I was worried this tour was just for little kids, but our family of adult sons and daughters-in-law thoroughly enjoyed it! I highly recommend buying your tickets in advance. There is a tour every hour. When we arrived at 10:45am, the 11am tour was sold out, but they squeezed us in! There's an outdoor kitchen with picnic tables for people who want to have breakfast on site. I heard guests raving about how great the food was! We unfortunately already had breakfast! Our tour guide, Jason, was very knowledgeable, personable, and entertaining! The walking tour (very easy) into the mine was fascinating. It's COLD inside the mine, so bring a jacket or sweatshirt, even in the summer! The floor is quite wet from the natural springs that drip along the walls of the caves. We thoroughly enjoyed our 1 hr historical glimpse of the hard life of a miner in the 1890s. read more

Bruce was our tour guide and did just a fabulous job showing us the mine and then sharing the history of the mine. It was quite educational and fun. Great guided tour and some very interesting information about mining operations in the area. The day in the life of a miner at the turn of the 20th century was very interesting. On the tour you will walk through shallow puddles of water at times and it very consistently cool in the mine. Dress accordingly. Otherwise it is an easy walk of about 1500 feet into the mine. read more

Really good mine tour. They used to run you back by train, but apparently no longer use it. Now you need to walk, which is pretty easy and gives you a good look at some of ghe formations along the way. I went with a group of seven and we didn't make reservations. The tour guide that we got was named Bruce and he made lots of jokes and interacted with the people who were there for the tour. The gift shop was really cool with gem stones and jewelry. You get to wear a hard hat and I recommend wearing closed toe shoes and bringing a sweatshirt or a jacket the temperature is chilly. It has lights are spread out but you usually aren't without light. The gold panning was cool, to the right of the entrance when you are coming in there is an instruction board. The gold mining is free and easy to do. Outside the entrance/exit there was an elevator prop that you could stand in and my group took a photo inside. Also everyone was very nice. Overall this was an epic and experience. read more

You'll walk and stop mostly flat but you're technically going uphill on the way in. At the end of your walk in, there are benches to sit, watch, and listen about how to mine. That part was fun as a couple boys got to learn and show us how mining with posts and sledgehammers works! This was a great mining tour. Last about an hour. It's 1500 feet walk in and 1500 out of course. It's pretty flat. 1% incline in. The guide it was great. He stopped 3-4 times along the way in to take about different part of the mine. You do not need to duck at all in the mine. Just need to duck twice heading in. Lights in the mine helped with my anxiety. There is water running out of the mine from water seeping down. Your shoes will get wet but not bad. This was an awesome tour. read more

This place was awesome! The mine tour was great, good for adults and kids alike. Our tour guide (Jason? I think?) was funny and informative. After the mine tour our kids did the panning for gold - best $5 (each) I ever spent, they sat there panning for 45 minutes and didn't even complain about the rain. I forget the woman's name who helped with panning but she was similarly awesome and knowledgeable about all the little bits of rocks and things that they found. We have three young kids, and my only suggestion would be to make the panning for gold area (at the end of the tour) better so the kids can actually find pyrite. Tours here are an hour in length and start every hour on the hour. Arriving about 10 minutes ahead of the tour would be a fantastic idea. Wear closed toe shoes (it's a wet mine inside), and bring a light jacket. Wearing jeans wouldn't be amiss either because the air that flows through the mountain can be quite chilly, even in mid-summer. My kids had the best time at the Gold Panning station. We came home with a small vial each with flakes/extremely small chunks of Pyrite (fools gold), Copper and Silver. Between the Gold Panning (we did it before and after our tour) and the tour itself, I think we spent about 2 hours here as a visit. Our tour guide, Jason, was friendly and highly informative on the history of the area and mining in particular. The rest rooms were clean and well maintained. Terry was exceptionally patient with my kids as they kept asking for his professional opinion on what they got gold panning. Overall this was a wonderful stop in Ouray and I highly recommend. As a side note - they have a stables next door, so if you want to make a day of it, I'd recommend looking into that together. We were woefully unprepared to add that into our day. read more

Really glad to read about other positive experiences at the mine tour, but I have to say I was expecting much more. When we arrived the staff was pretty friendly, but we wanted to grab some of the BBQ lunch they advertise, but their kitchen was closing in a half an hour (though it was already closed up) so they heated up some bbq in the microwave, and sold us some chips, and we sat outside to scarf our lunch in time for the tour we'd just (over)paid for. Our own fault? Yes. But I wasn't happy with the experience, or the way the guy running the front counter said they could absolutely still make us BBQ, when he meant they would microwave some for us. The mine tour itself was incredibly short. Including cart time inside, it was a maximum of 40 minutes. We did learn some pretty cool things, but we had the unfortunate luck of joining a tour of about 15 camp kids, all about 7 years old. Kids are great (unless they belong to other people) but these kids were actually pretty decent. Not a whole lot of misbehaving, just usual kid antics. But what surprised me was the tour guide asking for questions, and then when the kids would ask (in the typical parlance of a confused stuttering 7 year old) a question, the guide would be fairly rude back. He was also rude to the camp counselors. Maybe if it's a bunch of adults who are all joking, that's fine. But in this situation I wasn't very pleased with how he acted. While we learned some interesting historical facts about the mine and mining I felt like the tour was really light on substance. As if I was at a movie that had about 15 minutes of plot stretched into an hour. This may have been in part because of the kids on the tour, as the guide struggled to give both the kids presentation and an adult presentation. Overall I was fairly disappointed that almost $50 for two people amounted to microwaved bbq and 40 minutes standing inside a tunnel in a mountain. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I was super excited for this mine tour and felt the value for my money just wasn't there. read more

A fun and educational way to spend an hour with the kids. Guides were engaging and had personality. If you get claustrophobic (the train to/from the mine has plenty of space as does the mine) and/or dont like the dark, this probably isn't for you. Honestly really engaging and fun! I went on a gorgeous fall day with my husband, and the other group was 3 adults (one of whom owned a mine in AZ). The guide, my husband, and the AZ-mine-owner were really able to 'geek out' on the tour and it became very personalized for our group. I learned a ton and it was really exciting to walk into the mountain. The guide was also super knowledgable and able to answer an extremely wide range of questions. It was a good way to kill an hour. The tour just walked inside the mine, talked for 20 minutes, then walked back out. There is a pond outside where you can pan for gold, that was almost better than the tour itself. They also sell minerals and other interesting rocks. The staff was very nice and friendly. read more
