Everyone has their favorite shave ice place, but unless they say it's the Aloha General Store, they are wrong! All kidding aside, this is my favorite place to get shave ice by far. I've been coming here for about ten years and it's the place I always bring guests when they come to visit. What makes their shave ice the best? I'll start with the base and work my way up. First, they use a solid, plastic cup. While I'm not totally in love with plastic waste, it's ridiculous to get shave ice in a paper cup that turns to mush seconds after getting it over the counter. Next, the ice cream. This is good enough to eat on it's own, but paired with shave ice, it makes a heavenly match. I usually end up getting vanilla, but you can't go wrong with any of their amazingly creamy and delicious flavors. Of course, the ice. It's shaved so finely that it seems like a puff of air would blow it all away. Say goodbye to crunchy snowcone ice and hello to perfectly shaved layers. Then comes the flavoring. Since they chill their syrups that are made from real cane sugar, you don't have to worry about your ice melting into nothing from the first pour of the flavorings. Blue vanilla has been my long-time favorite, but like with the ice cream, you can't really go wrong with any of the flavors. You can get toppings to complete your magnificent creation, like a snow cap. I like mine plain, but they've got fresh, creamy condensed milk if that's your style. I'm finding it pretty hard to believe that any other shaved ice place in Oahu could beat the ones made at Aloha General Store! Yes its a store that contains fun trinkets and souvenirs, but it also has over 20 flavors you can put on your shaved ice along with about 10 different flavors of their homemade ice cream. We decided to go for a specialty so we shared their "famous pineapple bowl" - its a bowl with one scoop of Dave's homemade vanilla ice cream, pineapple shaved ice, fresh crushed pineapple, whipped cream, tropical sweet cream, and topped with a cherry. This was sooo good! The shaved ice was extremely fine (not crunchy) and it melted slooowly so you didn't have to rush while eating. The vanilla ice cream was unbelievable and the pineapple flavored syrup on the shaved ice had just the right amount of sweetness. Some reasons why you must try Aloha's shaved ice: 1. they freeze their ice on-site daily and they're never older than 18-24 hours old. 2. they use pure cane sugar for their shaved ice flavors and the syrup is 30-40% less sugary than other places, which they claim enhances the natural fruit flavors of the syrup and does not give it an artificial taste - I believe it! 3. they do something to the ice so that it doesn't melt immediately like most other shaved ice places. And he is s correct! The inside was chocolate ice cream and it was the most chocolatey tasting ice cream we've ever had. As a local, I grew up on Matsumotos shave ice. Tried and true Matsumotos was always a staple, and at their old location, even though they were busy, their line never deterred us from making a stop there. ALL THAT HAS CHANGED Haleiwa's up-and-coming marketplace concept of a shopping center where Matsumotos is located has become a mecca for tourists and locals alike. My family, being the hermit crabs we are, prefer the off-the-beaten path, less trekked hole in the wall spots like Aloha General Store. AGS is located in the same shopping center as Cholos, and if you blink you'll miss it on Kam Hwy. Every time we've been here we've been impressed with the service, the product, and most importantly the lack of line! Their shave ice is comparable to Matsumotos, and I even prefer it because there is li hing powder at the end of the line that you can add to your hearts content. I noticed that the texture is very similar but the ice doesn't melt as fast as at the other competitors. The flavors are delicious, the owners work the counter and are super friendly and approachable. Even though its a 1-2 man show, they pump out shave ice pretty quickly! This was an unexpected pit-stop to stretch our legs after driving in from Kaneohe. We loved everything about this place. They have a really neat gift shop that overflows with cool little trinkets that are well made and worthy to buy! The best part about this place was hands down the shaved ice over ice cream. Our initial intention was to get smoothies here but when we got in line the smoothies didnt look all that so we opted for the shaved ice instead. They don't have a whole lot of different flavors like other places but what they had was good. They had li hing mui but no lemmon just lime. They had a shaker where you could add some li hing mui on the top after but it wasn't bursting with flavor kind but it was a good booster. The shaved ice was not bad either. I got The Works that included ice cream and a snow cap but no azuki beans. (idk why its called the works without the beans) The ice cream scoop is big. You have at least four bites to eat when you get to the bottom. Not like the other places where its so skoshi, its melted by the time you reach the bottom. Its right up there or better than Island Snow or Matsumoto's as far as fine consistency. They also chill their syrup so not to melt the shaved ice too much when applying it. I'm wondering if that was the owner of the store that rung us up but he saw we were local and gave us a kama'aina rate! Come on now! This is the only place that I've ever had shaved ice that did that. You won't find a find that at Matsumoto's, Island Snow, Shimizus, or Waiola unless they been doing it and we just never knew? I know its a touristy spot with all its trinkets and stuff but what place in Haleiwa isnt? Give it a try and decide for yourself and flash your HDL and get your discount. I am a shave ice snob for sure. There are only a few places that I actually enjoy eating shave ice. My friend and I had just finished two hikes and were definitely in need of something cold to refresh us. I am NOT a fan of Matsumoto's and on 4th of July, the line over there was over a block long! So of course I turned to Yelp for some other viable options to get shave ice. Aloha General Store popped up on the radar. They claimed that their shave ice was better than Matsumoto's. We figured why not check it out to see if this claim was true. We turned around and continued on our trek to find this establishment. I followed along on the map...looking at the blue dot that was me and making sure it followed along the path to get to the Yelp flag on the map. I love the maps on Yelp...makes it so easy to find places because you can see where you are in relation to the business. Aloha General Store is located in the North Shore Marketplace. It's kind of hidden (not facing the street), so don't lose hope trying to find it. If you're facing the marketplace, it's on the right side sort of in the back. One thing to note about this place is that you can get a buy one get one free with the Entertainment Card (gave an extra star just because of that). I have the app for the Entertainment Card, so that came in really handy. Basically, you get one shave ice free, but if you want additional goodies (like ice cream), then you have to pay extra for that. My friend and I basically got the same thing (just different flavors), but still ended up paying for the ice cream. Still a good deal, though. They also throw in the snow cap (condensed milk) with the ice cream (not an additional cost). They put the shave ice at the bottom...boo! You have to eat most of the shave ice on its own before you can share it with the ice cream. Definitely worth getting the ice cream because it's Dave's ice cream...nuff said! CASH ONLY! Make sure you have cash on hand to pay for your ice cold treat. My verdict? Personally, I don't enjoy any kind of shave ice that needs to be dug into. I expect my shave ice to be nice and fluffy. There are other shave ice places that I enjoy much more than Aloha General Store. However, if friends were in need of shave ice out on the North Shore side, I suppose this place would do...definitely beats the crowds at Matsumoto's! read more

The staff is always friendly and very polite, even to the most ignorant tourist.
