We come here for the huge selection of plants every May. They grow a lot of their own & they are all beautiful. The prices are comparable to other greenhouse/farmstands around. Not cheap, but nice quality. We got a huge planter full of annual flowers for $80. This year they didn't have a large selection of herbs. No basil at all. Lines moved quickly to checkout. I love houseplants...all kinds..but I especially love Hibiscus. They were on sale a week or so ago and I bought a few. Day after day they began to fail. Leaf after leaf, buds falling off....NO! I have been raising these guys for nearly 50 years and know exactly how to care for them. Were they on sale because they knew they were inferior quality? Either way, of the 4 that I bought, none look any good and will most likely die. I am very disappointed in Alsip nursery...believe me, I will continue to buy my plants from HOME DEPOT....I've NEVER lost one from there. read more

I attended the hydrangea hibiscus plant fest yesterday in St John's. I played bingo and won the summeriffic cherry Chocolate latte hibiscus plant. I posted pics on a Google review showing how awesome and stunning it is where I planted it this morning. Alsip Nursery is a fun place to visit--so much to see--such a variety. The variety is why I ended up here, knowing the prices would be a bit steep. It's not Wally World. However, after surfing the internet several times, the only place I could find locally to shop water plant containers was Alsip. I don't have a pond and a beginner with containers, but discovered it's next to impossible to find a container with appropriate width and depth for water plants. I finally found an employee I thought might help, but he was obviously disinterested and waved his hand to one aisle and swept across another for pots and tubs. When I tried to get information on the container I hoped might work, he just explained it was plastic (made to look like concrete). No information on the label--lucky to find the size. For the price, I hope it'll get through more than one season! read more

I was verbally attacked by an employee because I asked him for tools with which to clean up my dog's business. I did not ask him to do it as I was more than willing to do so. He made a face at me and told me that he was too busy to tell me where to get the clean up items. When I spoke to a manager about this type of treatment his only response was that he would hold my dog while I picked up the three little tootsie rolls that my tiny dog had left on the floor! I was in there with my dog to pick up another dog from grooming. There were several other shoppers who witnessed the capped and pierced employee who was shouting at me! Will I return? I took my sweet dog to the grooming department just for a teeth brushing. When he came out 10 minutes later he was gasping for air and was having a hard time breathing. The male groomer said he brushed his teeth and also he sprayed something on his teeth. It is now 5 days later and my dog is not eating and is still showing signs of having a hard time breathing. The store is nice and has a lot of different seasonal items and a lot of plants and flowers. But I am upset because one worker misguided me and told me I could put a plant in a black pot I bought here as well and when I did that the plant ended up dying 3 days after because the pot needed holes for water escape and their policy is they can get a full refund only 24hrs after a purchase. Moral of the story is don't trust workers working here because they might not know, ask an expert about the plants. I've driven past here a thousand times and never went inside. I'm quite familiar with the original location in Alsip, Illinois. Today, I was eating breakfast at Round the Clock on Rt. 30 in Schererville. I was seated next to a guy at the counter and we got on the subject of weed and feed and our disappointment with Scott's lawn care products. It seems like a common complaint these days that what used to take one treatment to kill weeds with Scott's, now seems to be a losing proposition. This man told me he liked the products available at Alsip Nursery, the brands they carried. With this fresh bit of information, I headed out to Alsip Nursery down Rt. 41. I went inside and was immediately impressed with how pristine, spacious and organized the interior of this business is. I was greeted by a bearded young man who was so knowledgeable of the fertilizers, weed/crabgrass control items as well all the beautiful plants displayed. This man stayed with me, finding the only bottle left for the certain type of crabgrass I had. He truly represents Alsip Greenhouses very well. Contrary to some of the negative reviews I have read here, NONE of them applied to my first time at Alsip Greenhouse. The prices ARE NOT out of line or expensive for the quality, variety or selection of the plants and merchandise offered. I bought a Picollo Banda plant! Personally, I have a long history of working in greenhouses and owned my own florist in downtown Chicago for 35 years, my eyes tell me that Alsip Greenhouse is an outstanding, quality local business that should be supported to the fullest by the community. I most definitely will return to Alsip Greenhouse and Nursery, I was very impressed. Great customer service! Exceptional quality! You'd be a fool not to do business at Alsip Greenhouse and Nursery. We decided to do some planting in the yard of my parent's home as well as in planters on the deck. After checking out Yelp reviews, we decided to visit this nursery. They carry an assortment of flowers,trees, shrubs, fountains, planters, garden supplies, etc. I was especially impressed with the many choices of flowers. They were beautiful! All of the flowers made me excited to begin the project. Service was good and I met a staff person who turned me on to the lemony scented Citronella plants. I bought three to keep mosquitoes away. They are so fragrant! I can't wait to pick up some tomato plants in a few days. read more

Love the selection. Really do. But the fact that every single plant, flower, shrub, anything you buy WILL be infested with bugs is ridiculous. I haven't had one trip not end in mealies or aphids. It's disappointing and an issue that is so consistent I've just decided to never shop there again so I don't have to keep dealing with this. Unfortunately even if you check the plant in store this last particular plant two about a month before I noticed the bugs. It's been quarantined as all new plants should be, but here i am again trying to save a plant I wasted money on at alsip. I know plants are a risk always, but how in the world EVERY SINGLE ONE CONSISTENTLY has issues it's beyond comprehension to me. read more

