I've been meaning to make a trip up to Alpine Tabacco, and today was the day! The place is beautiful and the atmosphere is inviting. As a walked trough the door I was greeted by Shawn and after a brief introduction i went to the cigar room. Beautiful collection that makes use of every inch of space in the room. And for Shawn's passion I wish it was bigger, just to see what else he can bring in. After my smoke we had a nice conversation and I will definitely will be back with some friends. Went here on a Wednesday afternoon and was told I could not sit at the bar. It was dead maybe 2 people were in there and I just wanted a pint while I waited for my wife to get out of work. I have been here a few times before and didn't really care for the bartenders attitude. Clearly he has a superiority complex. My wife said she liked the bar but the bartender was cocky and made her not want to go here. I gave it another chance and that's when I was told the bar was "reserved" apparently for "locals" keep in mind I was born and raised in alpine. When I turned around there was reserved signs on every table. Not wanting to sit outside I went to Mciilhenny's brewery and was greeted with a smile by long time friends working the crowded bar. I see now why this shop is so empty and the brewery is so crowded. Also the beer was great at the brewery. read more

In your travels through the mountain community of Alpine, perhaps you might want to enjoy a cold beer or a nice glass of wine. This place has that and more. If it's a decent cigar that might be your preference too as they have a walk-in humidor as well. Also, there are two outdoor patios. One is always roped off for (some) reason. The other is available for use by the paying customers. They even have a big screen TV on the patio (that sits on wheels) so it can be wheeled inside at closing time. However, this particular TV screen is of the old style in that it has a very (glossy screen) and it often needs to be repositioned in order to not get as much glare from the large white house across the street. The downside is... IF (you), the customer should move the TV in order to turn it slightly in another direction away from the glare, the "owner" who goes by the name of "Shawn" (will) come out and put the TV (back) in the position that (he) wants it to be in. NOT in the position that is most desirable for the customer! The last time I was there with a friend we moved the TV about six inches and "Shawn" did not like that. He came out within a couple of minutes and put it back to where (he) wanted it to be. This fellow "Shawn" keeps his place in very nice condition and it is very clean at all times. I will give him that but from the "customers" side of the fence... it's (all about getting as much money from people as he can (via the prices) he puts on everything. This guy is also very moody. You never know what you're going to get when you go in there. One day he treats you with all kinds of respect and is personable and then... you go in on another occasion and he is distant, pretends he's never seen you before and is mildy rude. Enough so that you... (the "customer") take obvious notice of it! The other downside is that if you sit out on the patio you are subjected to a LOT of heavy truck traffic and it never ends. So if you are the kind of person who enjoys going to a cigar lounge to relax and be treated in a manner that you would expect from the "owner" well... with this place... its a crap shoot because as far as "Shawn" goes... as I said... he's a very moody character and he appears to be the "owner" (it may be his father who is the real owner), but who knows for sure? He certainly could use some life lessons on how to treat people though. Sometimes he's nice and polite and other times he's just plain rude. It is for these reasons mentioned that I and my friend have decided (because of his "attitude")... we will not ever be patronizing that place again. Money is obviously the main concern with "Shawn" (obviously) and customer relations comes in at a distant 9th. This fellow seems to always be preoccupied with thoughts that seem to remove him from the immediacy of his (real concern) and that is... the "customers." The first time I went in there (for example) I was about to enter the walk-in humidor and he rushed over to stop me and asked me what I wanted. I said that I wanted to be able to LOOK at the cigars in order to be able to make a selection of what to smoke. I DID have a protective mask on that day too. I am a clean and decent person, not homeless or disheveled in appearance. Finally, he relented and allowed me access to his humidor. I have NEVER been to a cigar lounge in my entire life before where the proprietor has restricted my access to their humidor. I am also a senior citizen and a U.S. Military Veteran. This man "Shawn" is quite obviously of a very different culture than that of people from the United States and his (behavior) is very (common) among many local Smoke Shops in San Diego whereby, from the instant you walk in the door they keep a very sharp eye on you until you exit their shop. It's as IF they instantly suspect you of coming for the SOLE purpose of STEALING from them! I've noticed this and it is a culture unlike ours here in the United States that, when you come right down to it... is just plain RUDE! THAT is HOW I perceive it and because of that negative behavior from that culture of people... I simply will NOT patronize their businesses again. My philosophy is that if you cross me in ANY way whatsoever... you, (as a store owner) will LOSE my business forever. This is NOT how I grew up here in the United States of America (where I was born) and it is not how I expect to be treated in my own country. It's simply common sense. If you are dealing with the "public" you do ALL you can to be nice, kind, accommodating, and polite to them. "Rude"... just plain don't get it. BTW... my **** four stars are for the condition of the place... not anything else. read more

Very nice atmosphere with bar and outside patio. Cigars well kept in walk in humidor; fair selection. You will pay a premium for the upscale atmosphere but it is special. I would have given more stars, but I'm a daily stogie smoker and the premium prices are too expensive for me; I prefer a man cave type lounge. Great place to take a lady. read more

I used to be in Alpine once a week, and you can bet your bottom dollar, I'd make a point of coming in for a stick. They have a great variety. Sometimes, the outdoor seating is where I'd enjoy my stogie. Othertimes, it would be inside with a glass of red wine, and talking sports with Shawn -- one of the most interesting men you could meet. Sure there are a few lounges in the San Diego area that cater to those of us weirdos that enjoy the aroma's of cigars and pipes - but sitting this far out in East County they are harder to find, and certainly lack the atmosphere that is welcoming to those that enjoy the art associated with a fine cigar and stiff libation to relax the evening away. Enter Alpine Tobacco Company. With its ample exterior (covered) seating, solid selection of wine and beers (local and crap), and great company, the ATC offers everything you would find in the City but adds in the country friendly staff. Knowledgable about their products and life in the 'sticks' you are always greeted with a warm welcome and the service is second to none when compared to other lounges. Your table is set, television turned to whatever you want to watch (and the remote is handed over to you), heat is turned on if needed, and you are checked in on just enough to be convenient but not so much that you feel like your visit is being closely guarded and they are trying to turn tables. I have sat with a tall cold beer and fine cigar long enough to watch a solid two hour movie, and then a show or two while hanging out with friends and family and have never felt pressured to purchase more or leave. The walk in humidor, while on the small/medium size, is packed with quality sticks and fair prices. Machine rolled goods are available in the lounge area for sale as are a wide variety of smoking accessories. I've been coming here for years and I couldn't believe I hadn't left a Yelp review for his place in all this time... ATC is a one stop shop for all your cigar, cigarette, pipe, chew, vape, and hookah needs! They have plenty of gifts and accessories for sale too! Not to be outdone, the beer and wine is a rather varied selection as well. There's a few barstools and a few bar height tables indoors, and a very nice outdoor patio to soak up the great San Diego county weather we have year-round! On the weekends, there's food catering serving up pretty good food to accompany the great beer, wine, and cigars offered at ATC. Straight up just a very good spot to get some cigars. I lived in Alpine for a short stint and Alpine Tobacco kept my humidor stocked. They have a mild selection of hookahs and cigarettes but the main attraction is the very nicely sized walk-in humidor. Also even better news the owner (awesome to talk to if you have a minute) just recently got his liquor license so now he serves beer and drinks on the patio. Could there be a better place?
