I'm extremely grateful for all of the lovely ladies at this alterations shop in Madeira, and the hard work they put in to make my wedding dress fit perfectly in time for the big day! My dress arrived in the mail just over two months before the wedding ... which led to a bit of a kerfuffle. The tailor that was originally recommended by my bridal shop does not accept new orders less than three months before a wedding date. I was panicking as I researched where else I could bring my gown ... and I found Alterations by Toni on Yelp. They got back to me right away - and got me in for my first fitting the following week! Everyone that I interacted with was friendly, professional, and extremely detail-oriented. I returned to the shop five times throughout the fitting process. Even though it was a lot of running around in the months leading up to my wedding - I appreciate the work these ladies put in to make sure my dress fit perfectly. I also brought in some extra lace, and had them fashion detached sleeves that I could wear during the ceremony. They went above and beyond to assist with this extra request - and I could not be more grateful. By the end of the alterations - it did end up costing me just over $500. That's a bit pricey, given all of the other wedding expenses that add up, but I do believe you can't put a price on how incredible you're going to feel in your wedding dress when it fits perfectly. They took my tent of a dress and transformed it into a silk glove with my body I'm an hour glass shape and they went above and beyond to get my fit correct. One of my favorite things is my bustle! They later da beautiful tear drop shape I didn't even think of so it wasn't just a bolt of fabric as my butt, it's an art piece now . I wanted to add off the shoulder straps so I purchased lace and they completely designed them with me until I was happy with them. They even added loops to my dress for a detachable train. Superb work, friendly staff, a cap on the price! Unfortunately my dress was ruined by this business in 2020 and I was still forced to pay more than originally agreed upon. I took the dress to a new seamstress to see if it could be salvaged, she told me that the dress appeared to have been taken in several sizes all the way down. I only needed the straps altered and a little taken in on the bodice, so why was the dress taken in all the way down? And several sizes? She said my size 10 dress could maybe fit a size 2 or 4. I couldn't even walk in it. I had to get a whole new dress off the rack 2 months before my wedding, it was a complete nightmare. I'm still heartbroken that I never got to wear the dress I had originally bought and fell in love with and was forced to purchase a new dress off the rack that I didn't love as much. read more

I purchased my dress at a sample sale and it was about 4 sizes too big. The dress turned out perfect. I live in Chicago but ended up having my alterations done in Cincinnati and am so happy I did. Toni was flexible with scheduling the alterations so being an out of towner was not an issue. The prices were super reasonable and significantly less than what I would have spent in Chicago. I would not recommend Toni's, at least not for bridesmaid dresses. They took more length than what was asked and they tried to let one of the bridesmaids walk away with a scoop neck dress when it was designed to be a bateau neckline. I called them and had to send a photo of the dress on the model as they asked "Can you send me a photo of what the dress should look like?. To me this was extremely unprofessional as the overall style of the dress should not be altered and the customer should never have to show an original photo of the dress to get it back to it's original style. They also did not complete some of the alterations by not darting the dress. Instead we were left with gaps by the armpits. Proceed at your own risk. They also charge a lot more than other local places. read more

I fell in love with my dress at a store that sells samples, and it was 1-2 sizes too big. It also had beading on the bodice, but Toni was able to lift the beading, take in the sides, and sew it back so that it looked like it was made that way. (Word of advice to future brides - altering beading is one of the pricier alterations, so think about this before buying a dress that is too big) I also had a lace-edged train, which is what made me fall in love with my dress in the first place. Toni worked with me through a few different bustle options and ended up doing a hybrid of two options to best display the lace on my train once my dress was bustled. In the end, the dress fit me perfectly - skimming my figure without being tight. My dress ended up being one of the things people complimented us about the most after our wedding. Aside from the dress and actual alterations, Toni was always very quick to respond to emails and right on schedule for my appointments. I was early for a couple of my appointments because I wasn't sure about traffic, and she was ready for me both times even though I was early. Her receptionist was also very kind! read more

