After spending a bit of time in Mississauga, practically by my workplace, I simulated my old route home. I used to backroad it home. First, it moves faster, especially during rush hour, than highway 401. Second, it's more interesting to take note of places that I may want to visit later. I was stopped at a set of lights that I am familiar with. I looked to my left and the Homebase Diner was gone. Allwyn's was now there. The location is perfect, as it's not far away from York University. For the past three weekends, I have bought a dozen patties. I was planning on breaking my streak. I sat there wondering if I should get a dozen. I went for it and moved into the left turn lane. Allwyn's is next door to a pho place that I have yet to visit, which has been there since I've been driving home from work along Steeles Avenue, both West and East. There was plenty of parking. I backed into a spot. I walked in. There were two other customers in there. I had a nice, efficient woman helping me out. I ordered a dozen beef patties. She asked whether I wanted them spicy or mild. I asked if I could get half of both, which is my usual order. Done! I paid with my debit card. The tap didn't work, so I had to insert it, enter my PIN, and it worked. I also added a tip. She also asked if it was okay to get cold patties. Yep. I had just downed a massive sandwich an hour ago, so I was in no mood to eat yet. I liked the weekend special on jerk chicken wings. I may need to return here on the weekends to give them a try. When my stomach is not full, I tend to order the oxtail on rice and peas. It's my favourite meal. Allwyn's does it well. The side coleslaw is excellent. I was listening to an older gentleman complain incessantly to a female staffer about the lack of rice and peas he was getting in his styrofoam containers. He pulled me into the conversation, which I was dreading. The rice and peas came up to the line on the styrofoam box before you get that flap to seal the deal. To me, it was plenty. Then again, I am more of a protein person, and would never get an order of rice and peas alone. He was complaining that he wasn't getting his money's worth for $5.50. He was strictly ordering rice and peas. Perhaps he was used to a heaping mound of starch in his box. The woman added what seemed to be the oxtail sauce on top. It was weird. I asked whether he got more at another Allwyn's location. He did. It all made sense now. If I were working there, I'd be turned off by the constant grumbling that this man was dishing out. The woman didn't say a thing, so her silence sort of fuelled his outrage. Luckily, my box of patties was ready. I thanked the woman and walked out with my goodies. I had a beef patty this morning. The problem was not knowing which patties were mild in the box and which were spicy. I picked the spicy one, which has two red dots on it. Allwyn's patties are different. They don't have that traditional patty look with crimping down the arc side. Each patty looks like a trapezoid (ah, that math minor finally comes handy at long last!), with minimal to non-existent crimping. The patty's exterior is more on the fluffy side. The filling is flavourful and delicious, although I always want more of it. The spiciness isn't overpowering, but it does have a mild burn with each bite. A dozen patties here is more expensive than most places. Before taxes, it's $21. I believe that prices have increased during this pandemic. It used to be well below $20. My patty phase continues thanks to visiting this eatery. They are yummy if you need your trapezoid patty fix. I can't wait to try the jerk chicken wings and hope that Mr Grumpy isn't there again. Food is good, kinda strange that each location has a different menu/food offering. And if that's the case the menus should reflect that

The food here accompanied me through the pandemic pretty much. I thought about it the other day, so I brought my mom back here to dine in. My mom really likes a Vietnamese pork chop, so I want to see if she would enjoy the Filipino charcoal-grilled version of it (she rarely had any Filipino food in her life). We ordered the BBQ grill platter with rice and four tacos to share since our visit was on a Tuesday. So, we actually didn't enjoy the tacos as much. The jerk chicken had an unexpected vinegar flavour (it was more like a chicken adobo), and the other chicken was served as popcorn chicken with spicy mayo. I was not the biggest fan, I have to say. The fish and beef tacos were better than the chicken ones, but there was nothing too special about them. The grilled platter was the hit, though--to me, grilled meat and dishes are always the signature of limitless. The meats were full of charcoal flavour. The pork chop & the skrewers were lean yet fragrant without being overly greasy (like many other restaurants). They went super well with rice. I was hoping that they would serve the raisin coleslaw tho--those were great back then, lol. I bet the Kamayan feast at Limitless would be worth a try. I'll come back with my gang of kuyas another day

Smoked & Smashed - Pulled Pork Sandwich

I miss the McRib!…read more I'm not a fan of poutine meaning I have not had one I absolutely wanted to have again. But dam, putting this smoked meat over poutine makes it the best ever! There is so much smokey, but not overpowering flavor, in the brisket I found myself eating this with the cold fries later in the day and it was still awesome. Eating cold fries is definitely not something I generally do or say but this smoked brisket was that great. Finally this portion was enough for a meal. Smoked and Smashed's rendition of the McRib sandwich is not spot on, it's better! Tender real pork rib meat, not processed molded, with the bones removed, thinly sliced pickles and fresh sliced onions layered on top with the most perfect tangy BBQ sauce. I wish I had brought back a few of these back with me to the states. These need to be available on GoldBelly! Get here as early as you can because the secret is definitely out and they are selling out before lunch service is done. I did overhear staff saying they are upping production, hopefully there is no degradation in quality. There is absolutely no room to sit inside but there are outdoor picnic tables nearby.

