I was highly referred, by a few, to Alpine due to their good care with older animals. I had gone to the same vet for 15 years, however felt that a change was needed. Unfortunately, when I met them it was my dog's time. I knew this before I went there. The vet, Dr. Hagen, was with me explaining and talking to me and answering my repeated questions until I let her step out to give me some time. I felt she was thorough in presenting options and was not pushy or persuasive. She did not know me or my dog until that appointment and made me feel that we were very special and important. When I picked up my dog's ashes, the receptionist was amazing when I told her what I was there for, giving just the right amount of empathy and respect. I would highly recommend Dr. Hagen and her staff for your older dog's needs. read more

Now although I have never taken my animals here I randomly called this business for some advice on some goats that I have and whether or not they should stay away from eating Pine tree's. I spoke to a woman named CJ and a woman named Cassie and I wasn't able to get an answer right away; They wanted to make sure they gave me credible information from further research or speaking with one of their veterinarians for further suggestion. They took down my name and number and CALLED ME BACK! I wasn't able to answer their call but they left me a warmhearted message referring me to the two best leads that they had. After a call from the practice owner, I've returned to update my review and scrub it for cost complaints since I can't fairly claim to have comparative information on everyone's local charging practices. I would like to point out that during the entire experience that I outline below, no veterinarian ever commented on the conduct of any other veterinarian or the correctness or incorrectness of their treatment. What you get here is the dog owners' opinion, based on personal experience colored by my own experience and several decades of non-medical engineering experience. We used to love Alpine- and we took our dog here regularly for 6 years, but the practice was sold over a year ago and our experience since then has left me less enthusiastic than I previously was. The final straw leading to this review is that our dog suffered a broken bone in her foot, which went undetected by the emergency clinic visit on a Wednesday, so we went in on Saturday to Alpine. They were able to squeeze us in despite a call that same morning, which has generally been one of the features of Alpine for years. The entire experience goes something like this: (1) Dog gets physical examination (2) Dog gets x-rays (3) Veterinarian shows x-rays to owner; veterinarian talks about how you expect the (rear leg) foot bones to look in x-ray, points out an area that doesn't follow the smooth line you expect, intimating it's a break, but doesn't identify it as such. Veterinarian offers to send x-rays to radiologist to read- owner declines because I've had enough breaks and x-rays (due to high intensity hobbies) that I felt confident this was an obvious break, and was mildly annoyed vet offered to send it out to radiologist. (4) Veterinarian offers "we could do nothing or we could splint it"; at this point was when I committed a major error. I didn't ask the follow-up question: "what are the benefits and drawbacks of each course of action?" As an over-protective dog owner, I suggested that we should splint the break, imaging a short little splint that would likely cover the adjacent joints (toes and over the hock). I was asked to wait until after the next appointment since there was only one vet in the office and we had chewed up a lot of time a that point. (5) ~45 minutes later dog goes into the back for splinting; dog re-emerges with her entire leg up to the hip encased in vet wrap with a hard plastic splint underneath. Not quite what I imagined for a break equivalent to breaking a long bone in your foot, below the ankle- but thought we would head home and see how it went. Instruction sheet says "check toes (for coldness/swelling or something similar-- basically ensure splint not cutting off circulation)"-- toes were not actually visible in the splinting configuration, so hopefully it wasn't too tight. (6) 15 minute drive home, dog is barely able to maneuver with splint (dog is tall and long-legged like a deer). (7) At home, dog clearly can't lay down comfortably and get up without awkward-looking maneuvering that spouse and I worried would cause damage to ligaments & joints on other rear leg. Call to vet's office to express concern. Spoke to vet tech who relayed concerns to vet; response from vet tech was "try it til Monday to see if she adapts and we can take it off then" sent vet tech back again with our structural concerns (strain on other rear leg) was told "vet says this is her best chance for recovery"...wait...WHAT? The person who told me 45 minutes earlier we could do nothing or we could splint is now recommending against her other option? Very unsettling. Eventually the unhappy owners convinced them to remove the splint. (8) Return to office, remove splint. Spend weekend frantically figuring out where we could find an orthopedic specialist we trusted to get a second opinion, finally got in one week later with specialist who was comfortable with the "do nothing" option. My irritation in this whole experience? Not getting the explanation behind the recommendation and getting the vet tech runaround when we called back with concerns. Researching vet books, I find that splints are not necessarily harmless- there are risks due to too-tight splinting, and with covered toes we would presumably not have insight into whether the splint was too tight and cutting off circulation. I wish I had been informed by the veterinarian as to these risks (as well as the enormous size of the splint) prior to making a choice. Alpine used to be really good at informing patients, and I think they've lost that skill. Because of this experience and two previous regular vet visits with the current practice owner, I'm uncomfortable recommending Alpine these days. read more

