    Quarter chicken with Yuca Fries
    Kenny N.

Since moving to NC, I've seen several Alpaca locations and have been curious about the Peruvian Rotisserie Chickens. I stopped by one day for lunch and got their quarter chicken meal which comes with a quarter of a chicken (choice of dark or white meat) and two sides. I ended up getting fries and their yuca fries to compare. The yuca fries were an additional 50 cent upgrade, but definitely worthwhile. If I had to describe yuca fries, it would be a fluffy, almost golden potato fry texture. For the price I paid, I thought it was very reasonable for a generous portion. Be sure to grab the green and yellow sauce. The yellow sauce is almost like a tangy mayonnaise, while the green sauce reminds me of a very spicy aguacate sauce. Both pair really well when drizzled on the chicken. Pros: Fast, friendly service. Reasonable prices. Cons: Parking lot gets really dark at night since the area is not well-lit. But with plenty of open spots, there shouldn't be any issues finding parking.

Top Part of my LONG Receipt

This was my first time ordering from Alpaca Chicken. I had been curious to see what all the rave reviews were about. I do not live in Chapel Hill. I live about an hour and a half away, but whenever I have an appointment at UNC, I usually try one of the area's highly rated restaurants. After my doctor's appointment, I decided to place a large order so my family and I could try several menu items. I ordered Chop Chop, 22oz. Jarritos Mango drink, Arroz Chaufa, Green Beans, Lomo Saltado, Rice, Fries, Pollo Saltado, Chicken Soup, Two Half-Chicken, Green & Yellow Sauce, Two orders of Tres Leches Cake, and Flan. I placed the order at approximately 3:25 p.m., and the app notified me that it was ready at 3:45 p.m. I picked it up around 4:00 p.m. The restaurant did not appear to be very busy, so I trusted that the staff had checked my large order before handing me the bags. Unfortunately, when I arrived home, I discovered that some of my orders were missing. I called the Chapel Hill location and initially spoke with an employee who told me I could drive back to Chapel Hill to get the missing drinks. I explained that I live approximately an hour and a half away. Driving another three-hour round trip in an SUV and spending additional money on gas would not be reasonable as they should have been placed with my order in the first place. The employee apologized and said she could not issue a refund at all because she did not have access to the system and no manager was available. She told me that someone would call me back. I later received a call from someone named Lucia or Lucita, if I remember correctly. She explained that she could not process the refund at that moment because she was not at the restaurant, but she promised to take care of it the following day. I told her that was fine as long as she followed through and would not forget. It has now been a week, and I have not received the promised refund or any further communication. I am attaching a copy of the receipt that was attached to one of my food bags. The receipt appears to have been used as a packing checklist, with handwritten check marks beside many of the items. However, the drink listed on the receipt does not appear to have been checked off. Considering the size of this order, someone should have carefully checked the quantity and contents of every bag before handing them to me. The restaurant was not busy when I picked up the order, and the receipt provided a clear checklist that could have been used to catch the missing items. Mistakes can happen, and the missing drinks alone could have been easily resolved. What is most disappointing is that I was promised a refund and then received no follow-up. Good customer service requires honesty, accountability, and following through on commitments. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend the Chapel Hill location. _______________________ MY RESPONSE TO OWNER: As stated above, I have already reached out to the Chapel Hill location and explained the situation in detail. I agreed and trusted that she would keep her word. More than a week later, I still have not received the promised refund or any further communication. Your response now asks me to contact the restaurant again, even though I have already done exactly that and was promised a resolution. I should not have to repeatedly chase your business for a refund after your employees failed to include part of my paid order and then failed to honor their promise to correct it. The appropriate response would be for management to review the order, contact me directly using the information already associated with it, and process the promised refund. The responsibility to resolve this should not continue to be placed on the customer. Your public response also contains unfilled template language such as "contact_name" and "contact_title," which makes it appear that my review and the details I provided were not carefully read before the response was posted. I am still waiting for Alpaca Chicken to follow through and make this right.

