We spent another wonderful Saturday afternoon at Dorothy's Wine Bar in The Headquarters at Seaport Village, and it always exceeds all expectations. I am so thrilled I stumbled into Dorothy's Wine Bar while in San Diego! I'll admit that I only stopped in this complex because I needed to use the restroom, but the interior was so cute and they had great happy hour prices so I decided to stay to enjoy a glass of wine (ok two) and a little snack. They offer some seating indoors, but I opted for a spot on the patio to enjoy the sunny afternoon. The happy hour wine selection was excellent and I started with a red blend that was great, then shifted to a sparkling. The bartender was wonderful and gave me a sample to try before I ordered. I had dinner plans so don't want to eat too much, but the warm tajín olives were delicious and something I need to recreate at home. I had one of their whites and one of the reds. Both were really good. We also had the bread as a little snack. They have a cute little inside, and a nice patio space. They have a great wine selection that changes, so you can always try something new. They do a nice job finding wines from different regions throughout the world. And if you have someone in your group who isn't a wine person, there are some beer options too. While it is in a touristy area of SD, don't let that scare you away. I discovered this place from Eventbright. They hosted a flamenco group, who were so fun to watch. They were severely understaffed for the event. It looked like maybe 3 people were working with a crowd over 50 people. Luis is so pleasant though, and the show was captivating. It was easier to overlook the long wait time for service. Aside from that, this is a cute place to enjoy a glass of wine with small bites. The interior is small, but they have a patio that faces the center of the plaza. Great selection and very warm welcoming service. The whole vibe just relaxes you and is very comfortable. They have seating outside that could accolade both small and large groups. I think this spot would be perfect for any occasion, friends, party's, large groups, date night - 100%. I would highly recommend checking this place out if you're a tourist from out of town or a local...it will leave an impression on you. It's very convenient if you're staying at the hotel, otherwise parking in the area isn't super easy no matter where you're going downtown. I'd generally recommend taking a Lyft for anyone coming to the area for a night out, so much more convenient. It's hard to find the right words for this place, it was just special in every way. They're relatively new and nestled in a small plaza next to Cheesecake Factory in Seaport Village. I stopped by with my family to have some good drinks and conversation. We were greeted by Luis and Tim who made us feel instantly welcomed. There was seating inside and outside yet we opted to sit outside as it had a lounge/backyard vibe to it. We arrived mid afternoon which worked out perfectly because it was happy hour. My mother and I opted for Sangria as our beverage of choice while my step dad got a Mimosa. Luis brought out our drinks and made sure we enjoyed what we ordered. I suggested that he sit with us for a bit in which he did! It started to get a little cold so Tim offered us blankets. The ambiance of Dorothy's is what I seek in establishments. I like the lounge feel and the family vibe you get when you come here. They also have a few games there to encourage people to hang out. But Dorothy's Wine Bar? Absolutely tremendous. Beautiful name, beautiful place. Probably the best Dorothy since The Wizard of Oz, and honestly, I'm not convinced she didn't own this bar too. The vibes? Impeccable. Elegant but not snobby. Like a First Lady who drinks red but knows how to party. You walk in and think, "Wow, I might strike an international trade deal right here, between bites of cheese and sips of Malbec." It's that classy. The wine list is YUGE--reds, whites, bubbles, rosés... they even had something orange, which I found very flattering. The sommelier (very smart, very refined, probably reads Tolstoy before breakfast) recommended a Syrah so smooth, I offered it a cabinet position. Maybe Secretary of Sips. It's under review. The charcuterie board? Don't even get me started. So well put together, it looked like it had its own marketing team. Meats, cheeses, olives, nuts--beautiful layout, better coordination than Congress. And yes, I paired it perfectly. Because I'm a pairing genius, folks. The best. And the service? Let's just say if Dorothy herself had clicked her heels and said "There's no place like home," it's because she was trying to get back to this wine bar. The only hiccup was the kitchen and staffing setup. When we visited, there was just one person working (a lovely human, for the record), and every time someone ordered food, he had to head upstairs to the kitchen for 5-10 minutes. That meant the bar was left completely unattended, which got a little awkward for people coming in to order a drink or close out a tab. If I could make a suggestion, it would be either to bring on someone just for the kitchen or, if they prefer to keep it a one-person operation, to simplify the food menu so everything can be handled from behind the bar. read more
