The set up for the competition was interesting. Open seating, and families were really territorial about seats, especially the ones that faced straight on. The sides were decent, but most of the performances faced one way. Debs and I got the stink eye when we walked up into the first section...it was all very funny! The emcees were great, although, I do wish the guy would stop bringing religion into the program. You can love God, but don't force it on others. The intermission entertainment, Vaughn Henry "Kealohamele" Claude Kalawa, were really good! So good, they inspired some of the patrons to go out on the floor and hula. It was great! There were retail and food vendors in the other hall. It reminded me of a very small Made in Hawaii festival. I got some tasty lumpia and pancit from Aloha & Mabuhay, although the son working the register didn't seem very happy to be there...LOL! I also got the garlic chicken and fried noodles from Lee's Waipio, and their Spam musubi was the best I have eaten in a long time. Mainland people just don't know how to do it. They were sold out of Tahiti Fete t-shirts and I was bummed, but when we were back in our seats, and the entertainment was done, one of the emcees announced there were 30 shirts available. The families, friends, fellow students, alumni all come out to support the men's volleyball team. We had a lot of fun learning when to "chee hoo!" When to yell "ROOF!" And just scream for UH. I'm glad I got to experience it! Now, getting out of the parking structure did take us a while, but it was all good! GO BOWS!!!!

The rules they implemented during graduation were simply not enforced either. No rubbish, strollers, carts, etc. The amount of people who broke the rules was ridiculous. Many of us followed the guidelines and that made attending graduation incredibly difficult (ex. carrying your babies due to no stroller). They should rereview how they handle graduation crowds and get the right amount of staff to enforce it.

There are many vendors to choose from when you are on the second floor concourse. I ordered summer rolls and Chicken from Olay's Thai and was completely satisfied! The service was okay. I felt like there were no ushers available in our section to help direct us to our seats. We also wanted to order Miller lite beer at first, but something was apparently wrong with the keg connected to their line at the time. Will def be back to get some Pogmosa and try a hotdog!

My husband and I went to the Mayjah Rayjah 2013 Concert last night. We had a great time. Even…read morethough we are on the 'mature side' and didnt know any of the artists. I wanted to do something totally different for our 28th Wedding Anniversary. We sat on the over 21 side (the alcoholics side) as they were affectionately known throughout the night . We chose this side only because it had a better angle to the stage. We got there really early but didnt need to really. We were first in line at the express entrance because we bought a Groupon for the concert.. There is really no need to arrive early and line up for hours we discovered unless you really really want to sit right down the front on the cement step near the stage. There is more than ample room to put your blanket down and relax and watch the show and the stage can be seen from anywhere. We sat on the first path half way up the hill just near the sound desk and it was perfect. By the end of the night though we had a lot of people standing on the path behind us but that didnt happen until about 11.30pm. I am a watcher and I watched the ample ample amount of security guards, no one seemed to be misbehaving even on the 'alcoholics side' and everyone was having a great time dancing and singing. You cannot repeat CANNOT take in anything other than a blanket. I bought 2 stadium seat thingys with the padded seat and back attached from Walmart for $18, they were well worth it as we sat on the grass for 7 hours and hardly got a 'numb bum'...... Each bag is checked thoroughly, every zipper was open and searched. Large backpacks are not allowed in and what was allowed in were completely searched as well. The drinks were overpriced, water, sodas were $3 each but the food was reasonable. 2 Hawaiian plates, rice with salad and chicken or chili franks were $8 each so not too bad. We didnt have any alcohol so not sure of the price, but previous yelpers say it was expensive. They were selling the large cans of Bud Light and looks like mixed drinks as well. Overall it was a fantastic night. If you dont want the noisy revelers sit on the under 21 family side but if you want an alcoholic drink you cant go back over till its all gone!

I was lucky enough to attend a Lei Day event at Waikiki Shell featuring live music and hula, and…read morethe setting could not have felt more perfect for it. The venue immediately reminded me a little of the Hollywood Bowl, but on a much smaller and somehow even more charming scale. With Diamond Head rising in the background, the views are absolutely spectacular and give the whole experience a distinctly Hawaiian sense of place. I was also impressed by how good the acoustics were, especially in an outdoor venue. It's very easy to access from the main Waikiki hotel area, which makes getting there surprisingly convenient. Between the music, the atmosphere, and the scenery, it ended up being one of those memorable Honolulu evenings that really sticks with you.

