I like this store...a lot. They always have my size. The clothes are hip and affordable. I don't have to dig through stacks of clothes or endless racks to find what I want and need. The store's layout is simple and "to the point". I go here for their sale items. I am a huge fan of the long sleeve shirts. Came back here yesterday. Holy moly I love this place!! Went to a bunch of different stores in the area where I saw some stuff I liked and considered going back to get it. Then came here. there are a few alter locations in the area; one off of graham ave that offers both men and women's clothing in limited quantities (almost all women's) and the two separate men's and women's stores off of franklin ave. further north in greenpoint. The franklin ave stores have a wider selection, including footwear, sunglasses and more accessories. the pricing can vary but is fairly low for unique items. read more

This just might be my favorite boutique in the whole city. Sure, the LES and East Village have some great spots, but I'm just too poor for them. Alter manages to be both hip/fashionable/unique but also inexpensive at the same time!!! Case-and-point: Today. I walk in. Spot the most gorgeous, sexy, interesting black dress. Figured it was at least $200 and decided not to try it on. Then realized it was $55, tried it on, looked amazing, and bought it on the spot. Great selection, nice staff, and the men's store across the street makes me wish I were a guy sometimes, that's how nice the stuff is. read more

They not only have a wide range of options but offer selections for every price point. Even when my size isn't available in one particular item, I'll find a comparable alternative. I was given a Christmas gift of over $150 that was too small, from Alter clothing boutique, but because I live an hour subway ride away from Greenpoint, I couldn't get there to return it until January 26. My hope was to exchange the item for store credit. I had just come from a similar circumstance at another Greenpoint clothing boutique up the street, Wolves Within, where I had a horribly rude experience and where they would not give me store credit or offer any help at all (see my Yelp review). BUT to my great surprise-- Alter was the complete opposite experience!!!!! The sales person at Alter said I could return my item for store credit if I used up the credit that day. So this lovely young woman and I had a blast as she helped me find items to use up the credit. These are neighborhood shops in a neighborhood where my family has lived for nearly 30 years, long before those shops ever existed, and I was born decades before these two young sales women were ever conceived. The stark difference in attitude was blatant and says everything about management. One store (Alter) clearly respects their shoppers and takes pride in hiring sales people who are polite, respectful and who cultivate a relationship with its clientele and community. The other one (Wolves Within) couldn't give a damn about their clients or their community. In the end it barely mattes what the shop sells-- after all this is New York, you can get what ever they are selling somewhere else (or even find it online). So if you don't have polite and respectful customer service, and store policies that cater to the customer, what is the point of having a brick and mortar shop? ALTER is a great example of why to have a brick and mortar shop and how to cultivate a neighborhood clientele-- and they have high quality goods! read more

I've been in multiple times, loved the shop, and the clothes. I've even brought friends visiting from out of state in telling them this was one of my favorite shops. I walked in today to return a jacket that simply wasn't living up to it's price tag, and was greeted by the owner. He asked me if store credit was ok, to which I responded no thanks, I'd like my original tender back. He immediately repeated only store tender, and said it's store policy. No explanation why, not a single ounce of empathy, just kept stating that that's out policy. I asked for a manager to which he quickly retorted "I'm the owner." so I just grabbed the jacket and headed out and I'll dispute the charge with Amex. I was really disappointed that a company that seemed so progressive was so crappy when it came to aligning with their customers needs, and implementing policies without any reason, or explanation. I would have been ok with it had he shown even a tiny bit of understanding but alas, I will no longer be spending anymore money with them, nor will I be bringing friends back. Really, really terrible experience and seems like a desperate trap to keep money in the store instead of focusing on the customer. read more

Alter 109 is an great find, thanks Yelp. A small place on the northern part of Franklin Street, Greenpoint Ave stop on the G, it's a men's boutique (if that's not a real term I'm starting it) that carries a small but nicely selected range of clothing, from Cheap Monday jackets and shirts - why have they become so hard to find? - to some cool vintage polyester ties and aviator sunglasses. I walked out with an awesome CM jacket. The prices are pretty reasonable compared to other similar stores, such as Urban Outfitters and the always wallet-breaking Opening Ceremony. Check it out for some cool stuff and something a little different. read more

Alter is and has been my favorite Brooklyn clothing store for 4 years. Consistant, chic, and affordable. And personally, I love the sass of the owners. I don't trust sterile people or places. The point of Brooklyn is flavor. Sterility can stay on the other side of the bridge. read more

The employee was nice but the clothes were not very interesting; trying to cater to a crowd that wants to look alternative but think it needs to buy this look and doesn't want to spend too much doing so. Absolutely love this store! High on fashion, easy on wallets, friendly and charming salespeople, and a chic and welcoming storefront. The owners have impeccable taste, and they keep their shop consistently fresh and always stylish. The time and care they put into every detail of the store - the displays, fixtures, music - really confirms that these guys are a fashion powerhouse. They don't just stock garments and accessories, they curate them. The Alter boys are scouring trade shows all over the US and internationally and combing through vintage wares to put the cream of the crop on their shelves. And somehow, they keep their price points totally affordable. I'm not at all surprised to see how quickly they've grown, and that New Yorkers are taking notice. Mark my words, these guys are the real thing- You'll be seeing their names in Vogue and WWD someday soon. They love to make women look and feel beautiful, and goddamn are they good at it. read more

I love their clothing, and the owners have impeccable style. Before the store opened I always had good experiences in the first Alter store. However over the weekend I went to Alter 140 and found the workers to be rude and cold. They made unnecessary comments about my weight and I left the store feeling insulted and fuming. I always found the store convenient because of the proximity to my house but they have lost a costumer. read more