I brought in a bridesmaid dress with a little more than 2 weeks until my event date, and was told they couldn't have anything ready for a month. No problem! I had waited because I'm pregnant and wasn't sure how my bump would look at this point. I was prepared to go elsewhere, but was asked to try the dress on and they'd see what they could do. She pinned me up and said they could do it. Great! I received a call that the dress was ready almost 5 days before originally estimated. The hem was done but I could barely tell a difference around my waist. When I put on the dress and said it was too big, the seamstress's response was, "You're pregnant, right?" Yes, but my belly wasn't going to grow 6+ inches in a week to fill it out! She pinned me up again around the waist. I left feeling frustrated but hopeful. The dress was ready again about 4 days later, but still waaaaaay too big around my waist! At this point, I was truly not pleased with my decision to come here and left feeling concerned about the wedding in 3 days! When the dress was ready again, I was beyond frustrated that I just said it fit and left. There wasn't any point in asking for more alterations. However, due to the need to take the waist in more, the hem became about 2 inches too short. The bodice of the dress was much too long for my torso and another bridesmaid actually sewed me into the dress on the wedding day because the straps were too large and kept falling. The ribbon around my waist was being held on by a single thread, and I know it didn't come from the bridal store that way. I struggled to write this, as I was so appreciative they took on the alterations in a shorter time than other customers. However, I feel like this process should not have taken so many tries to get partially right. I could've asked for the bodice to be fitted better if the waistline was completed right the first time. I could've had the ribbon stitched to the dress. Maybe the hemline wouldn't have been so short. I cannot recommend this shop if you want thoughtful alterations done. read more

I was referred to Alterations by Toni by the bride herself who had nothing but good things to say about Toni. If you are a bridesmaid, or other, you won't get to meet her and will be put with another associate in the store. I unfortunately did not have a great experience. The first time I went the ladies were very rude and I felt rushed. I put my dress on and tried to explain what I wanted but felt like the associate did not listen to my concerns and was quickly going over everything. I left with an invoice that was priced OVER what I paid for the dress. Over 140$ and they were charging me 14$ to close a slit about 4 inches!! When I went back they were much nicer, and I picked up the dress unsure if I liked it or not. I did not pay the full amount because I was so frustrated I said no to the hem. When I got home the dress looked awful in the back and they changed the way it was supposed to look. I also paid for the slit close and they didn't even do it. I emailed Toni and she said to bring it back. I brought it back and had the back straps fixed again, I also had it hemmed because I was only a week away from the wedding and was running out of options. The straps looked okay but the dress/cups were not fitted correctly and I had to pull it up constantly and was falling out. The associate told me "your just broad backed". Anyone can fit into a dress when it's properly altered!! I picked it up VERY unhappy with $140+ down the drain for a service that was not correct. The most I've ever had to spend for an alteration. I will mention, two other people in the bridal party had issues here as well! One received her money back, and the other had to take her dress elsewhere to be fixed. We all were disappointed!! I loved my wedding dress and being a practical person, I wanted to wear it again for our friends/family to see who had missed the tiny wedding, but moderated so it would tie in with the more festive, relaxed reception theme. Toni suggested shortening my dress to an A-line cocktail dress. She was just as meticulous tailoring this alteration as she was with my wedding dress (2 fittings) and I had it back in 1 week. My dress looks perfect! It is transformed but it is still my wedding dress! And her price was more than reasonable. This morning, I got the pleasure to meet Toni. I emailed her company only a week ago and explained my situation with my wedding dress and how I am constrained for time. By my mistake, I went to a different alterations company to initially get my dress altered and they did not do the best job. Thus, I found Alterations by Toni highly recommended and wrote her an email. I arrived about 30 minutes early to my appointment and she welcomed me in right away. I went to try my dress on, we discussed everything that needed to be done with it, and I felt amazing in my dress once it was all pinned and placed. I asked Toni several questions about my dress and she kindly answered them all. I cannot say enough great things about Toni, she truly made me feel comfortable and I am excited to pick up my dress in a couple weeks. I went to Toni's for a bridesmaid dress fitting back in 2017. Had a wonderful experience. However, I went there for a wedding dress fitting at the