Hongdae is a family-owned restaurant serving classic Korean meals rather than Korean BBQ. What impressed me most was how balanced everything tasted. I often find Korean food too salty or spicy, but the dishes here were flavorful without being overwhelming. The portions were generous. My pork bone soup was not too spicy, and the pork spine had plenty of meat. The ginseng chicken soup included a whole spring chicken, the shrimp fried rice had lots of shrimp, and the seafood pancake contained more filling than batter. The dining room is spacious and comfortable, and even the washroom was very clean. It is a solid choice in Richmond Hill for a family dinner or a meetup with friends.
A cosy little Korean restaurant that's perfect on a rainy day. Service was adequate and friendly, and they had a really extensive menu. Bear in mind that when you do come here, the side dishes are limited to two free rounds. The main dishes however are large enough portions that you will probably need to take them home. I got the seafood jeon and it was very delicious. I most likely will come back to try some noodle dishes!
Came by recently and there was construction right at entrance but the front door is still easily accessible. Got the bossam to share and a meal combo (kimchi stew with grilled mackerel). The bossam was so good. Great portion and taste. The fish was grilled nicely. Will be back!
Lovely little authentic Korean restaurant by Yonge & 16th. The restaurant is a good size, staff are very friendly and efficient. I also loved that they refill your banchan if they notice that you have eaten it all. I ordered the cold noodles as it was a hot day outside and it did not disappoint. The soup was extremely refreshing and well seasoned. The noodles still had a good chew to it. Wish that this dish came with more protein but the pickled toppings it had were delicious. Would recommend checking out this place for some good Korean food!
Hongdae serves authentic Korean dishes that are the ultimate comfort foods - from the bibimbap and mandu (dumplings) to noodle dishes, everything here is excellent. Ambiance is casual, interior is clean, and service is fast and attentive. We ordered a couple of dishes and they all came out relatively quickly. The banchan (small side dishes) are refillable once only. My favourite banchan of the day were the bean sprouts and eggplant. There were lots of vegetarian and vegan options, such as the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings, Vegetables Bibimbap, Mushrooms Bibimbap, Vegetables Udon, Vegetables Fried Rice, Kimchi Pancake, Soondubu-jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew) in different variations, and more. The menu was pretty extensive, covering the most typical Korean dishes from the stews and grilled items, to a few Korean-Chinese dishes (such as Jajangmyeon) and everything in between. Steamed Vegetables Dumplings were quite small individually, but came in a sizeable portion. I liked the green onion garnish. Taste-wise, they were alright. Vegetables Bibimbap was excellent - good amount of mixed vegetables (spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, carrot strips, lettuce, bean sprouts) and the fried egg was perfectly crispy on the outer edges, with a still gooey and runny yolk. Grilled Croaker was also decent. It had a lot of small bones as it was a whole fish. It came served with purple rice, and we chose to add on extra lettuce. Seafood Knife Cut Noodles came in a big portion - with lots of slippery, thick udon noodles, pieces of seafood (mussels, clams, squid, shrimps, octopus), and a little big of vegetables (zucchini, carrot, onion). They came in a nice seafood-infused broth - perfect for a cold winter day. I'd come again for the variety of menu items they offer (especially the wide selection of vegetarian options), satisfying tastes, and great & efficient service.
Nice spot for Korean food. We ordered the Pork Bone Hot Pot - the soup base was flavorful, and the pork was tender. They also refilled the soup base for free when it ran low. One pot can easily feed 3 people. The complimentary appetizers were tasty too - I liked the marinated potatoes the most. Service was nice. The place is a bit small compared to other Korean restaurants in the area, but pretty tidy. Very busy when we got there 7ish on a Monday. All our food had so much flavour... I had the tofu seafood stew with the grilled croaker fish. Mwah it was amaizing! Service was a bit slower, however they were very busy... the food came fast once ordered :)
First time visiting this restaurant. We went early so it wasn't busy. We had the Hongdae Combo: Beef bulgogi - good. Meat was tender and had good seasoning Grilled Mackerel - just OK. A bit dry. Kimchi stew - Good. Not too hot Sides were good enough Pork Katsu - meat was moist. Enjoyable. Cheese Tteokbokki - 1st time having this dish. This was quite good. I would have this again. Bulgogi Bibimbop - Good. $1.99 for a fried egg! Service wasn't attentive. Other than them bringing the food, we had no other contact.
After a long day of driving we were craving Korean food for dinner. We stopped by Hongdae around 8pm on the weekend and it was busy. It took about 15 minute wait till our table was ready. There was a lot of variety on the menu and so many good choices, but ww finally ordered the short rib bibimbap and bulgogi. Both were really tasty! Service was efficient as well. Would come back again to try other items!
The parking lot is a good size and there were plenty of tables. Got the bibimbap and found it really enjoyable. It came piping hot so I ate it slowly and the portions were decent. I was able to mix in the sauce as much as I wanted to and ate them with the banchan. The banchan were all amazing but were not unlimited.
If there's one thing you should order from Hongdae, it's the spicy seafood noodle soup. I think the Korean term is jjamppong. My fiancée and I have been here a couple of times - recently, it's been getting busier. If you see people waiting around, make sure to find the waitlist sheet and put down your contact details! Don't be deterred though, the wait typically isn't too long as they clear tables out quickly. As mentioned, our favourite is the noodles. It's a super spicy soup base, filled with a generous portion of seafood (shrimp, mussels, squid). We always think the spice isn't bad from our initial slurps, only to die ever so slightly, near the end of the meal. The noodles have never been overcooked when we order it, so we think it's safe to say the consistency is here to stay. On the flip side, the soup is slightly overseasoned but not unbearable. I'll warn you now though - if you're wearing light-coloured clothing, cover up before you start chowing down. The red broth may stain. During our most recent visit, we also ordered the chicken katsu and the seafood pancake. The chicken portion size was massive and surprisingly fried quite nicely. Crispy but not oily. Dry batter, but not dry meat. Purple rice is always a plus. The seafood pancake also came out in a big portion, but we were less impressed with this one. Too much batter, not enough seafood. Banchans are great, especially the kimchi dishes. Spicy, salty, and not over-fermented. Yummy yummy. I always ask for a second helping, within reason. Hongdae also offers some larger combo meals + stews. We've never had the table large enough to share, but it's definitely on our list sometime.

