Aloha was recommended to me by Tuff Shed. I called June/Aloha and another contractor to remove an existing pad as well as 20 concrete pier remnants from a large old deck that had been removed. I was pleased with June's follow-up and felt he clearly wanted my business and to make me happy with the work. June visited the site, gave some good recommendations (suggesting slightly larger footprint for the concrete pad than the other contractor), discussing pad depth, reinforcement, etc. He explained an adjacent, smaller pad wasn't even (it's where I keep Firewood) and there would be a discrepancy b/c his was going to be flat. His guys came over with a small bobcat and hauled away the 20 deck piers, old pad and some ancillary concrete on day 1. On day 2 they poured the concrete with meticulous detail and precision - and I was beyond pleased with the quality of the work, the open communication, and obvious care they showed us as a customer. They cleaned up after they left and the pad was perfectly level. I will use June/Aloha Concrete for future projects without even calling another contractor. When you find one that's fair, caring and does exceptional work, it takes away the anxiety of working with contractors for an important project. June from Aloha Concrete is not an honest businessman. He played a subcontractor role for my backyard building's foundation, and other concrete features. He completed leveling and the building foundation for the contract I signed. On the day of final payment, in which a small flat cement path was to be poured, the scope and logistics of work was changed by the main contractor after I paid Aloha, per the contract. This made me very nervous, but June seemed cordial and responsible up to that point, and said he would return later, but there would be a modest up charge (was not specific). I already had check his contractor's license against complaints but found none, and online reviews were decent. A week later, after the other required work was completed, I could not get in contact with him by text or phone. I eventually contacted the primary contractor to complain. Then... surprise... I get a call from him promising to return. But after a few days.. still no communication. Again I called the primary contractor, and again June called only after the manager contacted him. But then he wanted over $2000 for such a small 4 x 6 door entrance, which actually I had already paid him for, and it was smaller than the original plan. He knew this was ridiculous, so I told him not to come back to my property. On top of all this, his 2 workers stole one of my shovels I had in the back yard. "Hello CLSB? June and his team just replaced a commercial driveway for me in Concord and I couldn't be happier. June was excellent at communicating with me the schedule before he arrived and during the job. There were a few unforeseen obstacles that popped up during the removal of the existing driveway, and he contacted me to explain different options of how to proceed. I felt in the loop every step of the way. The obstacles required added work, and where other contractors may charge a bunch of money and take advantage of the situation, June didn't. He charged just for the time and materials needed to proceed. After they had prepped the site prior to the pour the next day, I had my trusted general contractor come and take a look at their work. He was very impressed at the quality and price. The dirt was properly compacted, the rebar was tied at correct intervals and doweled into adjacent slabs as we had discussed. This driveway was a little tricky with a rolling slope on just one side, and everything was property prepared for the pour. The next day the pour went very well, June and his team of skilled finishers did an excellent job. Blunder by a Grand Master Yep, For a curved upslope driveway: They did a lot of good work, mostly great at a fair price, except they punctured my main water line (near disaster) and used 2x4 forms and called that 4 inches thick. 2x4 forms are barely 3.5 inches. The slab came out at 3.6-3.7 inches. The good: Fast! Likable, hard workers, demo'ed large driveway and removed concrete debris, delivered set and compacted 3 inch rock base, installed and dobied and wired rebar exceeding spacing requirements, saw cut asphalt at street, formed curved downslope driveway, kept all leaves out of pour ( ! ) , were careful with the roots of one old oak tree, did a great pour with onsite mix (not ready mix, better), carefully formed lots of joints and finished with a troweled border and broomed center, and applied a curing agent. It looks good, with good comments from neighbors. Price in the end was fair. No cracks yet though we provided plenty of control joints for that. The bad: Demolition subcontractor, a relative, showed up 5 hours late, lied about it, and compounded his error by working fast and carelessly, puncturing the main water line even though it had been carefully marked and identified. I suppose the sub was unhappy with me as I turned down his entreaties for extra work as we needed to beat the fall leaf drop. Worse both the sub and June, the contractor, expertly and with experience, blamed me the homeowner for not having the water pipe buried deeply enough. (50 year old copper pipe, otherwise in good shape, not buried to modern code.) They had busted old water lines before and were expert at blaming the homeowner. ( ! ) They did work hard to repair the flood and I chose to pay for an emergency repair by a plumber as soldering cold wet copper joints is tricky even for plumbers, let alone concrete contractors. And I did not want to fight them over the extra money. Perhaps worse, concrete thickness came up short at barely 3.6 inches even though 4 inches was promised in the contract. They simply do not have forms for 4 in concrete. (They short on thickness of placed concrete to make their profit goal. Maybe one spot out there is 4 inch thick but mostly what they did on concrete is on the thin side. To be fair, what they did on the sub base was plenty thick enough.) They left a bit of a mess, with some concrete bits in surprising places. Their speed, availability, price, quality and the fact that they got out of my hair fast (speed again), overcomes my sour taste with the water pipe damage and concrete thickness short fall, and as I was quite happy to see them go, overall I think they did A-OK. read more
