As the young folks say, "Wow, just wow". We took the Yankee Boy Basin tour, much to my hubby's hates-to-spend-money chagrin. About 20 minutes into the tour he leaned over and said, "This was beyond worth it, thank you." There are so many excellent reviews that I can only add this to the chorus: The day we went the weather was pretty miserable. It was cold, cloudy, and rained non-stop. No lie. HOWEVER, Carl our guide was a truly warm soul who obviously cared so much for our comfort and enjoyment. I don't know how they did it, but in spite of the terrible weather, we truly stayed dry, warm, and cozy start to finish. And the views? Forget about it, there wasn't a bad one the whole time. We ran into another tour group and they were saying, "We want to go on your jeep!" because theirs was just not as nice or as comfy as Alpine's was. Don't hesitate, book this tour! read more

Don't look at any other company! I was with a group of 7 including a 47 year old who is terrified of heights as well as a 7 year old & 2 10 year old kids. We ALL had a great time! There are some hairy places along this journey that I would not trust anyone but this company to drive! Joe was an amazing driver! He never let us feel like we were in any kind of danger. His co-pilot, Sue-Sue (dog), was a great addition to the trip. You could tell Joe loved Sue-Sue and would absolutely not be letting anything happen to her or us. He is also a new dad so we knew he wanted to get home safely. Joe was very knowledgeable about the wildlife, history, flowers, and anything else you could imagine. We searched for bears but were unsuccessful although we did think a stump was a bear. Joe's binoculars were high powered! The Imogene pass is INCREDIBLE!! A wonderful way to learn about the history of mining in the mountains above Ouray. Our guide, Don, picked us up from our campsite and took us for a guided private tour based on the things we wanted to see. He was engaging, personable, and knew a lot about the history of the mines and about the geology of the area. We got to sit in the back of the open aired jeep. The VERY comfortable seats gave us a platform from which we could see the sights very easily and he had a handy ladder to climb in and out. It was the highlight of our trip! We had Sam as our tour guide and he stopped in all the right places and was patient with us. The seats are AMAZING , especially when it gets a little later in the day and the sun starts to set. We put on the heated seats on our way down the mountain. He told us bits and pieces of the history of the city and the mountain peaks. He was fun and professional and drove with confidence. Jason was our tour guide on a 4 hour private tour in mid June. I HIGHLY recommend you use Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours. Customer Service- Jason and his team offered to pick us up from our hotel. We opted not to; however, parking can be limited, so if they offer, then I'd take them up on it. This may only be available for private tours. I spoke with someone else on the phone while booking the tour, and was very pleased regarding their promptness and willingness to accommodate our schedule. He took pictures of our group, allowed us to get out whenever we wanted, and even extended the tour a few extra minutes. Jeep- We rode in a fully loaded Jeep Rubicon. The vehicle was new, comfortable, and clean. The roof was down, and all the windows were down. Plenty of visibility, it was great. Jason explained the different mechanical advantages to Alpine's Jeeps compared to their competitors. Basically, Alpine tours can do more and see more because they have better vehicles. History of the area- Jason was especially knowledgeable about the history of the mines, and he was very informative about how Ouray was settled and developed. Safety- Jason drove at a comfortable and safe speed. Considering it was a Jeep tour on rough terrain, the ride was smooth and comfortable. Overall it was stunning. Don't get too concerned about which route to go on and which route not to go on. This was the best experience we had in Ouray! He was so knowledgable about the area and really took the time to show our family many different sights. He joked with our kids, took time to answer their questions, it was just perfect. Also judging by looks, this is the nicest keep to ride in. Very comfortable seats, he even turned on seat warmers when the weather got a little chilly. When it sprinkled a little rain, he got out, gave us blankets, and covered the vehicle with a rain cover. Absolutely gorgeous blue ribbon day with Joe as our wonderful tour guide! My husband and I did a private tour and he was so knowledgeable of the history of mining in the area, wildflowers, geology