We had Beef Bulgogi from the grilled bbq section, and Stone Pot Bibimbap Bulgogi. Both were served sizzling hot, nicely prepared and served. The beef were tender and delicious. The accompanying assortment were quite good and fresh. Parking is moderately easy to find in the plaza.
Came here again with my family on a Friday night, we ordered a family combo this time. Food portion is huge - this fits 4 adults! It comes with 5 banchans, 4 purple rice, gamjatang, sweet and sour/ spicy tangsukyuk, bulgogi and seafood pancake. Food came quick and they taste good, but maybe because there are too many customers there is no service. We pretty much need to grab our own takeout box and paid outside, literally like there is no service at all. As a result, I deduct a star for this.
Service was good and food was delicious. We got fried rice and bulgogi, overall it was yummy! We got here at 5pm on a Sunday. It was only a couple of tables that had customers. Shortly after, the whole place got so packed! So I guess that's something to watch out for in terms of timing. I specifically preferred this place because of the location and good parking spot. Spicy Stir-Fried Squid and Pork Belly I could hear the wok going absolutely crazy in the kitchen, so my expectations were high before the dish even arrived. It came out sizzling on the hot plate, with the oil still crackling. The pork belly was thick-cut but perfectly sized for one bite. The real surprise, though, was the squid. It had that firm, springy chew you get from grilled squid, but the flesh was also surprisingly thick and substantial. It felt like an indestructible little fighter that just wouldn't give up. Every bite turned into a tiny tug-of-war between my teeth and the squid, and I genuinely loved the texture. The shredded onion, zucchini, and carrot each added a different texture, with the zucchini especially helping cut through the richness. Almost every chopstickful had some meat plus two or three strips of vegetables. The ratio was pretty much perfect. It is on the expensive side, though. I checked Jindallae afterward and a similar dish there is around $22, making this one roughly 30% more expensive. A little disappointed that I didn't get the eggplant banchan I'd heard so much about. The side dishes I did get were simple and very home-style in their seasoning. read more

