Miguel did a large retaining wall and drainage job in my yard in Lafayette. I was going to go with cinder block but Miguel suggested I use natural moss rocks. He went to the mountains and picked out the rocks himself, and they were delivered in 6 truck loads. He did extensive grading and moving and it came out wonderful, like something from a national park. It has been several years with big rains and all the drainage worked perfectly. I owe this review since no storm happens until lately. This is the best local licensed landscaper in the area. Maverick who is the business owner with a sharp intelligent brain to help customers resolve landscaping issues. I had flooding in my back yard by the storage where drainage was missing. Checked with many licensed companies with professional; none of them could resolve issues and made all ridiculous estimates. Finally found Fernandez and sons, Maverick stated clear about plans to resolve issues by cutting inches of concrete and installed 3 drains. Maverick's estimate was amazingly affordable with the best materials like replacing concrete back on. The work team were professional, punctual, and Maverick did what he promised and the most important is no more flooding during storms. This licensed company is trustworthy and eased my landscaping concern. If I could give more than only 5 stars, I would. They earn my business. read more

We could not be happier with the results of our large exterior remodeling project with Fernandez & Sons Landscaping and are already enjoying our new outdoor space very much. The Fernandez team installed over 2,000 sq ft of pavers, a covered pavilion with grill island, sunken circular entertainment area, flagstone path, and space for an above ground spa. They also replaced a long wooden retaining wall with a keystone wall. The project included construction of a natural gas fire pit and installation of gas heaters, a significant amount of exterior lighting and electrical outlets, new plants and trees, drip irrigation, and a full drainage system. We also updated the landscaping in our front yard, which was a less involved project with no hardscape. The work that Fernandez did was of the highest quality. Miguel, Maverick, and their team have great attention to detail and take great pride in their work. There were a few times that they decided on their own to re-do something, knowing that we would be happier with the result. Their work with stone is particularly impressive. This includes pavers, the keystone wall, and Juan's intricate stonework on our pavilion columns, grill island, fire pit, and sunken circle - real works of art. We also appreciated working with such honest people. We chose Fernandez over other contractors largely because they seemed very trustworthy, and we were not worried (as we were with other contractors) that there would be a lot of "surprise" upcharges over the course of our project. Working with Fernandez & Sons was a very interactive process, which we wanted because we started with a rough initial plan but most of the details had to come together along the way. They contributed their own ideas and incorporated ours. We leaned heavily on Miguel's experience and advice regarding design and materials. Miguel's son Maverick takes the lead role in communicating with customers - he knows a tremendous amount at a young age and has a bright future. Looking through the few negative reviews here, most are because of delays in getting back in touch after an initial contact. This is a small family company, so when they get busy, they don't have a large team that can take up the slack. To us, the fact that this is a small family business was a positive, not a negative. We always knew who we would be dealing with and who would be doing the work - no hand-offs to unnamed subcontractors that we had never met or approved. We've never had a problem getting in touch with Maverick or Miguel when necessary. Some of the work took longer to complete than originally estimated - which I could say about every contractor that we have ever worked with. Maverick and his team did an amazing job landscaping our backyard this past summer. We had previously received ridiculous quotes from other landscapers for doing just half of our backyard. When Maverick came in, he was extremely professional and polite. He understood our needs and budget, and then proceeded to recommend different solutions, all that would work for our home and family. At one point, we had some minor delays due to COVID and availability of products, and instead of simply waiting, he worked with us to find another solution. This was great because the added changes were even better than the original design and came at no cost to us. Lastly, when everything was done, Maverick personally stopped by to check in on how things were and also continues to message me from time to time for the same. Based on the reviews read, I called this company and spoke to Maverick's father. He showed me the samples of grasses they install. Picked one I liked, and he gave me the price based on the lawn size. He told me his son will be calling me to finalize the deal. It's almost a week now, and still no call even though he said Maverick will call "tomorrow." Well, you've heard of that saying tomorrow never ends. I'm glad I still haven't hired them. Can you imagine if the call is about a problem with the installation? I'll be at their mercy, and no one would like to be in that predicament. read more

