    TUESDAY TACO TUESDAY
    Glenn G.

We've enjoyed the other locations of Alpaca we've visited but this one seemed a little cramped. They still have the same great chicken and other Peruvian dishes. I actually like their beef dish more than the chicken but I know it takes longer since I think they do those to order. Since we happened to stop by on a Tuesday, we got a taco special and a 1/4 white chicken dish with black beans and rice. Parking is a little tight but we found spaces in a strip mall around the corner. We had a special offer that was only good at this location, otherwise we'll stick to the Alpaca location closer to our home.

Arroz chaufa with side salad and caramel flan

I had an offline offer to use at this Alpaca location this month. I decided to order take-out and got thr arroz chaufa and caramel flan. The arroz chaufa was made to order and came with a side salad and 2 sauces, a yellow one and a green one. I think the yellow one is a mayo based sauce that is slightly sweet and the green one is a mild hot sauce. I only used a little bit of both but could easily eat the rice without any sauce. The caramel flan was delicious! There's only a few parking spots available but if it's full, there is a parking lot across the street.

It's been a long time since we have had Alpaca. It was such a treat to have them deliver to our neighborhood as part of Durham Delivers. We were able to easily place our order online, and pickup at our neighborhood clubhouse. All of the food was really tasty. I had 1/4 white chicken, yuca fries and tostones. I also got horchata. When my husband picked up our order they didn't give him the horchata, but they called me immediately to ask him to come right back. I really appreciate that they called me so quickly, and he was able to turn right around and pick it up! I had the yellow and green dipping sauces and my husband ordered the extra yellow and green dipping sauces. They all looked the same, so we weren't sure which was which, but they were all yummy regardless. It might be helpful to label the containers in the future with an X on the extra ones. Overall this was a great and easy takeout experience and we were thankful to have Alpaca come to our neighborhood. We will definitely order takeout again if this is offered, and we look forward to visiting in person when we are comfortable doing so.

This rating applies to the Alpaca restaurant on Davidson street. I love the food at Alpaca however this particular Alpaca restaurant has a "Dos Pollos" promotion, when you compare it to the regular menu the math shows they are upcharging you between $16-$26 for 2 liters of soda. ie you can get 3 whole chickens plus all the sides (but minus the 2 liters) for less than the dos pollos. This deal strikes me as predatory and dishonest

Come for the chicken, stay for the sauces and sides! The chicken has great flavor and isn't dry at all, service was fast and food was fresh tasting. The variety of sides are impressive. Lots of seating, but parking is a little tight at this location ( there's a lot across the street you can park in if needed).

Half chicken with corn and fried yuca fries

Bf and I were on our way to Atlanta and stopped in Durham for some lunch. We both love Peruvian chicken so we thought we would stop here and give it a try. We shared the half chicken with corn and fried yucca fries. The fries were 50 cents extra but the whole meal was about $10. The chicken has pretty good flavor on its own and it was super juicy. Very nicely cooked chicken! However, the sides didn't really wow me. We only got 6 pieces of yucca (I ate one before taking the picture). The sauces that we got were also underwhelming which was disappointing because I love smothering the meat in sauce for that EXTRA flavor. The place was very clean and service was pretty fast though you wait yourself. Nice place for a quick lunch break. I'd suggest if you like to eat your chicken with extra flavor and spice/hotness to bring some from home.

"Delicious 'Peruvian/ Salvadorean' rotisserie chicken" Like all the other reviewers, I've always liked this place for its rotisserie chicken. Also really like the sweet plantains. Green plantains and yucca fries also quite tasty. Price is super-cheap, even though the exterior is a little sketchy. Today, however, my daughter and I tried the "Traditional" options (picture uploaded): I had the "Aji de Gallina" (shredded chicken in a rich cream sauce over potatoes with hard boiled eggs) and she had the "Arroz Chaufa" (Mexican-style fried rice). Hers was pretty good- seemed like the same type of chicken but mixed into this fried rice creation. I wasn't actually crazy about mine- I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5. It had an almost "pasty" consistency (like from a blender) where you couldn't even really taste the chicken. This place is great for the great taste of its chicken- it wasn't so good losing its taste by diluting that far and basically made into a sauce. So, my advice: stick with the quarter or half-chicken rotisserie meals, and pass on the traditional options. I'll still give it 4 stars since I'm definitely still a fan of the rotisserie options.

Inside of Mami Nora's with basic counter service

If you're in the mood for bawk bawk chicken, you should definitely check out Mami Nora's in Durham! Don't let the simple exterior fool you, inside you'll get some delicious South American basics like roasted chicken, plantains, beans and yucca fries. I put down a 1/2 chicken plate with yucca fries and black beans with a drink for about $10. The chicken was quite good but a bit salty. The chicken's blistered skin covered tender, roasted chicken, pretty tasty. The black beans were excellent and the yucca fries were a bit more meaty than tater fries. Two chilled sauces (aji verde and aji amarillo sauce, I think) were provided to spice up the meal. Good food at good prices is what Mami Nora's is about. And while peruvian chicken is probably not my personal favorite, I really appreciate the ethnic authenticity of this place. I'm torn between 3 or 4 stars but what the heck, enjoy Mami Nora's for what it is!