Came last night after evening spent with the kiddos. The front of the restaurant outside they are doing something with the cement, so be careful. I saw this place had good reviews and wanted to try it since we were out this end. We ordered sweet and sour pork, black bean noodles, beef stew and seafood pancake. The staff was quite busy and sometimes hard to get their attention, our waiter was writing our order on napkins. Did they run out of notepads? Our side dishes came with our food and it wasn't too spectacular. The food was good and hot, but I've had better Korean food. Overall, I feel this place is good, but pricer end. Our 4 dishes with 10% cash discount was $85 before tip. Just the japchae alone is $27.99! Anyways, I think I would try other restaurants if I am in this area due to prices and service. read more

Nice korean restaurant offering variety dishes. We got the Spicy Pork Bibimbap, Seafood pancake, Japchae. The spicy pork bibimbap was super yummy and flavourful. The portion was great and the stone bowl made the rice super crispy Japchae portion was huge but a bit too peppery for my likey and could use more flavour. The seafood was good but nothing special. The side dishes were super yummy. The service was nice but nothing special as he didn't really check up on us. Ambiance is casual with lots of tables! They have lots of pictures of the menu, so if you're visual person this is super perfect! They had a TV playing kpop on youtube. read more

Met up with a friend for dinner at this place she recommended. Not a big restaurant and it gets busy fast. There was parking out front and around the side but the parking lot is not very big and I can see it getting filled up around the dinner time rush. To share we ordered the steamed dumplings and had the complementary Korean side dishes to start. I liked the dumlpings, they were small and delicate. You can tell that it were home made. The Korean sides were ok, I had better They gave us kim chi, spicy cucumbers, konjuh cakes, and eggplant. For my main I ordered my go to, Spicy pork Bimbimbap in a stone bowl. I liked it, one of the better ones I had. The rice was very crispy on the bottom. The pork was a generous size and had good flavour. Overall experience was good, I wouldn't rush back but I enjoyed what I had. read more
We came here in a Wednesday night. It wasn't too busy and we sat down rather quickly. We ordered the bibimbap bulgogi, mackerel and pork bone soup. All the dishes were good / average. I didnt find the food amazing like all the other reviews however it was satisfactory. This would probably not be the top of my list for go to but it's a decent options. This was our first visit to Hongdae and we loved it! The casual dining room was smallish with about 20 tables (for 4) consisting of booths and regular tables. We shared the army stew jeongol which in my opinion was one of the best tasting version of the stew in the GTA. I would say this one was right up there with Insadong's army stew (Mississauga). The stew leaned stronger towards kimchi flavour which was a plus for my palette and all the ingredients bubbling away on our table was euphoric on a cold winter day. They use the thinner ramyun noodles which I liked and there were plenty of rice cake, kimchi, spam, bacon and veggies to satisfy 2 hungry patrons. The broth was so good, I ended up having way more than I really should have. Their banchan were all well prepared with their eggplant in a tangy sauce being the standout. The friendly server brought over a nice pot of tea so we didn't have to keep asking for more tea. Overall experience was such a good one and I wish Hongdae was closer to home. I will be back to try out their other offerings soon! read more
Went here for the first time with a friend. Was looking on yelp for good places to try. Ambiance - 4/5: small place, gets busy quickly during lunch, especially on weekends. There is 1 bathroom for female and 1 for male. The female one is wheelchair accessible. Service - 3.75/5: we were seated quickly. Their service was ok, slight language barrier but we were all able to understand each other. The food came out relatively quickly Food - 3/5: ordered the chicken stone pot bibimbab. It was surprisingly lacking in flavour despite adding in the available korean hot sauce. Usually most place would at least have seasame oil +/- salt in the food. They didn't have the widest selection of banchan. For someone that doesn't do well with spice, the banchan were not that spicy. Overall: 3.65/5 - I personally like Korean food. I might come back to try other menu items. There were other items that caught my eye but didn't feel hungry enough to try. read more
I initially wanted to order the naengmyeon with raw fish but that was not available so I got bibim naengmyeon. The spicy cold noodles was delicious, ingredients were fresh, sauce was spicy enough and the broth was packed with flavour. I enjoyed the amount of side dishes they gave us and they gave us a lot of it too! Super clean environment and lots of seating. read more