After three meetings and even being provided project drawings by Maverick, he just stopped responding to texts, emails or phone calls. We were ready to move forward on this project. We had a good conversation, and I was ready to go with his company. Except, he never sent the contract. I reached out multiple times, and he never responded. Disappointing. I've given this company endless opportunities to do my dry stack rock retaining wall. They have failed to show up for scheduled meetings on two occasions, they don't return my calls or texts, and I'm tired of being ignored. All this AFTER I bought all the materials (at Maverick's specific instruction to buy larger rocks) and have had them sitting at my house for literally 6-months. After talking with Maverick, we chose to do some of the excavation ourselves, which Maverick said he would stop by and check out. Never happened. Gave him months to respond as we weren't in a huge rush, and I didn't want to be a bother. Finally got ahold of him 6-7 weeks ago and he said he'd stop by the following Thursday. Never happened. I followed up with a text weeks later. No response. If anyone is reading this and has another company they can recommend, let me know. We're a patient and chill bunch at my house, but to ignore a customer for months is the height of unprofessionalism, and we're very disappointed. read more

Probably my favorite company I've worked with! They did about 2,500 sq ft of pavers at out house here in Walnut Creek and let me tell you, it was far the best experience I've ever in counter! Since the start they had us involved in everything, taking us to the brickyard in concord to choose a paver and they even showed me how to install pavers! We hired Miguel and Maverick to replace and install new irrigation, landscaping borders, and sod in our backyard. What we thought was going to be a great experience turned out to be a NIGHTMARE. The first 10 days went fine except there was a lack of communication on when they would actually show up and do the work, but overall seemed like decent work. However, on the "last day" they were supposed to work and install sod, everything changed. My mom was at our house since we had to have an electrician come out and get power to the outside and Miguel was incredible rude to my mom. There was a huge miscommunication about the price of the electrical work (his subcontractor). The cost went from $300 to $600 without us being informed. He blamed it all on my mom (who has dealt with probably hundreds of contractors); who simply asked if it was possible to get 4 outlets instead of 2. She never said go ahead with it. When I called Miguel to ask what was going on, he constantly talked over me, told me I didn't understand "how business worked" and was overall incredibly rude to me. Then the saga continued the next day (Saturday), he came by when we weren't home to fix things that should have already been addressed and then sent us a text message (half in Spanish) about all the extra things we had asked for. However, he had never communicated the costs of these items (he had communicated other costs). When we spoke on the phone with him and asked why he hadn't informed us for these costs, he got irritated with us, talked over us, and ultimately was rude again. The issues still were not fixed on Saturday so after a week of attempting to get him out to fix them and have yet another unpleasant phone call, he finally came out tonight after my husband sent him a text saying we were done. My husband met him in the hopes of having the job finished. When I arrived home, I walked into the backyard and all I said was "hi". He immediately started angrily telling me that "he was not happy with me" and that "he has kids and how could I yell at him." I never yelled - not once in any of the frustrating phone calls that we had with him. Miguel's behavior was incredibly unprofessional, disrespectful, and 100% uncalled for. Find someone else to help you with landscaping. They won't communicate with you and they will charge you extra and then blame it on you. This entire experience has been a nightmare. Do not hire this company for any reason. read more

I hired Miguel Fernandez and sons to pull weeds and cover the ground with mulch at my Mom's house so I could sell the property. Miguel's team cut the weeds instead of pulling and they sprayed the weeds with weed killer after I told him no spraying. He tried to tell me the weed spray was organic, but I'm sure that's a lie. I had to have his team come back three times because the cut weeds were poking up through the mulch. Also weed cloth I asked to be covered in mulch was still showing. On the last day, I asked they clean the dead weeds out of the mulch since there were no dead weeds before they cut them. He threatened to put a lien on the house and refused to have his workers clean up the dead weeds. He also hung up on me, sent me rude texts and constantly talked over me instead of listening to what I wanted. Never do business with Miguel Fernandez. He does not take pride in his work and he misrepresents the work he will do. read more