I would HIGHLY recommend Alpine Hospital For Animals! We have been very happy with Dr. Mones and the rest of the staff. We have been there for both well visits and for issues with Elvis, our 7 yr old boxer. The customer service has been excellent every single time! The front desk has ALWAYS been courteous and efficient. Dr. Mones is very knowledgeable, caring and compassionate. He has always discussed all of our options for treatment with such a caring and calming nature that it makes us feel more at ease with the situation. And Elvis loves him too! My experience with Alpine Hospital For Animals has been wonderful every single time which makes it worth the drive from Longmont to see them! read more

My dog cut her back leg artery and Alpine re-arranged their schedule to take on my dog within 30 minutes of us arriving. This service was given to us and we weren't even their patient....and I will say we are there patient now because of the service. read more

I will echo a prior review that Alpine charges $62 for a "physical exam" when it is not needed. I took my dog in for an ear infection only one month after they did an annual exam which cost $400. Dr. INGRAM listened to my dog's heart and nagged me about her weight BEFORE she would even look at my dog's ear. Then she insisted on probing both ears until my dog cried. It was an infection in one ear only as my dog has every summer and I asked for the med and that she stop probing her ears. The ointment, which cost only $24, cleared up the ear infection. Total bill $112. Not going back. read more

Although the vets at Alpine seem friendly and thoughtful, I have been less than pleased with their customer service. I've taken my dog there four times to get his toenails clipped and the first three times it cost $16. Then, out of the blue, the last time, they changed the price to $30. When I asked why, they said I'd just been lucky that they undercharged me the previous times and didn't even bother to reduce the price for the last clip due to the misunderstanding. This place is fantastic. They are so good about giving things to you straight, and they are not afraid to tell you when its not worth spending the $. Thankfully, I haven't yet had to take my dog there for anything life threatening, but when he hurt his leg I was sure he was going to need surgery. Even though they could have done the surgery and charged me the money, they talked me in to letting them clean and irrigate the puncture wound and observe it for a couple of days. Instead of a $2000 surgery, they charged me for a $100 office visit and they were right! read more

The facility itself is nice, the staff are friendly and treat my puppy very well. The vets are highly qualified. Having said that, I would not recommend that you bring your animal to Alpine unless you expect said animal to be in perfect health and only need wellness visits. We have had our puppy for 5 weeks and have been to 3 appointments to this clinic (3 to another that was emergency- out of town), and have been with 3 different vets. I feel as if the vets are not in communication with one another about my animal and are not up to speed on his records when I see him. I feel buyer's remorse when I leave this place, and will not be returning. I cannot claim that my puppy is the most important patient in the clinic, but I want the staff to make me feel like my puppy is the most important animal. I want to feel valued and I want my animal's health to be their number one priority. read more

We have taken our cats and dog to the Alpine vets for over 10 years, and appreciate the great mix of medical expertise and personal, compassionate care. Dr. Bureau, Dr. McCormick, Dr. Sayles, and Dr. Hageman have all given us excellent help with diagnosis and treatment of a variety of health issues for 4 different pets -- including pancreatitis, mast cell disease, blood cancers, and more minor conditions. They were also willing to do a euthanasia at our home, which really eased the pain. Dr. Bureau, our primary vet, is completely focused on our animals and provides *detailed* evaluations and a series of options for treatments/follow-up. She and her colleagues stay current on new tests/drugs/protocols, and collaborate with each another and the CSU vet school as needed, but always give the message that it is fine to "do nothing" if we choose. Conventional and newer treatment options (acupuncture, supplements) are both offered. The veterinary technician staff, especially Jen Ruiz, also are wonderful in their careful handling of our much-loved pets. We have received excellent care at Alpine, and now that we are moving to northern California I think it will be very hard to replace them. read more

Alpine Hospital is the best! I have taken my pets to them for over 15 years and wouldn't consider going somewhere else. I never have to wait for an appointment and they spend as much time as I need to get my questions answered. When a procedure is recommended it is clearly stated when something is a recommendation versus an absolute necessity and I feel comfortable saying I'll pass on something or do it at the next annual exam. My dog passed away recently and I got a sympathy card from them that was signed by everyone. It was a small gesture but it meant so much to me because I know they truly care about my pets. I Grew up in Boulder. I have been here since 1972. I have always taken my pets to Alpine. My mom worked their back in the 80,s. My sister was a volunteer their in the early 90s.At that time the place was awsome. While I still beleive they have some good vets(Nancy Bureau especially) I am sad to say, the front desk staff is extremelly rude, and the entire outfit is all about money. They excessivelly charge and do not feel it is their duty to even explain or justify the over inflated charges. They look at animals like jiffy lube deose oil changes.I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!!!!!!! read more