"The rice and beans is super super good" - my 9 year old. Alpaca is one of the few spots in Chapel Hill where everyone gets a meal that they are happy with, including my super picky kid. My go to is always the dark meat chicken with black beans and green beans. And it's absolutely worth it to pay for an extra side of tostones for everyone to share. Everything is fresh but also feels like an indulgence.

Super good! The staff here is SO kind, so friendly. My main complaint is the portion size- especially for the chicken! The piece of chicken I got with my chicken plate (dark meat) was very very small, especially since about half of it was bone! The food itself was very good, the chicken came right off the bone, the green beans had a good sauce on top of them and the plantains were really good! I placed my order on the app and it was ready within 10 minutes. They have a good amount of seating inside, but I seemed most popular to order ahead and pick up or order to-go. I first really heard about this place through their sponsorship with UNC athletics, so wanted to give them a try, and I would definitely go back- just would see options for more chicken, etc!

Alpaca's chicken is delicious! We got yucca fries and plantains for sides- all freshly made! The yellow sauce and green sauce are also both well made, lighter than some of the other sauces I've had but still flavourful nonetheless. The restaurant setup and pricing is similar to a chipotle/cava (quick instant service) but with more emphasis on the chicken. Restaurant ambience is also very fun and artistic! Will definitely go here again.

My family got takeout from Alpaca and it exceeded my expectations! I got a quarter chicken and for the sides i got coleslaw and fries. The chicken was so juicy and flavorful and not dry at all. Everything was very reasonably priced with great portion sizes. I will definitely be back if i'm in the area and I would recommend it!

Easy to order and quick to arrive, good for a convenient and fairly tasty meal. At $30, it's a little hard to justify though especially when it gets you a single leg quarter and some fried rice. The chicken is tasty and cooked right but I could do with a lot more smoke. The rice was the standout. I didn't know I liked my rice Smokey but now I know. We sat outside on this nice day and although it's just a strip mall, it's nice to have the option for outdoor dining.

    Chicken a d green beans.

This place is always consistent and delish! The chicken is moist and soft. It's never chewy or dry. I really like the side of green beans and tostones. They really have subtle flavors that I enjoy. The black beans and rice are cooked well and they have are seasoned just right.

Delicious peruvian chicken here! I got sweet plantains and yuca fries for my sides - the plantains were nicely caramelized and tender, and fries crisp with a soft center. The green and yellow sauce were yummy, and are self-serve so you can get as much as you like!

Really good food. Really worth the money. Employees were nice ok letting us have to go containers and separating the bean and rice (I don't like my beans mixing and I was sharing with my mom). Overall clean and welcoming would come again and cute little alpaca there you can take a pic with.

Came here with some friends and I'm always a fan of Alpaca since the food is always very fresh, delicious, and service is outstanding. This is my third time here and always look forward to it. Food came out promptly and did not disappoint! This is a great restaurant in the area. Would come again.

Alpaca is always consistent with quality and flavor! The chaufa was solid and the lomo was over the top. I also enjoyed the Chi cha! The tostones have such a good seasoning and I recommend getting the Large portion which comes with 10. This was perfect for three of us. I loved the ample patio seating but the inside was the most beautifully decorated Alpaca I've been to in the area. Great job, Alpaca team - keep it up!