We also had the Reuben and a Brisket poutine. The poutine and rib sandwich were our favourites. Was a little on the pricey side but quality was good. Lots of seating and cool vibes (love the Anthony Bourdain poster) with 90s hip hop music playing. We ordered on the self service machine and they called us to the counter to pick up the food when ready.

This location had A LOT going on…read more Many drunk single dudes sitting with pitchers alone trying to talk to you while you eat. The servers were friendly and I understand they have to entertain it to earn their living but I should not have to be harassed in the process. Our server forgot items and did not punch them in the POS so we never got it. Luckily it was not on the bill. The special for the AYCE boneless wings is not worth it. They are heavily bread and fatty with uneven coats of batter. Not much meat on them. I still always enjoy the beer prices. I came to this location since it was there but I'll keep going to my main location outside Canada wonderland moving forward. Much cleaner location there.. and the workers have never forgotten my order.

(Eating experiences before or after crossing the international border between the State of New York…read moreand Canada - 2 of 2) I needed to eat and this place - St. Louis Bar and Grill - was in close proximity and among the few open late. I saw what they have to offer front and center and it's neither the product nor the ambiance I seek: ribs, wings, a loud sports bar with big TVs everywhere, and alcohol, thus perfect for backslappers. I figured they would have something I might like to eat. Before walking over to St. Louis Bar and Grill, I had spotted fish and chips on-line. I went in, the look was true to form to what I was expecting, and was greeted and seated right away. The big TVs do dominate the locale and deal with the local religion - hockey. The resto-bar was clean. A menu was brought over quickly. The server immediately made me aware of the nightly specials. It changed what I would order. I appreciated that. I settled on a burger platter, to which I added cheese. With it, I had a root beer. (The special that night was the burger platter and one could have it with their lower cost domestic beers, or something without alcohol.) Rounding out the platter was a nice serving of fries ... the kind with the ridges ... and they were good. The platter took a while to come to the table. However, given how good it was, this didn't matter. They got it right. The final tab was to my liking. I added a tip to reflect how welcoming and good natured the service was. Note that, even though later hours are kept, the kitchen closes a little earlier. Not knowing the landscape, it then became apparent that St. Louis Bar and Grill is a chain, albeit a sports bar that would, in my opinion, channel wings and ribs from places in the U.S. Lastly, it's less than 2 large blocks from the terminus station of TTC Line 1 up at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

Ambiance is casual, interior is clean, and service is fast and attentive. We ordered a couple of dishes and they all came out relatively quickly. The banchan (small side dishes) are refillable once only. My favourite banchan of the day were the bean sprouts and eggplant. There were lots of vegetarian and vegan options, such as the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings, Vegetables Bibimbap, Mushrooms Bibimbap, Vegetables Udon, Vegetables Fried Rice, Kimchi Pancake, Soondubu-jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew) in different variations, and more. The menu was pretty extensive, covering the most typical Korean dishes from the stews and grilled items, to a few Korean-Chinese dishes (such as Jajangmyeon) and everything in between. Steamed Vegetables Dumplings were quite small individually, but came in a sizeable portion. I liked the green onion garnish. Taste-wise, they were alright. Vegetables Bibimbap was excellent - good amount of mixed vegetables (spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, carrot strips, lettuce, bean sprouts) and the fried egg was perfectly crispy on the outer edges, with a still gooey and runny yolk. Grilled Croaker was also decent. It had a lot of small bones as it was a whole fish. It came served with purple rice, and we chose to add on extra lettuce. Seafood Knife Cut Noodles came in a big portion - with lots of slippery, thick udon noodles, pieces of seafood (mussels, clams, squid, shrimps, octopus), and a little big of vegetables (zucchini, carrot, onion). They came in a nice seafood-infused broth - perfect for a cold winter day. I'd come again for the variety of menu items they offer (especially the wide selection of vegetarian options), satisfying tastes, and great & efficient service.
