Dock and view from water front

We took our boat from Chicago around Lake Michigan and stopped in Door County, specifically Alpine Resort and could not be more impressed with the level of service. They have a full area to dock your boat overnight with electric and water (although at the time, the water was not set up but they FULLY accommodated by bringing a water line to boat). We ate dinner at Burton's on the Bay and thoroughly enjoyed the steak bites to start and the pesto shrimp was out of this world. We stayed on our boat but our parents stayed in the cottage Mississippi. The cottage was freshly renovated and very charming. Today is our last day and we are very sad to be going but we will forever remember this resort due to the kindness of its staff and the beauty of its grounds. We'll done Alpine Resort, until next time!

Garbage! Probably the worst golf course I've ever played. One of the workers was aroused the whole time we were checking in

Hotel rooms were hard to come by in Door County, and the Alpine had just renovated their "Club House" to have guest rooms upstairs.

It was more than I generally pay for lodging, but I found that it is well worth the price. One issue that could be corrected. The floor of the shower is contiguous with the floor of the bathroom in suite 11.. There is noting to keep the water in the shower. We made it work by soaking up the errant water, but the design is flawed.

Being on the lake is a bonus but in February the point is moot. It was very strange that coffee was not included with the room, but I was told it could be found in the vending machine! This was a major diss satisfier as the hotel lobby. Coffee was very watery and not drinkable for me. We were quite a large party, and it had a nice space for setting up our food up in a loft area above the lobby. Nice pool and whirlpool but with an early checkout time of 10 AM we didn't get to partake. That was disappointing. It is quite spacious, moreso than what some pictures indicate. It's pretty modest, some basic utensils in the kitchen, small electric stove, microwave, sleeper sofa, etc. The TV is very small and old, we ended up watching movies on our computer. Overall the room was dated but pretty clean. Water pressure could be a little better. The heat got hot pretty quick, which is nice in the middle of a Wisconsin winter. If you are in town and spending a lot of your time exploring Door County, this is a nice home base. Excellent location with a few shops and restaurants in walking distance. Check out the Big Easy for breakfast, it's immediately next to the resort. We tried to walk to the Main Street Shops Saturday afternoon but they were all closed. Much of the town is seasonal and we had trouble with places being closed down or shortened hours. The pool was was indoor and they have a heated jacuzzi. I couldn't spend much time in there because the chemicals were making me cough, but my boyfriend enjoyed this amenity. There is no fitness center. Front desk offers free coffee and you can apparently take games to borrow from them, too. We would come back and stay here, it was definitely a reasonable price. However, we probably don't recommend Door County in the dead of winter.

The two things that made it a less than optimal stay: beds were old and had visible sags in the mattresses. Wasn't just our room -- I asked for a different room and a very kind employee let me look at a few other rooms to find a better bed. Ended up upgrading to get a newer bed without sagging. Also, have you ever stood next to a lady in a store that had WAY too much powder or lotion or perfume on? Thats what the hallways smell like - they have a scent that sprays regularly. It's STRONG. Thankfully they don't spray the rooms, but if you're sensitive to scents, it'll probably overwhelm you. Wouldn't stay here again.

The master bedroom is massive, the kitchen fully stocked (as with all Wyndhams), but for us the best feature is the enclosed, heated patio with a comfy 4-chairs/table set. It leads to an outdoor deck with a Weber grill. The Recreation Center has a good sized heated pool indoors and outdoor hot tub. We stayed at The Shallows for three nights in October 2024, and the resort is still wonderful under the new owners. Unfortunately, staying at The Shallows now comes with rules - no daily housekeeping service, leave dirty towels outside our door, and receive new towels that are crawling with mosquitoes and bugs. Also, empty our own trash at the dumpster if we don't put the garbage can outside the door by 10:00am, and make your own bed. This was supposed to be a nice get-away weekend where we don't have to worry about housekeeping. While we understand that some things have changed since Covid, we don't expect to pay $200 a night to clean our own room and remove dirty towels and garbage - not our idea of a vacation. We've stayed in many motels and hotels since the Covid pandemic and have always had daily housekeeping. Unfortunately we will not be staying at The Shallows again. The "new rules" should be stated on the web site, and they are not - very misleading. We, and our friends who join us each summer, will not be returning to The Shallows.
