We chose this bakery for our gender reveal cake. They made a beautiful cake and the service was great, but the cake was so bad that we couldn't even eat it. The icing tasted like it was made with crisco and the cake was crumbly. There was no flavor for either the icing or the cake. Absolutely delicious my son and I visited the downtown location and it was definitely a treat. Located at The Arcade building which is beautiful and full of locally owned small businesses. Perfect spot for a date or just a place to relax. The selection was outstanding. The service phenomenal. The attendant was so sweet and personable, which can be hard to find these days. So I bought a slice and it was the best carrot cake I've ever eaten. After working downtown in the Meridian building, I was familiar with the small Ally and Eloise shop tucked away in the Arcade building. That used to be my spot for coffee and pastries. However, what I didn't know, was they had an actual bake shop on Forest Drive. When scouring Yelp for a bakery to make my daughters 9th birthday cake, this familiar name popped up. I immediately went to their website and was taken aback at all of the delicious cakes they had available. I called and ordered the 9in Cookie Dough Cake a few days in advance, and the gentleman on the phone was very patient with me as I fumbled through ordering while driving. When I took my daughter to go pick it up, Ally was there putting the finishing touches on the cake. When she saw my daughter, she asked what else she could do to make it just right - to which she responded with wide eyes "sprinkles and my name in teal!" Ally ran to the back, did these two things, and brought it back out good to go! The cake was so tasty! They took actual scoops of cookie dough and mixed them with the batter, so it gave it a marbled texture. The 9in was definitely too large for our group, so everybody left home with 1 or 3 slices. They worked with him to add a last minute text addition to the cake and were able to put a very nice image of a uterus on the cake. So many people commented on the cake and wanted to know where he got it! We had a very unique situation and they were very accommodating and overall wonderful to work with. The cake is different than from other bakeries I have gotten cakes from in that it is a denser type of cake and less sweet. There is Plenty of cookie dough. The carrot cake was delicious with a good balance of goodies in the cake and great cream cheese frosting. I would definitely have this one again. The toasted coconut cake is delicate yellow cake with a rich buttercream and delicious toasted coconut. It was pretty simple. I was hoping for a bit more uniqueness or more coconut on the inside. I was really hoping this experience was going to knock me out of the park. Well unfortunately it didn't even come close. The two stars are for their ability to accommodate me so quickly. That's strictly it. However, I wish I had just missed the deadline for the day I needed to have a cake purchased by therefore I would have missed wasting my time and money at this place. Many people reviewed this place to be so god so when I came across them in a last minute bind and they were able to make me what I needed (A small red velvet cake with cream cheese icing) in a one day turn around. Online it said it would $35 but when I called the young lady said it would be $50. This is a 6 inch cake, BUT I was happy to pay $50 like I said due to their ability to get it to me so quickly. While I was in line waiting to pick up a girl came in raving about the pace and bought about 20 different things in the pastry holder. This only amplified my excitement. Then payment time... Now all of the sudden my bill is $55. Sure its only $5 more but still not what we agreed on the day prior, well no complaints from me on it just yet correct because they did me a solid and the cake looked really good. Birthday celebration comes a day later, cake has properly dethawed and its time to dig in..... what a disappointment. No taste. Spongey texture. Buttercream icing on the outside didn't even taste like sugar or vanilla. When I say we were all highly disappointed, know this, the birthday girl and an 8 year old guest weren't even interested in 'kindly' finishing their slice. Perhaps this was a one time mistake but something tells me I'm not the only person who has tried this shop in hopes by the chatter of it that was disappointed. Perhaps those of us uninterested have too clever of a pallet because I would equate this to a typical (excuse my stereotype but when I use it you will know exactly what I mean) "basic white girl" bakery. Probably so hyped because their treats do look pretty so I am sure IG is padded with pics of their work. Anyway, would I suggest this place.... no. I'm giving a three star because I've only had one item from the bakeshop, so I don't want to discount the other items they have without trying them. The rest of the stuff looked tasty. If this review was just about the macarons... It would be one star. I have eaten a lot of macarons from many different shops, etc. I also make them when I have time. This is NOT how macarons should be. Like, in any way shape or form. They are very messy looking. When I saw them, I was unimpressed with the appearance, BUT decided to give them a try anyway because sometimes messy can still be delicious. Unfortunately, they were not good. There wasn't enough filling, the cookies were hollow and WAY too big. It looked as if the almond flour and powdered sugar was not sifted enough before making the batter because the cookie itself was lumpy and gritty. Anyway, I just wanted to warn those who are looking for macarons, this is not the place to stop. I will continue my macaron search in Columbia elsewhere. read more