beginning of 2020, our wedding was set for the first part of April 2020. Obviously, that time was very chaotic. We decided to do a small ceremony with our immediate family. Which meant I still required my dress. They agreed to finish the final alterations and give me the dress the week before the wedding. It was very informal - handed me the dress through the door, took my payment and I was on my way. I did not have a final try-on. I got home and the dress was not complete; it did not fit me; There was a knick on the front that they attempted to correct that was extremely obvious. It was clear that the simple style of my dress was not one that they were used to working on.. I feel that they should have told me that at the beginning and recommended a different tailor. It would have been better if they had not altered the dress at all. It was completely destroyed. They did not actually do the final alteration and still charged me the full price. It is very unfortunate the way that it was handled. The dress was unfit to be worn. I had to borrow a dress from a friend of a friend the day before. I understand if they were not able to complete the dress due to everything that was going on at that time, but I would have rather that they were honest with me instead of not having integrity with it being completed to the requested specification. I had my wedding dress altered by Toni and I am so glad that I did! The dress was just a cheap David's Bridal clearance dress that I had a plan to make into something more modern and unique. Toni fully embraced the changes that I wanted to make (mainly adding in illusion panels on the sides) and she executed all of the alterations amazingly! I absolutely loved my dress and I felt so beautiful on my wedding day. Toni's prices were reasonable- in fact, I ended up spending WAY less than I thought I was going to. BRIDES!!! Do not even waste your time taking your wedding dress here. First, let me start off by saying I am not the person to write a review, especially a bad one. Businesses are struggling and I get that. However, your wedding day matters, your dress matters, and please please do not trust them with your dress. The boutique where I purchased my dress from recommended this place, and by the reviews it seemed reputable. I called to book my appointment in July, well in advanced, and they told me that they wouldn't need to see me until September (wedding is Dec). I had my best friend go with me to my appointment. As I'm putting on my dress in the fitting room, the Lady pinning my dress starts talking about how Toni-the owner "left them high and dry this week" and spilling the beans about all the animosity and tension within the business. Made me super uncomfortable #1, and #2 the way she was speaking of the business was so unprofessional. The appointment was so rushed and lasted a total of 10mins- I have an A-line gown with over 8 layers of tulle that needed hemmed. She also pinned the straps WAY too tight. When I told her it was too tight, she was so rude, border like yelling at me telling me she "knows what she's doing and it'll be fine, stop stressing out about it". Concerned because I needed pads put into the dress and wanted room to move my arms. She hands me padding that is about 5inches thick and says that those are the only pads they have. I have fuller breasts at baseline so I told her I just wanted lining to cover the girls, not really any extra padding. Well, they don't have that and she told me to order some bathing suit lining off Amazon.... I was horrified. They're pricing seemed reasonable, I will give them that. I left the appointment in tears and picked up my dress 2 hours after leaving the appointment. I had a gut feeling that my dress would not turn out the way I envisioned. I went to get my facial this week and my esthetician had the same experience, except they completely ruined her wedding dress and she had to buy a whole new one. I had recently made the mistake of taking a bridesmaid dress to this place. I was 7 months pregnant when I purchased my dress, so I needed the dress to be taken in, hemmed, and also needed straps added. When I dropped off the dress, the women were friendly and fitted me right away. We discussed adding two straps, but did not discuss the style or type. Since I have no idea about alterations, I didn't even think to discuss that until after I saw my dress. I was quoted $154 and was told to pick up in two weeks. When I picked up my dress two weeks later, I was mortified. The dress was so bulky on the places I needed it taken in, the hemline from the front to the back was crooked, and the straps looked awful. The straps didn't even match the style of the dress and made me look extremely boxy. Not to mention the fact that the didn't even look like they were in the right spot. There was even thread hanging out in several spots from where it was either cut and not seen back together or something else, I am not sure. There is also a draped piece in the front that was supposed to be raised since I needed it taken in and that was not done, so it just hung there and looked super sloppy. I couldn't even say anything, so I paid for the dress and left. As soon