and the names of all the peaks. Bonus - he spotted 6 bighorn sheep in the distance so we pulled over and got to see them using his binoculars. We went out early (highly recommend) and made it to Yankee Basin before the crowds, went to a high mountain lake and finally to a secret area where we got out and hiked to see a beautiful waterfall. He was knowledgeable​​ and drives school buses during the school year. So, you know he's an expert driver. I would do this again in a heartbeat​. $5 credit card minimum​ in the gift shop so if you just want a bottle of water, you have to go across the street to get cash. Four Texas Grannies booked a private 4 hour jeep tour to see Imogene Pass in the new Gladiator Jeep with Alpine Scenic Tours in Ouray. Be prepared for sheer drop offs with no guard rails and riding over a lot of boulders on a minimally improved County Road! At the Imogene Pass summit the 360 degree views are spectacular. We were able to leave early and got ahead of other traffic going up. Our guide, Joe, was perfect. Sam was our guide. He knew a lot about the area, the wildlife, the flowers, and the mines. He was a terrific driver, and I always felt safe. He made stops to let's us take pictures. If we had to use the bathroom, he'd stop, and we'd find a bush. Lots of us ladies needed to use the bathroom because of altitude meds and the rough ride. Sam was accommodating. Our group was cohesive because Sam had us all talking and laughing. We saw more than expected. Take a hat! I got the worst sun burn. I was hot the whole time. Bring snacks, water, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and a hat. Also, there's no place for your trash so bring a small plastic bag. Sam has toilet paper. Plan on about 4 hours. Get there at 8:30-8:45am so as not to hold the group back. Also, it's customary to tip your driver. read more

Don't leave Ouray without doing a jeep tour! I originally booked a half day (4 hour) afternoon tour with San Juan Jeep Tours for my family with 3 children. The morning of our tour, Greg from San Juan Tours called and they had an unexpected problem with their drivers and weren't going to be able to handle the tour. He was extremely apologetic and offered to make it up to me, including offering a full day (8 hour) tour for the price of a half day tour. That didn't work out because of my schedule. In the end, he made arrangements for another company (Alpine Scenic Tours) to take our tour. Donald from Alpine Scenic Tours gave us the tour and did a fantastic job! He took us through the Yankee Boy route but took an alternate rough, scenic route. And when I say rough, I mean just that. He took the jeep through tough very bumpy terrain, going over large rocks, giving us quite an adventure! Our kids absolutely loved it and had smiles on their faces the entire time! At one point, it started to rain really hard and I thought this was going to ruin our day. Donald stopped, handed out ponchos, and said this was normal for the mountains where rain would come in quick and hard for a few minutes and then go away. He was right, it rained hard for about 5 minutes and then the sun came out. Perfect riding weather after that! Donald did an excellent job explaining the geography, wildlife, plants, climate, the Ouray community, and the whole mining industry and it's history. He was knowledgeable and passionate, and made us appreciate the ride even more. He also did an excellent job of mixing it up. He stopped at several points and took us on some short hikes to interesting sites. He made sure we got some really good photos along the way. He really wanted us to walk away feeling at awe. After he found out we were on a road trip through Colorado, he suggested some additional spots we could do on our own, along our trip. He made it personal, and we never felt like we were just another tour he had to give. The "jeep" we were in was a perfect set up. It was a regular full size pick up truck, but instead of a bed in the back, there is a raised platform with two rows of 3 bucket seats (6 seats total). With no doors or roof, you feel like you're out in the open, which made the experience that much better. There is a tarp that can be pulled over the roll bars If it rains for an extended period of time. Obviously you want to wear layered clothing in case it gets chilly, which it can when you reach higher elevations. We saw other tour companies on the same route, but they were using hardtop Jeep Wranglers, which doesn't give you with the same experience. The only compliant I have is, Donald had to speak to us through the opening of the rear sliding window. WIth engine and wind noise, it was hard to hear him at times. As far as the question of full day vs. half day tour, I