I always like to support family owned (non-chain) businesses but I will not be shopping at Alsip ever again after my recent experience. Every employee I asked for assistance seemed very annoyed. One girl actually rolled her eyes at me when I asked her where the mulch was located. The girl at the register was just as rude and ended up over charging me. So I had to get in a second checkout line with my 2 carts full of flowers to get a refund for the overcharge. Every staff member I encountered was rude, unhelpful, and could not be bothered. Gone is the day of the puppy mills. I have always liked this place for plans and animal supplies. And always did not like all the puppies (don't know if they came from puppy mills or not). They recently went through a complete overhaul, thanks to the new vet on the premises. They now predominantly if not solely work with rescue animals. Working directly with the humane society in Munster. That is a big KUDOOS from me. My sister just got a year old rescue from there and the process and people were nothing but awesome. They really want to make sure the right pet finds the right home. And that the owners get a pet that they will be happy with. Excellent job on all the new changes. If you haven't checked this place out in awhile. It is time for a revisit. read more

This is a wonderful store with very nice and knowledgeable employees. They have an extensive variety of items for home and garden and the flowers/trees/shrubs, etc. are all really beautiful. There are so many choices that it is difficult to focus on one project. You are only limited by your own imagination here. If you have trouble with imagination, fear not....the staff is all welcoming and helpful. One employee that helped me (and I really did have fun looking at different choices) was Matt. He really worked with me regarding what I wanted...not what he would just recommend. He assessed my needs well and he made relevant recommendations. Thanks Matt! Good selection. Prices a little higher but that's ok. Staff working the grounds are helpful and knowledgeable. Cashier/check-out staff are not proactive in assisting customers checking out. Younger HS or college girls usually but have a certain air about them that seems disinterested or inconvenienced. I don't do pets but do use Alsip for lawn and garden supplies, including landscaping. They usually have a pretty good selection and offer pretty good advice, especially if you get the right person. Although I don't do pets, my grandkids love this place. They have all kinds of unusual pets. read more

The store inventory is amazing. A bit pricey but you got to pay to get what you want. Understandable. I have been shopping there for years for all my spring flowers and other stuff. Unfortunately I will never go there again. This morning I went to return a broken umbrella base. One of the feet had cracked off in the box. I had bought two of them yesterday. I'm already aware that they do not like when you return stuff. I'm sure it's a pain for them. But it was broken. Using my wisdom from returning items before to the store I made sure I brought all of the packing materials with me. Because of the way it is packed and the weight of it it is impossible to use it and repack it. I simply wanted another one and they had it and I know that because I saw it the day before when I bought two of them. I felt like I was treated like a school kid when I was told to go get the packing materials and I should definitely make sure I have my receipt otherwise they will not be able to help me. So I took my shopping cart and went and got the packing materials out of my car and put them in the shopping cart. And they brought them in and said here you go here's the packing materials. So instead of sending me back to get a new one I was told that they were not sure that this one that I was returning was actually broken. I gave them the broken part when I walked in the store. DUH! Now for the really ridiculous part. Two of these items totaled $198. If you spend more than $100 you get a $10 merchandise card to use on a different date. This was stapled to my original receipt. So after the incompetent checkout person re-rang my sale it came out to $98 or close to it. So she told me it was two separate sales neither one of them hitting $100 so I could not have the $10 merchandise card anymore. She took it. This was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. She called a manager and while I was waiting I was calling people and laughing hysterically about the stinking $10. It was the principle of it. Anyways one of the managers walked in the front door. This was at 9:15 in the morning. She listened to the story and said of course he deserves the $10 merchandise card. Still with a smirk on her face the cash register person started to give me my beat up staple punched voucher back at which point I could not take it anymore. I told her to shove it. I know that was not nice but neither was she. I will share this with all my friends and family who also used to shop there. I understand the job market is rough right now and it's hard to find good help. If they keep hiring help like this they won't have to hire anybody anymore because they will go out of business. I haven't had luck finding basil plants locally this year because of COVID, so I decided to pay more from a nursery. Wrong decision. The plants are TINY and two of them might not make it since they came loose from their plants during shipping. When I wasn't sure how soon these would come (I waited a couple weeks), I finally tried rooting loose basil from the super market. I have two of those thriving already and I'm very sorry I wasted money on this nursery. Not worth it in any way. read more

Your store opened at 9:00am and you were already sold out. The sale was supposed to be for two days. Ok. For those who don't know, Alsip is now doing RESCUE for animals and they are associated with the Munster Humane Society. When I tragically lost my puppy to an illness, that I had adopted from the Humane Society, Alsip's graciously worked with me and the Humane Society to help me to find another wonderful dog to save. They were kind and caring and took the time to explain each individual dog I looked at. They really look at these dogs like individuals and could explain personalities. If you are looking to adopt a pet, Alsip's is now another contender. read more

