She works out of her home, charges way too much and is unpleasant to deal with. I felt like I was a problem for her and all I wanted was 2 minutes to pickup and pay. Over the last 4 years, Dawn had altered at least 10 dresses for my daughter and I, ranging from a cocktail dress, prom gown, several pageant fun fashion pieces to a huge 30-lbs pageant gown that was fitted over the body and had a cascade of layers and a huge train at the bottom. I can't say enough how thankful I am for Dawn. After purchasing my wedding dress, I was told by the dress shop that the alterations I requested from purchasing was against their contract after they promised it could be done. Dawn is AMAZING!! I called her 2 weeks before my wedding to do a final alteration on my wedding gown. I had the first alteration done by the David's Bridal I bought it from (in NY state) and then the wedding was postponed so it sat for a while. It's a long story, but 2 weeks before my wedding was the closest I could do. It only needed an inch or two in but I wasn't sure if anyone could alter it that fast. I found her on weddingwire.com, and she was highly reviewed so I gave her a shot. When I called she said it was no problem and made me an appointment very quickly. She was great to work with and very easy to talk to. It put me at ease and helped with the last minute stress. I brought my dress in on a Tuesday and she had it done for me that Friday. It fits like a glove! I had been worried that it would fall down during the day but I'm not worried now. Some places (like the David's I went to) try to scare you into using their alterations, telling you that anyone else will mess up the beading or the shape of the dress. Dawn showed me where they had messed up the beading and she actually gave my dress a shape. David's made it pretty loose around my waist so it hung very straight. It didn't feel secure and it wasn't very flattering. Dawn tucked it in enough that I can see enough curves that it's flattering and makes me feel much prettier without making it hard to zip up. It also feels more secure since I know it can't go any lower on my waist, so I don't have to worry about flashing people at the reception! All in all I am so thankful for Dawn's help, and I plan to use her again whenever I have a dress that needs altering again. She did a much better job than the shop I went to before, charged half the price, and was very quick and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her! read more

Dawn provided the alterations for my lace wedding gown spring of 2013 and I would confidently return to her for any future alteration needs. She works by appointment from her home in Hagerstown, MD. I met with her for the initial fitting and a final fitting (everything fit like a glove after the first fitting which took 3 weeks to complete the alterations- during Prom & wedding season!). Dawn hand stitched my lace gown (removing 2-3 inches in length) so I could wear flats for my outdoor wedding. She also refit the straps with a deep V-neck back so it laid flat, and inserted cups into the chest (so a bra would not be needed). I was impressed by her handiwork and her efficiency. She listened to all my concerns and knew how to work with the lace to preserve the quality of the dress. Highly recommend with your wedding dress!! read more