think half day is more than sufficient, especially if you have kids. As much as they enjoyed it, I think a full day would have been too much for them. I can't imagine sitting in a bumpy jeep with the top down, chilly wind blowing in your face for 8 hours, adult or child. Since I dealt with both Alpine Scenic Tours and San Juan Jeep Tours, I will post this same review for both. I give Donald and Alpine 5 stars, and Greg and San Juan Jeep Tours 4 stars (because they didn't fulfill the tour that I originally booked with them). If I could, I would give San Juan 4 1/2 stars because Greg was very apologetic and tried to make it up to us. In the end, he did a good job of making setting us up with Alpine. read more

The trucks we rode in were comfortable with bucket seats and bum warmers :) making the trip extra cozy. Sam put the top up and took extra precautions while it was raining. My father, mother, two kids (ages 2 and 6), and I went with Michael on a tour July 23. When we arrived to the meeting place, we were greeted warmly, and Michael got to work right away installing the carseats for me. Michael secured the seats well and ensured that the kids were able to see for the tour. The seats on the truck were so comfortable and felt very safe with their shoulder and lap straps. We had plenty of leg room (which was great for my 6'5" father) and space for our camera bags and the snacks we brought along. Michael was not only courteous, but extremely knowledgeable about the areas we toured. He pointed out different sites and gave the history of the points of interest. In addition, he was able to answer all of our questions including the geological information. He was able to point out things that we would have missed (like the baby whistle pigs snoozing in the sun). The major bonus was the wit and humor he brought to the tour. We were so pleased with the entire tour. Our pictures were fantastic. The kids and adults had a great time, and I'm hoping we can do it again next summer! What A Great Tour! After reading all the great reviews for this company, I gave Alpine a call. The owner, Michael, was all about customer service. He explained the tour in detail, what to expect and was genuinely enthusiastic about being our guide. We showed up for the tour and I was psyched to see the tour rig--heated seats, open air and the machine was built for the mountains. I knew my family was going to be safe, warm and happy with the tour. Michael, clearly a historian of sorts, wowed us with his knowledge of the area, floral, fauna and his driving expertise. Excellent Tour! Upon arrival for our private tour Michael, the owner, and James, our guide, took the time to ask what we had in mind, offered suggestions and were genuinely interested in making this a great experience. My wife shared her discomfort with heights, however both Michael and James put her at ease before we even began the tour. James was very personable, extremely knowledgeable of the area and an obvious experienced driver. We always felt safe even riding along a sheer drop canyon. I called Alpine this past weekend and talked to Mike who told me that he could take my husband and I out the following afternoon. Since we wanted to rent a jeep on our own and play around Ouray but also go out with professionals to more difficult trails, we planned a jeep rental around Alpine's schedule. Mike was going out on a tour and would call me back to officially book. I waited and no call back so I tried him again. This was hours after we originally chatted. Finally we talked and he then informed me that he was going out of town the next morning and didn't have a driver. We already had our rented jeep for a specific amount of hours so I then had to find a tour to work around this. I wasn't very happy with this unprofessionalism. I called San Juan tours and they set us up happily! Then, I accidentally went to the wrong location the next day (at Alpine) and their driver was haughty and criticized San Juan tour vehicles. We found the right location and San Juan tours was amazing!!! Shame on you Alpine! UPDATE: I was woken up by multiple texts sounds from my cell phone two weeks after my experience with Alpine Tours by Mike, the owner. He was trying to cover his poor business practices up by sending these "guilt texts" from my review at 11:00 pm up to 12:00 am! He made many snide remarks then offers to compensate me for my money spent with his competitor. I guess he thinks this is acceptable business? It's completely unacceptable. I have never had this happen in my many years of using Yelp! This is his obvious desperate attempt for me to change my review but I am not changing it, it will stand as is because that was my experience with his business.
