been so happy visiting a theatre before. It's the perfect edition to the west side of the Beaches. I'm okay shelling out for parking for such a positive movie-going experience. I'm a fan. As always, I will start by saying that I don't get out to the movies much these days, and while this is partly because many popular movies don't appeal to me enough to pay $12+ to see them, it is also because many of the big newer cinemas are all noise and advertising and video games. Having said that, I did decide to go to The Beach Cinemas for old times' sake. I have been there many times in years past when it was newly-built on the old Greenwood Racetrack. I seem to recall it has gone thru a few owners before Alliance; I think at one time it shared a membership plan with the old Cumberland Four in Yorkville. This past Tuesday, I went down to watch Wonder Woman, and the experience was okay. My first impression upon entering the building was that it seemed a little worn. The big open lobby is now very small, with a (kind of ugly) box office right near the doors, and a few concessions around the perimeter. It was not too busy, as most other reviewers have pointed out, but that's fine for me. The theatre that I was in was big enough, and the audio and movie quality were fine, although it appears that they don't support all of the newest formats. Overall, everything was okay, but not as nice as I remember it being, although still preferable to most of the big noisy theatres that I avoid. read more

I love this theater! It's small and comfortable, it feels just like home. The staff are amazingly nice. You can tell it's not just another faceless corporation. They let us use coupons for another theater here because we didn't realize they were wrong. Who else would do that? No one! The tickets are a great price anyways. Best of all, unlike some of the other big theater the beaches cinema is almost never busy. We always go see things opening weekend here when it's sold out in other places. The popcorn and drinks are smaller than other theaters, but who really needs 10 gallons of pop anyways? They also have a great patio out front so you can arrive early and have a Starbucks coffee with friends on a nice day. If you want to skip the crowds this is the place to go. read more

In my humble opinion, this is one of the best cinemas in Toronto. Not only is it impeccably clean, cheap and comfortable, it's just a couple of blocks away from me. Who could ask for more? Me, that's who. And there is more: I am smitten by their $5 movie nights on Tuesday and Wednesday. What a PERfect way to break up the week and see some blockbusters (this theatre tends to play the big-ticket movies, although they do get prestige films sometimes, too). There is a combo deal, too, where you get popcorn and a drink for an extra $5. They have reallly good, fresh popcorn and they use becel or butter.... not the yellow goop I've seen at other theatres. Plus, they have a TCBY if you're in the mood for some frozen yoghurt. One really nice feature of the theatre is the open-air café-style seating. If you're early for the show, or meeting friends, you can order a coffee at Far Coast and enjoy some people watching--or play checkers on the table/boards, neither of which I've ever done.. it's just nice to know the option is there. Now that The Burger's Priest is open across the street I think burger/movie Tuesdays are going to be a very sacred tradition of mine for years to come. read more

I think this is quickly becoming my go-to cinema. There is something magical about showing up on a Sunday afternoon with only 10 minutes before your recently released movie starts and still getting an amazing seat (and that's after a bathroom and concession stop). Not to mention the sheer bliss that comes with using a line-free washroom post film. Is it also possible that this theatre also attracts a different kind of theatre-goer than the downtown cinemas do? I saw a comedy last weekend and not once was I distracted by someone playing on their phone or deciding that their high-school grade gossip was more important than the movie that others had paid to see. I can't remember the last time I was able to say that upon leaving the Yonge-Dundas or Scotiabank movie theatres. I've really hated the movie-theatre experience lately, but if the Beaches can get all the releases I want to see, I may be won back. Don't break my heart, Beaches! read more

