A local told us about this place on our last trip to Oahu, and it was so good that it was definitely on our list for this trip. We stopped by on our way back from a day at Yokohama Bay and weren't disappointed. We got spicy and shoyu bowls and nachos, and the fish was so fresh. The staff at this surf shop went above and beyond with their care for their customers. As we were renting kayaks and other gear, I got the impression that this surf shop is mainly used by locals who have a truck or vehicle to transport the rented gear where they want. We had over estimated our ability to walk the heavy kayak down to the beach and the owner was very kind to assist us by loading it in his vehicle, while at the beach he introduced us to the life guard because he was concerned as there were strong winds/currents that day, and he also came to check in on us and helped drive the kayak back. We were super grateful for the effort he put in because it truly was exceptional. The boogie boards and snorkel gear were good quality and easy to carry if you're going to a local beach. If you do want to rent the kayaks, just make sure you have the transportation figured out. When we returned we also had some shaved ice which was some of the best we had during this trip. Omg. I was having the worst day, and it was almost time to pick up my child from school nearby. I've been meaning to come here to pick up some Opae for the longest time to try it out. I came in here looking to just pick up the opae. I ended up seeing that they have shave ice and poke bowls. The laulau poke combo caught my eye. It was a bit expensive considering I was still going to get the opae, but with the day I was having...I said eff it. I made a huge mistake because it was so good. Not only did it turn my day all the way around, but it also made me want to come in here more EVERYDAY. What am I going to do now? I told my coworker I'm going to work here part-time so I can get a discount on the food if it's not free when I'm working. The poke was freshly made and of excellent quality. The laulau was also homemade and a bit small, but you can tell it was well thought out when it was put together. There was a nice piece of fat in there for flavor and a nice size piece of pork considering the size of the laulau as a whole. I don't like that I live nearby because of the temptation! Great job on the excellent setup. BTW. I noticed immediately when I walked in that it smelled nice inside the store. Random, i know. It wasn't the food I was smelling. Right nearby I saw Kainalu Surf Shop listed with Dave's Ice Cream for sale. PERFECT! Parking was plentiful at 2pm on a Monday in June the little shopping complex, and I popped in the shop and ordered 2 scoops: matcha green tea, and ube: It was only $3.50! We made a quick stop before the beach! Staff were all very friendly and patient. It was our first time so it did take us a while to decide on what we were all going to order lol. Hands down the best shave ice I've had. The ice is crazy soft, it's almost like cotton candy but better. They don't drown the shave ice in their syrup either! I love their shaved ice! I got the pina colada with a drizzle of condensed milk, topped with li hing and and vanilla ice cream on the bottom. It was so delicious!!!! This size is regular and it was a lot for just me, you can def share with someone else with the regular size. The shave ice texture is so smooth and plush, i personally prefer this texture over the typical chunks of small ice bits. Customer service was fast and friendly. Just had a pineapple and passionfruit shave ice from Kainalu Surf Shop and it was fluffy heaven! The stand is in a corner of the store. The syrup flavors are more limited than some of the other shave ice places, but the choice for ice cream flavors is much greater (although it does me no good since I always just order vanilla anyway). It took longer for the young man to make it than other places because the machine seemed to move slower, but the finely shaved ice was worth the wait. There were no chunks in any of it! The syrup was flavorful and covered the ice perfectly. The ice cream was pretty much in the exact middle of the mound, so I was able to scoop it up with each bite of the powdery snow. While your shave ice is being made, there are soft t-shirts, bathing suits, snorkeling gear, footwear, and other related items to look at (and perhaps purchase), so your wait doesn't seem long at all. Shave ice is perfect, ice is super smooth, flavors are delicious AND they have a keiki size so my little ones aren't bouncing off the walls afterwards.