My family and I came here to treat my mom for mother's day. My mom and I got the beef soondubu and my siblings got the bugolgi bibimbap and bibimnaengmyeon. Honestly, the soondubu wasn't as tasty as other places I've had before. Visually, it looks rich and flavourful but I found myself searching for more flavours in the stew. There was a fair amount of beef but the beef itself didn't taste as if it were marinated. There was a good amount of tofu and green onions. I gave Hongdae a 4 star because they had amazing side dishes notably the potato was so tasty- best I've ever had. The service was pleasant as well. They have also a 5% cash discount. read more

Great Korean restaurant! We ordered the beef fried rice and bulgogi. Generous portion and the service was fast. Yummy side dishes. This spot is insanely busy weekends dinner time and they don't take reservations. Best to go for lunch if you don't want to wait an hour or more for a table. read more

we ordered steamed dumplings, tonkatsu and black bean noodles. The food was good. It was not extremely memorable but nothing bad to say either. The tonkatsu is a bit on the sweeter side. The service was quick. Their soups look phenomenal- I'll try it next time. You are served complimentary apps (picture included) and complimentary tea. If you're in Richmond Hill and craving korean food this is a good option. read more

Service is a 2/5. The usual lady with good service is not around today. hmmm.. let's say the service quality is questionable and the dining experience was not the same. I had a server who insisted on telling me she told me something is unavailable and ordered something in Korean for me instead. None of my table heard this explanation, maybe this is ok if the customers actually understands Korean? Food is a 4/5. The dishes that came were good. however, the dishes I love keeps disappearing from the menu. Very unfortunate that the rib hot pot is no longer on the menu, which I previously enjoyed thoroughly and gave a 5/5. Hope it can return in the future. Environment is clean, spacious and same as before. Will I return? It's a maybe for me, when service is improved in the future. I don't need to go to a restaurant, to have good food but feel bad to have come. read more

When you walk in you're greeted with friendly smiles and a homey and cozy feel. The menu is extensive with lots of options to choose from. We selected the Bulgogi Bimbimbap and the Pork bone stew. Both were delicious and made very well. I love all the pictures of the food on the wall! If you're like me who needs to see to know what to get, this place is perfect! read more
We first came here shortly after they opened. Came back after positive reviews from a friend. Menu is very different from the first visit. Gone are all the sticky notes blocking off unavailable items. Good selection of everything from stews to hotpot's. They also have a lunch menu. 6 items available from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm. At the low end is black bean noodles ($8.99) to the high end of $19.99 for the same noodles with sweet and sour pork. 4 choices for the advertised $13.99 price point...3 stews including Gam Ja Tang and a knife cut noodle. The knife cut noodle does not come with any protein but it was a decent portion and the broth was flavourful with a slightly peppery taste. Good second visit. We would definitely come back. read more