as I got to my car I IMMEDIATELY called my regular alterations place, they were on vacation when I needed the original appointment, and set up just a consultation to see if this was in my head or if it was really messed up. Sure enough the next day I took it to my regular girl and it was not in my head that the dress was messed up. The dress was so extremely bulky and thick in the chest area where I needed it taken in that I couldn't even get a safety pin through and was asked if they even fitted me for the dress because it was still so big. The extra fabric was simply folded into the dress and sewed into place, instead of cutting it and sewing it back together for a seamless look So now I have to repay at a different place because they couldn't do it right the first time, and I didn't trust them to try and fix it. I am currently on unpaid maternity leave and am so upset I paid $154 and will probably not get that back. I will never recommend this place for any sort of alterations to anyone. I would love to see that money and put it towards the corrections I have to make to fix the dress in time for the wedding. read more

I came to Alterations by Toni to make minor alterations to my wedding dress. I was extremely nervous, and for good reason...This is the most important article of clothing I will ever own! So everything had to be absolutely perfect, and Alterations by Toni did a great job. I scheduled my 1st appointment with Toni about 3 months before the wedding. The appointment was extremely fast (less than 30 minutes), and she just quickly pinned up my hem to the point I wanted it, and we talked about adding a few things like tacking my belt to the dress, etc. The only thing I didn't like about the consultation was that she asked me what I wanted, and I kind of expected her to let me try on the dress, then she would just tell me what she should do to it. This is my first time getting alterations done, and I wanted the expert to tell me what to do. But, overall, Toni was very professional, fast, and I was in and out of the dress in no time. We agreed on a price, and I paid 25% down, to pick up the dress later and pay the remainder. I came back 2 months later to pick up my dress (or so I thought), but when I tried on the dress again, the alterations weren't done and there were still pins in it. I guess I was there for a second fitting, but I would have rather just picked it up and be done with it. I came back again to pick up the dress. I was supposed to come on a Saturday, but something came up, so I called Toni to see if I could pick it up earlier. They agreed to have the dress done for me two days sooner than scheduled, which I really appreciated. Most other alterations salons would not be so flexible. Overall, the dress looks beautiful, and the work they did was great. Alterations by Toni is extremely busy, so I would expect everything they do to take a while, so you should definitely schedule your appointment way ahead of time. The alterations were a little pricey, but I wanted to make sure I didn't skimp on alterations...You may want to call for a quote if you're on a budget. Toni was very rude to my fiance today during her dress fitting, and unfortunately will be taking her business elsewhere. This is significant considering the fact that it took a month to book an appointment with Toni. My fiance had a few modest requests for changes to her dress, and instead of working with her and giving options, she simply dismissed them. Toni was quick to blame her for things she had no control over, like the amount of material available in the dress. After repeatedly getting shot down and chastised, my fiance was visibly upset. Her mom, who was with her, noted to Toni that she was being unnecessarily rude and was making my fiance cry. Her response was "She's making me cry! Toni and her team literally saved my wedding dress! Unfortunately, I used the 'recommended seamstress' from the shop where I purchased my gown...when I received my gown, it was a mess! The sweetheart neckline they added was off center and the hips puckered. Immediately knowing I did not want that seamstress to fix my dress, I frantically called Toni. She was able to see me within the hour and had my dress fixed by the date I needed (my wedding was less than 2 weeks away). The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because it took almost a month to receive my dress back. Definitely feel like pricing should be discussed over the phone when making an appointment so people aren't blind sided with outrageous pricing. I was also disgusted by the way I was talked to during my appointment with a woman named Kathy I believe? She made me feel like I was an inconvenience for her. Anytime I'd answer her questions, she'd give me a very rude response like I should know better. My friend who was with me even thought she was being very rude to me. Everything that she said was rude from the moment I walked in. When we said we wanted to go elsewhere, I was charged $75 for "wasting their time". So I guess I paid $75 to feel like an inconvenience and be degraded for 20 minutes. Definitely would recommend going elsewhere or going to someone other than Kathy. read more