Alpine Hospital is a warm, loving place with incredibly talented vets. I first found them about 10 years ago when my other vet told me it was time to make a "quality of life" decision for my cat. I went to Alpine for a second opinion and he was with me for two more wonderful years under their care. They are very professional but also very caring and supportive. They also have close working relationships with specialists at CSU and elsewhere if they are needed. They are all great - but Nancy Bureau is outstanding. She spends tons of time with each pet and explains everything simply in lay terms. She also always provides information on Alternative medicine as well as Western medicine. I only wish I could find a people doctor I liked as well as I like her! read more

We brought our animals here on the advice of a neighbor. We did not have the best experience here. First we brought our dog who has deep fears of the vet, because we had heard one of the vets had animal behavior training. She actually made it worse by scolding him for growling when he was uncomfortable, which completely went against what our trainer had said. The final straw was the treatment of our cat who had elevated liver blood tests. When when they did the examination, they found her liver was enlarged and immediately suggested an ultrasound, which was $350. I was out of work at the time, and so asked them what the possible results would be of that -- would there potentially be a diagnosis that we could treat in a less invasive way (no surgery)? The doctor responded,no, they were sure it was cancer, and it was just so that "we could know." I told her of my observations, that the cat had a very healthy appetite, but she said it didn't matter. It turned into a very uncomfortable conversation, where I felt judged in a very unfavorable way. We ended up taking the cat to the Boulder Humane Society clinic, where we had a wonderful vet, who did listen, and thought it might be something else. We did end up having the test done there, at a much lesser cost, and found out the cat did not have cancer, she just happened to have regenerated her liver from a previous illness to a larger size and she's going to be ok. I just think for the money they charge, they should be better at diagnosing and also treating their customer/patients in a more respectful way. We have two dogs and two cats and we are now taking them all to the Humane Society clinic instead. read more

I drove from Denver to Alpine for all 11 of the years I had my two labs. The care was excellent and all the staff was top notch. After 5 rounds of cancer for one of my girls I have to wait to get more dogs but once I do - I will again make the drive to Boulder because they are the best!!! We have taken our dogs to Alpine since we moved to Boulder in 2005. Our dogs have received the very best care from Alpine Vets such as Dr. Nancy Bureau and Dr. Catherine Hagemeir. They have been attentive and thorough when we bring our Chessie Bay Retriever and Australian Cattle dog in for their visits. In fact, I will pick up my new puppy August 18, 2012 and his first stop on Monday August 20, 2012 will be a visit to Alpine for a check up. Great Vets. read more

I went to Alpine for about 13 years, and I loved it because the vets, staff, and front desk people all went the extra mile to take top-notch care of my pets. Then, everything changed when it changed ownership. I no longer felt that my animals' health was the number one priority of anyone there. The only thing that could make Alpine better would be if they could provide care for the humans in my family too!! We have been going to Alpine for 7 years and we have always had 4 dogs. Everything about Alpine is right. From the women who answer the phone and check you in and out, to the techs, to the doctors, the folks at Alpine are fantastic. We have had 7 dogs thru the years and have been to Alpine for everything routine as well as illness and injuries. We mostly see Dr. Bureau, but have also seen each of the other docs as well. They have guided us thru sad goodbyes and helped us with new puppies and older rescues. The love and respect they have for animals is evident with every visit. They are usually on time (imagine that!) and then spend all the time you need to answer questions and care for your animals. My sister has 5 dogs and has been going to them for years also! I have been coming to Alpine for a long time and have had very good experiences overall. The front desk ladies are friendly and helpful, the nurses are knowledgeable, and I've never met better vets. I'm only giving three stars because I have, on a few occasions, been dissatisfied with one of the receptionists (Amanda). My dog is on a medication that he has to take twice a day every single day. When i went to pick up his prescription, the price had more than doubled from the last time. I am not opposed to spending a lot of money on my dog, but when I asked Amanda why the price had shot up so high, she was incredibly rude and patronizing. She was not able to give me an explanation for the price change that made sense and did not even offer to let me talk to a manager. On another occasion, Amanda assured me that a prescription I was giving my dog did not need to be given with food and I was told by a doctor later that it absolutely had to be given with food. It is not okay for employees lacking medical experience to give medical advice. I would recommend Alpine because I love the care that my dog receives there, but be wary of information not given by a doctor. read more