I was in town for business and as in every location I travel to, I look for Peruvian food. This is in my top three. One was in Austin, TX, one in St Louis, MO and now this one in Durham, NC. I had the lunch special. It included a drink, soup and entree. Of course you have to drink Inca Cola (tastes like Squirt with Cream Soda) nice and cold. I'll have to get a Chicha Morada to take with me (which I did, and it was fruity and sweet, like a non-alcoholic sangria with cinnamon). The soup was a chicken and lentil soup with various veggies. As soon as I tasted it, I knew I was in for a treat and prayed the Aji de Gallina would be just as good. It was! Aji de Gallina is a shredded chicken dish made with Peruvian Aji amarillos, nuts, Parmesan cheese. Add in all the delicious spices Peru is known for and you have a wonderful, homey, delicious dish. I will be coming back tonight for dinner. Can't decide if I want the Seco de Res or the Lomo Saltado. Both staple dishes in Peru. Part 2 - so...I was too tired to go back for dinner. BUT, I did order in. I got the Papa à la Huancaina (so delicious, it tasted like I make at home). It is a creamy, Aji Amarillo cheese sauce over yellow potatoes. I would have liked it a little spicier, but I understand having to cater to the general public, so I'll let that slide. But the flavor was as good as you could get. I also opted to order the Seco since I thought it would travel better than the Lomo Saltado. The rice was perfect. Not soggy or spongy. Just right. Flavored with a little salt and garlic. You could eat it by itself. The Seco meat was tender. I didn't even use a knife to cut it. In fact, it pulled apart easily with a plastic fork. I would have liked a little more of the cilantro sauce to soak up in my rice. The flavors were right on, but I love cilantro...so. It even came with a Salsa Criolla (lightly pickled red onion), which is authentic and served with many Peruvian dishes. I ordered additional salsa amarillo just to taste. It's a sauce made with aji amarillo and black mint. I know it sounds weird but it's actually so tasty and fresh. My only disappointment were the beans not that they weren't good and flavorful, but they were pinto beans. I was really expecting mayacoba beans (similar to a white canary bean). Sorry, I ate it before thinking about taking pictures. All in all, I would rate this highly for those wanting to try authentic Peruvian food. My next visit to Durham I'll be trying the Ceviche and Lomo Saltado.

Came here after the Durham Farmers Market with a friend and wow this place was a surprise. …read more I went with the grain bowl and honestly it is one of the best I have had in downtown Durham. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. It is finished with a crunchy mix of pepitas, nuts, and grains. The balance is quite ideal in my view. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. The vibe inside is festive and relaxed, bright and open, and just a fun place to hang out for lunch. Porbably not a special occasion. I also suspect it could get loud when full. This is definitely going into my regular rotation. That grain bowl is going to be hard to pass up next time, so instead of replacing it I will probably just add a side or an empanada and start working my way through the rest of the menu.

I had two empanadas, with a side of black beans and rice, and their papas fritas and the portion size for the food surprised me. $25 worth of food was around two takeaway boxes full and enough for probably two people. They gave a large amount of fries coated with this tasty furikake seasoning. The sauce that came with the empanadas was very nice. "Wonderful roasted chicken near Durham South Square"…read more I've loved the other two Durham Alpaca locations for years, but somehow never noticed this one, tucked back beside Chuck E Cheeses at what I think used to be a Boston Market building many years ago (and across the street from Sam's Club & Target). I was very impressed at the large outdoor seating area with the string lights-- looked very modern and inviting. I ordered takeout online, so I was only inside for a moment, but the restaurant was very new and clean. They had the typical area on the side for condiments, including their famous spicy green and milder yellow sauces (and little cups with lids for takeout). I ordered a quarter-chicken dark (always delicious) along with fries and rice & beans. The rice & beans had a 50 cent extra fee. My wife got the quarter chicken dark with fries and maduros (fried sweet plantains). The food was ready when I arrived, and I was handed it as soon as I said my name upon arrival. It was packaged in nice plastic containers-- not so great environmentally but they did keep the heat in and maintained the food well on the drive home. Everything was delicious as always. The chicken is always SUPER moist and tender and scrumptious, made even more amazing with some green & yellow sauce. Their fries are moist and tasty, and the rice & beans had a good flavor. My wife was happy with her food too. The price is really good-- right around $10 for the quarter dark meal deals, before tax and tip. And it's a good portion size overall, too... enough that you're not hungry after, but it's not "over the top" huge. I've always been a big Alpaca fan, and I'm glad to see them spreading to other locations with the same excellent food and fast/ easy service. One tip-- if you order takeout, use their website, not commercial ones like Uber Eats or Grubhub, so you can save a little money. I'm sure I'll be back-- loved the look of that outdoor area!