Beaches Cinema is one of two siblings belonging to the parent Al Alliance. Sometimes he goes by his full name Alliance, but if i was him, to keep face, i would probably do the same, so let's give'm a break. well Al's got it set up real nice, with fancy patterned carpeting, nothing too gauche; if you decide to come early to beat the crazy baby boomer crowd than youll have the opportunity to sit down comfortably at tables provided in front of a full espresso bar. (havent tried the espresso - cant quite come around to abandoning the classic popcorn and pop combo). If its nice outside feel free to sit on the open air patio while listening to some crazy licks from the featured xylophonist. yes. its true they do have a little stage set up for its patrons. they, of course, have the regular setup with popcorn, etc and its cheaper than bigger hoopla theatres and yet the theatres are large, the seats comfortable and there is never a problem with someones head in front on yours blocking your view. whats more, Al's got it set up for you to pay a membership fee of about 20 bucks per year which gives you discounts on ticket prices, concession stuff and selected restaurants around the area. or perhaps city. if you are an avid movie goer, its worth it, especially if you live close by. the cumberland theatre is the other member of the family. read more

Is this the last cinema in the city that isn't a Cineplex? Boo to that, because I wanted to use my Scene card. Seats were so uncomfortable I had to keep shifting every three minutes to not get a butt cramp. Popcorn good, staff friendly. Nothing special though. read more

This theatre definitely has its pros, like how it's always quiet and there's lots of free/cheap parking nearby. However, it is annoying that although they are listed on the cineplex website as one of their theatres, they aren't actually a cineplex theatre in the traditional sense so they don't take scene cards, cineplex gift cards/passes, and they don't have TimePlay. The theatres themselves are not huge, and they don't sell anything interesting at the concession stand (other than some basic Starbucks options). However, it being a quiet theatre with parking, I do go see movies here on occasion. It's a nice place that just needs a touch more love (and cineplex integration). read more

This theatre is ok as far as the big cinemas go but my GOD do they air a lot of ads before the movies. And I am not talking about trailers, which I like. But like TV ads for all kinds of crap. I had to sit through almost 20 minutes of commercials (not an exaggeration) before the trailers started, and then the movie. What is my admission ticket for if I have to watch ads before I can watch the movie? Will never, ever go back. read more

It's got good access to transit and it's the only cinema in the area so points for that. It's a little small and run down. Oddly there are no refills on the large drink unlike many other cinemas in Canada. I don't have any complaints about the staff. This place gets the job done but it's not the best in category. The people who work here are great (which is why I gave 3 stars not 2) but the movie-going culture is very different from what we are used to in the city centre. Lots of talking, late-comers who then chose to sit right beside us (none of that one-seat buffer courtesy), and the person beside me would lean over and ask questions. We kept telling people to be quiet, and when we got up to change seats, they looked at us like we were crazy. It could be a one-off situation, but a friend of mine told me she went to this theatre once and had a similar experience and never went back again. I won't be going back again. read more

I don't understand how this cinema is still in business. My wife and I have been living in the area for years and this cinema is never busy. But that's to our advantage. The theaters are almost never full, the space is not busy and relatively quiet and the staff are nice. Sometimes the popcorn isn't very fresh because the concession staff try to use every kernel. Either way, I still plan on coming regularly (as long as the place is still in business). read more

