I had to grab the hummus and fresh pita bread, so many options to choose from. Hummus was smooth and perfect! I admit I didn't try the sweets--the baklava had the look of potentially being 5* level. The savories here are standard but not special. Spinach fatayer had a nice flavor but was a bit soggy, similar for the olive crescent. Pita bread is nice and fluffy but not spectacular. Good selection of dry groceries too. read more

I have been twice to this ethnic store and found it to be a good deal with an assortment of Arabic and other ethnic treats and goods. There is a bakery, and you can buy pistachio and walnut baklava among other goodies. Plus, the fresh pita bread there is inexpensive and delicious. I also bought and tried an orange soda with basil seeds made in Thailand that was quite good. The first time I went there were very small pizzas but these were not available when I went last night around 6 pm. Not all the doors are open to the place, last night I had to try each one before finding the unlocked one. In any case, this is a good ethnic place worth checking out with good prices. read more

I love this bakery/Mediterranean grocery. Best pita bread in louisville by far. They also have other pastries that are great, but roll have to ask of you want to know what's in them. They also have Iraqi pita which of not common at all. Amazing section of pickles, spices, and other Mediterranean fare. Check it out. Very friendly service. Great prices. Their food is fine; however, they have installed a sign at the corner of Klondike and Hikes Lane that prevents people from being able to see traffic when turning right off of Klondike Lane onto Hikes Lane. It is dangerous, and I think they should remove the sign. read more

When I left Louisville more than 30 years ago I was amazed at the foods I could get from the Levant it seemed only from the bigger cities like Houston and Dearborn. It would take some time before Louisville grew enough, but when I returned to Kentucky, I was amazed by this little bakery/grocery ... great selection, good-to-great prices, and bread that is out of this world! The people that run this place are kind, helpful, and some of the best people I have come to know and I am so happy they are now part of my community. I am always excited to visit a different ethnic store. The Alwatan Bakery is next door to the Alwatan restaurant. The store is well organized and larger than it seems from the outside. There are countless rows of canned goods, biscuits, sauces, spices, etc. They also have a freezer section full of pre-made kibbehs, falafels and other breads. They also offer some fresh halal meats. And then there are the baklavas and other sweets. My experience here today is 3 stars instead of 4 stars because I'm just not sure whether the owner cared about my presence in the store. read more

This Bakery is located in Hikes Point area near elementary School I attended in 1970s. I moved away in 1989 and returned 2 years ago. The neighborhood has transitioned to more international families. Alwatan, Restaurant displays a Lebanese Flag(let's skip politics and concentrate on food); Diversity of food & culture is what makes this place great. My wife wanted to get some spices for rice and we stopped here while she went in. I reminded her to get pastry. She was in there seemed for ever but when she brought two plates of pastry for the kids and Me. She also purchased many items not easily found elsewhere if one cooks at home. It has plenty of middle eastern groceries, meat, canned goodies, frozen and refrigerated goodies and sweets. It should rank an average (3 stars) but the fact they make their pita bread, cheese bread, za'atar (thyme +sesame seeds) bread, meat and spinach pastries, so they ranked 4. It needs a little more organization, and little more supplies to earn the 5th star. I've enjoyed coming to this establishment for many years. It is within walking distance of my house and every time I walk in I'm always greeted with a smile and a hello. The food is always fresh and I enjoy trying new dishes, however I always stick to getting the same lamb gyro with extra sauce, (I love the cucumber sauce and like a lot of it) and extra tomatoes. Sometimes I get the combo that comes with fries and a drink. Or the tomato and cucumber salad which bursts with flavor. The hummus is creamy and is never dry. They give you good size portions that I will order to go and take it to a party for the appetizer portion. It's a great place to get food to go for picnic food as well. This place is awesome, hands down. I used to eat here 5 or so years back when I lived in this area and enjoyed it then. Note: it's better now. I moved back to the area and my wife and I decided to stop back in for lunch. Got a gyro, falafel, and hummus all of which were incredible. We personally get hummus with 3 extra pita breads once or twice a week now. This has happened for weeks. I throw in falafel or other items from time to time and everything I have ordered is spot on. The store is small, but always clean and well-organized. I am partial to the fresh-baked pita at Alwatan. I also like their variety of fresh baked Arabic cookies. Alwatan carries fresh Halal meats. Very fresh meat, I think on Friday only, not sure---side of lamb and veal pulled out and then cut to order in front of you! This will make it hard to buy meat from Kroger going forward. This place is very authentic, and next door they have a small eatery. The Baklava is very delicious, they have regular and also pistachio. I do notice that this place is old school, many middle eastern items, relics, religious symbols. As an American, you do not blend in well as many shoppers are international here.