Dawn has been my go-to for all of my clothing alterations, for many, many years. Fact is, you cannot and will not find a better tailor, seamstress or fashion consultant in the DC metropolitan area or beyond (believe me, I've searched and tried). She has moved her business farther away than when I first began using her services but I will gladly drive an hour to see her, she's worth it (she makes special arrangements to see me during off-hours which is just a huge plus in my book!) because I just truly cannot find anyone nearly as good as to what she can do. I've even gotten her to make me designer, specialized clothing, she is amazing, you will not find anyone with work like hers at such prices. My friends and family have since began using her services as well as the alteration industry is just terrible, bad qualty and workmanship in the DC area. It is a dying trade and skill, sadly. If you are like me and buy your beautiful clothing but cannot trust many seamstresses to handle the job then you must trust me and see Dawn. She's altered & put in new zippers as well as built in bra cups for a homecoming dress, a prom gown & just this week a formal dress for my 8th grade daughter's dance. Although her place is packed full with other jobs, we never feel rushed and she gives us her full attention. The prices are very normal and neither cheap or expensive. Please think twice before hiring Dawn Brooky of Alterations by Dawn. Below is a summary of my experience. I have photos documenting all of Dawn's work, and I have shared those photos with her and with the dress store who recommended her as a seamstress. The dress store offered a sincere and quick apology after seeing the photos (even though Dawn's work is not their fault). Dawn responded as you will read below. *Quality of Service: *Very* poor quality work overall (large stitches showing on the front of the dress in numerous spots; a zipper placket with fabric puckering and pleating; grimy spots around where she sewed in the sleeves; lining sewn in with puckers and large visible hand stitches; etc.), plus Dawn ruined my sash and my sleeves. The sash is replaceable, but not the sleeves. Dawn looked at the photos I sent her and told me nothing was wrong with her work, and that the problem was me. *Responsiveness: Dawn responded to my calling to make appointments, but she was not responsive to my requests for a refund. Her responses to my problems with my dress were not based on concern for me, for my dress, or for my stress, but for how she could salvage her reputation and cast blame on me. *Professionalism: Dawn treated me decently in her fitting room. When I came to her with the problems in her work and to request a refund, she treated me rudely, implied that my motive for contacting her was because I had dress-regret, and said that she was the professional, there was nothing wrong with her work, and that I was the one with the problem. She said she would work on my dress again if I wanted her to, but she would do it her way, not in the way I wanted. Her way caused the problems in the first place, and I won't trust her with my dress again. I also unfortunately expect Dawn to reply to my review in a manner to cast doubt on my legitimacy, as she mentioned she would and could respond to any reviews I left online. *Value: I paid Dawn $280 for alterations, all of which I am now re-doing myself, other than the hem. Her poor workmanship is costing me time, costing me emotional energy, and costing me money beyond what I paid her. I will not take the dress back for more of her poor work. I have requested a refund for everything but the hem, but she will not issue a refund. Her final response was "perhaps we weren't meant to do this dress together." I paid her good money to do good work. She got my money, but I got only poor-quality work and an unwearable dress as she left it. That's not right by anyone's standards. *Flexibility: I'm giving Dawn a full star for flexibility, as I misjudged traffic once from Winchester, VA, and she made time to see me at the bridal shop instead of at her home. My first bridal gown fitting took place at Dawn's home. A month later for the second fitting I arrived at Dawn's house and she was not home. I knew she worked at a nearby bridal shop so I thought to drive over there. She was there and said she had confused my dress for one from that shop and thought the appointment would be there (which makes no sense because I did not buy my dress at that store). I felt very awkward because I was not a customer. She asked one of the other ladies to lace me up into the dress and she had a lot of trouble and then told me to wait for Dawn. I asked her if everything was OK with it and she said yes, but I could tell something was off. Dawn finally came over she stuffed me into the dress. I had concerns about the fit but she assured me that it was supposed to fit that way. 2 weeks later (2 weeks before my wedding) I tried the dress on at my sister's. There was no way she could get me into the dress. I immediately called Dawn and left her a message. I also called my bridal shop and they called me back right way and gave me the number of a seamstress they work with. Dawn didn't return my call for a day and a half. When she did, she left a message to call her back if I wanted to make an appointment. I had the appointment already with the other seamstress for the next morning and couldn't cancel at that point. And I am so glad that I didn't cancel! This time I took my sister with. The seamstress was shocked that another seamstress would tell me that the way that dress was on my actually "fit" properly. She found many other issues with the dress as well...crooked bustle, cups outside the dress (should have been inside the dress), hand stitching (should have been machine stitched), crooked stitches, too short hem...the list goes on. I hadn't noticed things given I felt so rushed in the store during the second fitting. I called Dawn right away with these issues first thing the next day but she never called me back. Instead she sent me an email refuting everything I told her and said I didn't "give her a chance" to fix the mistakes. If it was just the fit that was wrong with the dress I would not have been upset with Dawn at all but it was all of other issues and the way the problems were handled that I was very disappointed with. She also said in her email that she would refund me $100 dollars but never did. Even worse, she called my sister (she was also working on her MOH dress) instead of me and asked if she still wanted the work done since I was so unhappy, but never called me. The only positive things I can say was she did do nice beading work to the back of my dress. It was a terrible experience and I do not wish it on anyone else. Maybe Dawn was having an off day when she was working on my dress but it's not worth the risk with your precious bridal gown. read more

Dawn is an amazing seamstress! I came to her two weeks before my wedding day with a wedding dress that I didn't like. Dawn was able to take my dress from ho-hum to fabulous in less then a week! Her work is impeccable and she has a great eye and she knew just what I wanted even when I wasn't sure how to articulate it. She also sells beautiful bridal accessories- I purchased a head comb from her that was exquisite and it really completed my look on my wedding day. Last but not least her prices were really fair and much less expensive then what my girl friends payed to have their dresses altered- I think some companies really take advantage of brides by overcharging them but Dawn was really honest and kind to me.