Comfortable, relaxed and inviting to all - families, friends and singles. Nice industrial ambiance and service is top notch. We went to see "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" here on Sunday afternoon. Sunday afternoon of the weekend the movie came out... we booked our tickets online to be sure they didn't sell out, and went 45 minutes early to ensure we got seats. My friend had warned me about the lineups on Saturday at the Scotiabank Theatre. I was putting into place safety measures. I was so focused on getting into this movie that I forgot my iPhone at home. This will become more important than it seems later in the story. We were among about 20-30 people arriving to see movies at all screens. Mr. Rosie S. was hungry and we assumed they would have some options for a lunch-type nosh. NOPE! Food options are lacking SEVERELY. And the only available substantial "meal" was hot dogs (of course, they also had nachos, popcorn, candy and chocolate, Yogen Fruz and slushies), and they weren't going to be ready for another half an hour (after the movie started)... so Mr. Rosie S. took off to eat, and I was charged with saving us seats ASAP! When Mr. came back from his meal, he was charged with getting us snacks. Apparently, when the guy in front of us who was ALSO hungry and expecting meal options was like, "What am I supposed to do? Can I go grab food from somewhere else and bring it in?" And guess what? They were actually cool. They let him bring it in. So that is worth one-half star. That star's other half is made up of the pleasing ticket prices. It was about $20 for the two of us. Lovely, and unexpectedly cheap. I have some inkling as to why. So. I make my way as quickly as possible to the theatre so I can snag us good seats before they're all taken. I am the first to arrive to the empty, soul-sucking void that is a theatre at The Beach Alliance Cinema. That was the least enjoyable theatre I've ever been in. Please at least some elevator music? Even a cheesy radio station? Let your ushers and cleaning staff take turns with their ipods? The only reading material I could find in the building was the Beach Danforth SNAP and Beach Life mini-magazine. So nothing to read for longer than five minutes, and I was the only person there. There wasn't even stupid trivia or ads on the screen. I don't care how stupid it is... anything is better than a loud, constant feedback drone. OY! You could promote community events through the BIA, put up the CP24 feed, do a slideshow of historic photos of your building's history, or the area, or SOMETHING... advertise your lobby snacks... I don't know. Listen, you could arrange a partnership with the aforementioned publications you stock in the lobby: you get ads in their paper/mag, they get to create and run their own advertising client ads pre-show on your screens. Or maybe they could sell your screen ad space for you - either as a third party or as a partner who offers it as a top-level ad buy and then passes some of the revenue on to you. Just sayin. You could swap ad space with a radio station too. Visuals AND audio. Amazeballs. Remember how I forgot my phone? I couldn't check my email, play a game, look at the weather... I didn't even have a pen to work on my grocery list. It was effing CREEPY being alone in a semi-dark, silent (except for the feedback zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) movie theatre... with nothing to do and no one to look at. I think keeping us "plugged in" is part of customer service in this niche of the entertainment industry (i.e. movie theatres). I don't require a suped-up fancy laser-show arena-style theatre, but I either need a) ambiance (vintage and rep theatres apply here) or b) distraction - in the form of ANYTHING I have listed elsewhere in this review: reading material, arcade games, food, in-theatre ads, a musical background... I chewed through an entire pack of Bubblemint gum before FINALLY a family showed up (HUMANS!!!) and there was something else for me to focus on besides the empty, buzzing, shadowed nothingness... that is, the emptiness and the impending Yelp review... Thank goodness. We paid $17.50 for two packages of candy ($2.49 in any store - swedish berries and skittles) and two SMALL fountain drinks. FOUNTAIN, NOT BOTTLES. They probably MAKE money selling that stuff. Or it's like 3 cents a month for them. And it's not the movie theatre 20-oz. "SMALL", it was like an actual small. Like a coffee cup. Like a medium Tim Hortons coffee cup. Ouch. BUT all in all, the movie worked... that's the other star. We watched it start to finish with no issues. Played right through. Sweet. But that's kind of not the point. Isn't their job to create an atmosphere? And NO, your five arcade games circa 1997 don't count. Especially since they're in a narrow hallway, not a room. They're an eyesore, not a viable option for entertainment. Am I spoiled? Maybe, but next movie date night, we're going to try the OTHER closest movie theatre to our new 'hood, at Eglinton Town Centre. read more

It's never busy here. You don't need to get here an hour in advance to get a seat at most films. Washrooms are clean. Theatres are in great condition. It's my preferred movie theatre and I recommend this location to all of my friends. read more

I love this theatre! Gives you that small town feel. It's a small place with not many theatre rooms, but great service and close to home!