AUTHENTIC! Quick service and nicely decorated…read more Having spent 12 years of my life in Peru, I feel confident with my assessment of Mi Peru. I was in town for business and as in every location I travel to, I look for Peruvian food. This is in my top three. One was in Austin, TX, one in St Louis, MO and now this one in Durham, NC. I had the lunch special. It included a drink, soup and entree. Of course you have to drink Inca Cola (tastes like Squirt with Cream Soda) nice and cold. I'll have to get a Chicha Morada to take with me (which I did, and it was fruity and sweet, like a non-alcoholic sangria with cinnamon). The soup was a chicken and lentil soup with various veggies. As soon as I tasted it, I knew I was in for a treat and prayed the Aji de Gallina would be just as good. It was! Aji de Gallina is a shredded chicken dish made with Peruvian Aji amarillos, nuts, Parmesan cheese. Add in all the delicious spices Peru is known for and you have a wonderful, homey, delicious dish. I will be coming back tonight for dinner. Can't decide if I want the Seco de Res or the Lomo Saltado. Both staple dishes in Peru. Part 2 - so...I was too tired to go back for dinner. BUT, I did order in. I got the Papa à la Huancaina (so delicious, it tasted like I make at home). It is a creamy, Aji Amarillo cheese sauce over yellow potatoes. I would have liked it a little spicier, but I understand having to cater to the general public, so I'll let that slide. But the flavor was as good as you could get. I also opted to order the Seco since I thought it would travel better than the Lomo Saltado. The rice was perfect. Not soggy or spongy. Just right. Flavored with a little salt and garlic. You could eat it by itself. The Seco meat was tender. I didn't even use a knife to cut it. In fact, it pulled apart easily with a plastic fork. I would have liked a little more of the cilantro sauce to soak up in my rice. The flavors were right on, but I love cilantro...so. It even came with a Salsa Criolla (lightly pickled red onion), which is authentic and served with many Peruvian dishes. I ordered additional salsa amarillo just to taste. It's a sauce made with aji amarillo and black mint. I know it sounds weird but it's actually so tasty and fresh. My only disappointment were the beans not that they weren't good and flavorful, but they were pinto beans. I was really expecting mayacoba beans (similar to a white canary bean). Sorry, I ate it before thinking about taking pictures. All in all, I would rate this highly for those wanting to try authentic Peruvian food. My next visit to Durham I'll be trying the Ceviche and Lomo Saltado.

I got the two empanadas with aside and was able to try both the chicken and the pork. I think I liked the chicken a little bit more, but both of them were very good and the plantains were also very good. Not overly sweet, but also not super dry. I will say the parking is kind of annoying without parking space directly nearby. Had to park in the parking garage across the street. The server was very nice and mindful of waters and when we needed things. I will say almost $20 for a regular dish seemed very expensive but the food was pretty good so I would probably come back - just for the cheaper empanadas as they were pretty filling as it was. The one thing that kind of threw me off was how they set the table with their water cups upside down, touching the table. I wouldn't say that I'm a clean freak, but also that seems kind of gross to me because that's where my mouth is going to be... I'd probably do something different there myself. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. "Wonderful roasted chicken near Durham South Square"…read more I've loved the other two Durham Alpaca locations for years, but somehow never noticed this one, tucked back beside Chuck E Cheeses at what I think used to be a Boston Market building many years ago (and across the street from Sam's Club & Target). I was very impressed at the large outdoor seating area with the string lights-- looked very modern and inviting. I ordered takeout online, so I was only inside for a moment, but the restaurant was very new and clean. They had the typical area on the side for condiments, including their famous spicy green and milder yellow sauces (and little cups with lids for takeout). I ordered a quarter-chicken dark (always delicious) along with fries and rice & beans. The rice & beans had a 50 cent extra fee. My wife got the quarter chicken dark with fries and maduros (fried sweet plantains). The food was ready when I arrived, and I was handed it as soon as I said my name upon arrival. It was packaged in nice plastic containers-- not so great environmentally but they did keep the heat in and maintained the food well on the drive home. Everything was delicious as always. The chicken is always SUPER moist and tender and scrumptious, made even more amazing with some green & yellow sauce. Their fries are moist and tasty, and the rice & beans had a good flavor. My wife was happy with her food too. The price is really good-- right around $10 for the quarter dark meal deals, before tax and tip. And it's a good portion size overall, too... enough that you're not hungry after, but it's not "over the top" huge. I've always been a big Alpaca fan, and I'm glad to see them spreading to other locations with the same excellent food and fast/ easy service. One tip-- if you order takeout, use their website, not commercial ones like Uber Eats or Grubhub, so you can save a little money. I'm sure I'll be back-- loved the look of that outdoor area!