Honestly the last time that I've been back to the Waikiki Shell is my graduation o_O woah....though I could be wrong but sadly I don't get out very much but thanks to Nadine who asked if I was interested in a concert which I really was made me so happy to return and experience it all under the stars. Parking is always an issue but luckily we got there early...early enough to find one right away as it fills up quickly which you'll have to park at the next lot which can be a distance that we didn't want. What I wasn't prepared for was the wait as the time to enter was delayed by 30 minutes I did wished that I knew you could bring your own water just as long it's in a plastic bottle though there was lots of food options there it was spread out so far I wished there was just a single place to order but I was already exhausted from waiting that all I wanted to do was find our seats. Nadine selected great seats right in the center and close enough that we're able to see the concert well, bathrooms are at the front gate and I noticed there was another one on the opposite side as well, it's nice to have an open air atmosphere gave it a nice relaxing vibe. It was a small birthday celebration--just myself, the newly minted 9-year-old grandson, and his…read moremother. The admission to the museum was pricey, even for Kama'aina, so we opted to get the Family Membership instead. The membership was for 2 adults and up to 4 kids, and also has discounts for other exhibits. After a quick sweep through the museum, and a wary observation of the flight simulator, the grandson decided it was time to eat. I got the Blue Angels Burger and he got the kids hot dog meal. I'd say the prices were reasonable, considering how much takeout and restaurant food costs these days. The burger was fat as hell and the dog wasn't Costco sized but definitely satisfied the kid. I didn't get pics of the food because I was too enthralled over the size of the patty! We spent the day also visiting the Mighty Mo, the Virtual Reality tour, and gift shop shopping also.

In my opinion the Aviation Museum was one of the cooler stops on our trip. I really enjoyed all the different types of planes and carriers they had on display. We also ate Lunch at the Cafe in the Aviation Museum and the food was delicious! The bus picked us up from the USS Missouri and dropped us off at the Aviation Museum, there was a short line to check in at the front desk of the museum before you could enter the inside portion of the museum. They had a flight simulator inside the internal museum as well as a gift shop and restaurant. The Hangar still had the original bullet holes in the glass from the Pearl Harbor attack which was a really neat part of history to be able see. They also have a section where they are restoring some planes and helicopter parts. My favorite thing they had was this wood paneled plane in the hangar. They also had some old Military trucks out front of the hangar that were really cool. I highly recommend visiting the Aviation Museum while at Pearl Harbor.

HOWEVER, we did one lap around and ate some other food: TAKO4U: It was the first time I had Tako4U and we had the Yakisoba and the Most Valuable Chicken (aka MVC, which was Karaage Chicken) with the Honey Mustard mayo. I didn't get to try the Yakisoba, but the Karaage Chicken was really yummy. The mayo and karaage flavor didn't over power one another too much, so it was a nice balance that also maintained the crunchiness of the chicken. Additionally, I followed them on instagram and we got five free Takoyaki balls with the Yakisoba! The Takoyaki was definitely a bit bland, but still delightful nevertheless. ISLAND MANAPUA FACTORY: This vendor was also a first time for me, and I would say it was okay! I'm a HUGE fan of bao buns AND char siu, so I was really looking forward to trying their Char Siu bao buns, but it was alright! The bao bun itself was really good--quite fluffy and the perfect texture, but the char siu slices were unfortunately a bit too thick and it was cold and hard to chew. Next time, I'll try the chicken and duck, but I do think that the char siu slices should be a bit thinner! I will say that if you are wanting to try different bao buns, you are able to mix and match if you want, which I didn't know until after I ordered! THE AGUA BABE: Also another first for me, and it definitely was my favorite vendor of the three we tried today! We had the Lava Cloud, Lilikoi Dream, and Ube Paradise and ALL THREE were absolutely AMAZING! The drinks were light and such a perfect pair with any dinner/dish at the night market and their flavors were SO on point. The Lava Cloud was very coconut heavy while the Ube Paradise was mostly horchata, but with the perfect amount of Ube Poi drizzle to add a fun twist. I WILL be coming back to try all the other different flavors for sure! The vibe of the entire night market was so precious! The live music was awesome and the singers were pretty interactive with the crowd, and the family friendly vibe was awesome (there were a ton of kids having fun today which was such a fun sight to see). Not the biggest nor the most popular but one of the best for foodies…read more Huh? One, the market schedule is consistent. Every Saturday 17:00-21:00. Pearlridge. Old Sears parking lot. Two, it's not overly crowded, you will always find a seat in the large, covered eating area to enjoy your finds. Booze and live music a plus if you're into that. Three, the vendor list is not booked solid with regulars (ie What the Truck where you will see the same vendors event after event). This means lots of new, first time vendors or those from other parts of the Island who can't get a spot at the sold out, established markets. A reliable IG post of the exact vendors who will be at the Market the morning of allows preplanning; who to visit, what to eat, even if it's worth your time. Additionally, the price to be a vendor must be low meaning generous portions and reasonable prices (if you attend a lot of these events around the Island, you'll quickly learn when the price of participation is high, food quantity drops and prices are several dollars higher). Add a great layout with plenty of space, a handful of family friendly vendors, and onsite local kine friendly security and it's a solid experience. So yeah, not the biggest, nor the most popular but one of the best for foodies.