Oh I remember the days when this place was the 'it' spot. In the summer the windows near the concession stand were open to the street and live music was playing. It really made going to the movies an event. You certainly wouldn't just show up wearing your sweats. And the variety of food that was available? Why eat before getting there. Now it's stale popcorn and microwaved hot dogs. Is it clean inside? Yes but there's a sense of abandonment hanging around. The sidewalks are dirty with scraps of debris, the landscaping is well overgrown....but the 'sketchiness' of the experience goes all the way to their parking lot behind the theatre. Once reserved for theatre patrons and strictly patrolled it is now the general storage for cube vans, RVs and even a couple of boats....yep, you'll have to carefully pick the safest spot in the lot and pay 4 bucks for the privilege of parking in the same area that someone is using as their living quarters. It's been there for months, the stairs are down and there's a vehicle parked next to it. Where else can you live in the beach so cheaply? Still creepy. Can you show up just minutes before a first-run movie starts and get just about any seat you want? Yes and for convenience the box office is closed. You have to buy your tickets at the concession stand. However with all that, you get to experience a venue on the decline. This place should be first choice for the Beach and area for 1st run movies (I'm not including The Fox in this) but instead people are going to Eglinton Town Square or downtown. Ownership and management have plenty of opportunity to corner the market in the neighbourhood but have decided that it doesn't deserve to be anything but neglected. And that's sad. read more

I finally sprung for the membership to this theatre since I've been here so many times. As soon as I do that, the cosmic forces of the universe bring shitty movies to the theatre so I didn't even use my pass for 2 months. Despite this, I still love the beaches cinema (i refuse to acknowledge the singular form of "the beaches")! The membership gets you a buck off the regular price ticket (can't use on cheap nights) and free parking in that lot on Eastern. The theatres aren't monster-size. The seats are comfortable and at a good slope so even if a person of high stature sits in front of a vertically-challenged person like myself, you can still see the screen. It's clean and the floors aren't incredibly sticky like other theatres so you don't feel like you're going to leave the sole from your shoe behind. You know what's a heavenly night? A burger from Burger's Priest then a good movie here with popcorn (yes, there's always room for popcorn!). read more

This cinema is great. Clean and tidy, friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Ignore the moany 2 star review, this is a cinema not a restaurant. If you want to eat a meal, there's plenty of places to go within a couple of minutes walk. Personally I don't want you to stink out a cinema with your dinner. read more

This and Varsity are the only chain cinemas in the city that we go to. Staff are always friendly, the theatres are clean, and they have the best popcorn. I don't know if it's a different butter but it blows the Cineplex stuff out of the water. Otherwise it is just a theatre, but the addition of the free parking and discounted tix/food for members makes it just that little bit better. Plus way less annoying kids than Dundas Square, etc. read more

Staff is actually friendly and personable instead of the robotic employees at other cinemas. Good prices, good popcorn, clean. They also honour cineplex paper coupons even though they're not a cineplex, just to be courteous. read more

I love this place, just came back from a late night movie. Today there were only 7 people in the room (including myself). So quiet and no body sat behind me to kick my seat, clean floor and fresh popcorn. I watched a 3D movie and I only paid ~$11.95, what a steal (compared to other theaters). This is another great theatre in Toronto. They have really made some great changes lately and I think they are still making more. They have a great patio to sit and people-watching on Queen Street, an arcade, great sandwiches, discount Tuesdays AND Wednesdays ($9.95 for ticket, popcorn & a drink or $4.95 for a ticket only), great people working there and they are always showing great big hollywood movies as soon as they come out. They even have the 3D movies that my kids just love ... a great place for the family. read more

I like this theatre - friendly staff and comfortable clean theatres. Just a note for people who have the prepaid tickets for Cineplex. They will accept them as a courtesy at this location, but treat them as "passes" so you can't use them for the no passes movies. I was a bit bummed since they aren't passes but actual tickets. Technically they don't have to accept them at all, but it was a bit frustrating trying to explain it was a prepaid ticket & not a pass. I'll still give the theatre 4 stars despite this mildly irritating experience. read more