Comfort food is my go to food. And Korean comfort food is where you'll find me if I'm having one of those days! You know those days where you want to hide from the world because there were people you wanted to say "FOCUS" to! What does that mean? Well, if you know you know! Koreans are known for their BBQ and all that meat goodness, and also our numerous BahnChahn. We're also know for our piping hot, spicy, umami, deep broth, nutritious, stick to your rib, crazy good stews!!! Take deep breath here... I know that was a crazy run on-ish sentence. Remember the PBS-Rage. Yeah, Pork Bone Soup has been such a rage that the humble Gamjatang has gone from under $10 a bowl to a raging $15 to $19 bucks in a few short years! OMG!!! People... this was what I ate when I have a poor uni-student!!! LOL! Step inside Hongdae and gone is the Timmy Vibe that Hongdae replaced in this little strip mall. The place is much like a lot of old school Korean places. A mishmash of decor, handwritten signs on the wall, a menu that has markers and corrections and other modifications - ahhhhhh the familiarity of the good old days. Food was decent. The dumplings are the same as you would get from the frozen section of your local H-Mart, but for some reason, it always taste different at a restaurant. Go figure. The stew was a little lean on meat and potatoes. A decent amount but I would've like a heaping pile of meat stacked up like other places ... so much easier to take a photo. Overall, the food was ok. Wouldn't say it was the best I've had but certainly on the better side than some places I've been to. A 3.5-4 stars. Probably be back to try a few other items before a total thumbs up or down review. I kept driving by this place and finally decided to give it a try. The menu is quite large and covers all the common Korean dishes. It was a cold night so I decided to go with a pork bone soup. The food came out pretty quickly. There are 5 different types of side dishes that came with it. I was quite surprised as it was my first time seeing eggplant and bok choy, but they were really enjoyable! The kimchi was very good and not overly fermented. However, I felt my pork bone soup itself was a little lacking. The flavour was fairly weak and the bones barely had any meat on it. The potato is also very small. Did not feel like it was worth the price of it, especially considering that prices are a bit on the higher side. This place is fairly busy, almost a full house on Thursday night. However, I did feel like they were rushing me and my friend the whole time we were at the restaurant even though there wasn't anyone waiting for our table. Didn't even have time to finish looking at the menu before they tried to take our order, they never refilled our teapot, and I didn't even finish all my food before they asked how we wanted the bill. Overall, although the side dishes and kimchi was great, I'm not sure this place would be high on my list when the Korean food cravings hit. read more

The restaurant name sounds a bit like a Chinese restaurant, but Hongdae is in fact a newly opened Korean restaurant located near Hillcrest Mall where the Tim Hortons used to be. It's good to have another Korean option close to home. The food is decent, but unfortunately the price is a bit too high for my liking, even after taking inflation into consideration. The pork bone soup was solid and they were generous with the perilla seeds. The bones they used were of good quality, but you would be hard pressed to find a piece of potato. The edges of the seafood pancake was done well, but I wish the middle could be more crisp. Batter wise could be a bit more flavourful. It would be a bit bland if you don't dip it into the accompanied soy sauce. The jajangmyeon (black bean noodle) had a tasty sauce, but the noodle was way too soft. As for the ttebboki, they opted to use the thicker, shorter and stumpier rice cakes. If you like to be able to taste the rice flavour in your rice cakes, then you would prefer their version of it. The younger gentleman who was patrolling the dining room floor was also quite raw. I still find it weird how they have big portion of beef bulgogi on the menu. But when I asked them whether they offer a small portion of bulgogi served with rice, their response was yes, but the price was like $27. I'm not quite sure if it's the language barrier where he didn't understand my question or just like what I said up top, that their menu prices are just a bit rich for my blood. I forgot to mention about their side dishes. They were alright. But some of the dishes definitely is lighter on the flavour scale such as the bean sprout and the glass noodle. I'm just going to stick to tasty, yet economical Korean options going forward. read more