I just moved into a new house in the area and was looking to adopt a dog. After the long application process, I was told because I did not have a fence yard I did not qualify. Yet the employee told me the dog was in a foster home with no fence now and although I own a horse and been around animals all my life including dogs, right away she felt I was not a good fit. When it comes to dogs, African American have always be sterotype as not being able to care for our animals. That we only deal with aggressive breeds, and that we would destroy the breed by breeding a Pit Bull with a Poodle. These pet adoption organizations are ran by nothing but old rich white women with nothing to do and feel even an African American is not good enough to even own a dog, a dog. This has been my experience over and over again. Yet I'm 58, a professional and no one loves do as much as I do. I'm fed up with this and feel I'm just deal with a reputable breeder and lot of times I run into the same problem. They feel as if I'm not good enough to own one of their dogs. And at the Alsip Center these are not even full blooded dogs but mixed breeds and we still aren't good enough to have one. I'll keep searching to give a loving dog a home, just won't be at Alsip. read more

My wife and I were there this past Saturday shopping for flowers and perennials; I like to say that even though the place is overpriced they have large selections, we have been loyal customers for over 12 years however we won't be going back any longer. I was told by a friend to ask for a specific person as he would give us a discount, when we got there we were met with rudeness by a lady , when we asked for the person the lady reply was : I don't know where this guy is, today is my day off , I shouldn't even be here . She paged someone else, so a few minutes later a woman came over and with a very loud and rude tone of voice said: I'm not going to give you a discount and if you need to speak with B. (the person that we were told to ask for) go look for him in the warehouse over there. All these and much more happened with other customers around and needless to say that my wife and I were very embarrassed, we cut the shopping short, paid and left humiliated. As much as we like to support businesses in our community, we will never go back nor recommend the store to anyone. read more

I came in to Alsip's for some new dog toys. I have a 77lb Boxer so we go through quite a few toys and this is where I typically chose to bring my business. This is not the first time I have been here and noticed the way coworkers speak to each other. I am assuming this is a manager because it is always one woman speaking to multiple other employees regarding the job they have to do. The employee who I thinks "managers" name Sandy, has rude and disrespectful to the employees. It happened again with an employee who worked in the pet department. I believe if there are issues that seem to go more in depth that just doing their job needs to be taken back into an office not be so disrespectful to employees in the middle of a busy isle. I am always asked if I need help with anything, and other than these few encounters with Sandy, I do really enjoy shopping here. read more

Had a ten A.M. appointment for my 2 dogs, at Alsip Nursery HAD CALLED ON TUESDAY TO BE SURE TO GET AN APPOINTMENT FOR A BATH. Got there at 9:45 and groomer says we are busy.....so why do you not honor your appointments, so she said it would be 2 hours. So we shopped and hung out, came back at 12, and they hadn't even started on them. I was LIVID. She then said come back after 3, we came back at 2;30 and she said " Oh, they have been done since 1:15, and I called and left 3 messages. Well they have my home phone number on the rewards program, I just thought they had my cell. Meantime Brie was tied to the wall with a short noose like leash. She could not lay down if she wanted to, and she was like that since 1:15, deplorable. NEVER NEVER NEVER again will I return to Alsip Nursery in Frankfort for a dog bath.And to make matters worse, Driver's toenail fell off in the bath, so he was bleeding when we picked him up, my poor babies !!! read more

Bought a kitten from them today, absolutely adored her couldnt wait to take her home, come to learn after paying for her and then taking her to get examined learned that she has feline herpes, if i had decided not to do the check up while i was there, I would have taken her home and introduced her to my other two cats and probably would have infected them too.... Called to bring her back to be told I couldnt have a full refund of $100 without talking to the manager and telling them that they didnt tell me she had herpes until after i paid for her, that is a serious problem. read more

We adopted a dog from alsip home and nursery we were informed that he was a lab hound mix. Then after asking a few more questions one of the employees told me that they don't actually figure out what kind of breed the dogs are the vet just gives their opinion. After them showing us who his mom was she was labeled a hound one day and a terrier the next. The adoption fee is also outrageous for rescuing a dog. $400 I could understand if it actually did include free neutering. But the extra cost of that was $500. And after speaking to one of the fosters there I was told that all of their older female dogs are pregnant. I was told that my dogs mother was found in a truck with the puppies. All in all I wouldn't recommend using alsip for anything especially not "rescuing" a dog. We love our dog and I'm so glad we rescued him from staying at alsip read more

This is a difficult review to write because I always want to support my local businesses and I have been supporting Alsip in St John for years but they have been really disappointing lately. It seems every time I am checking out, there is always a technical issue with the registers, whether its me or the guy in front of me. There are always long lines at the register as well which I'm sure are due to the technical problems and eliminating the check out in the garden center, which is also disappointing. There are times when I just want to shop the flowers and check out outside. But now I have to be inconvenienced and go inside the dark building and wait 20 minutes for a young girl to figure out why her computer isn't working. Because of this becoming a consistent experience there, I have found new places to buy my flowers. I look forward to shopping for flowers, as it is relaxing to me but shopping them at Alsip has just become too stressful. read more
