Sam was my primary colorist for the day. I'd sent images of my hair & screenshots of the look I wanted & it was clear that Sam had put thought & effort into preparing the best method for my color well before I arrived! It was a welcoming & pleasant experience to be in her chair & I appreciated very much that, at one point when we were using different terminology for the same thing, she took time to communicate with me & make sure we both understood what the goal was - so refreshing as I've had some stylists/colorist have a confused look on their face after a consultation, but plunge ahead anyway assuming they know what I mean. Unfortunately my phone camera doesn't capture any of the many dimensions of color, so it looks more like ombre, but believe me it's quite exact to the look I was going for! This person who recommended me always had beautiful color. I was looking for a single process dye. I wanted my highlights to show through. If someone is trained properly with color, this is not hard. Apparently, the woman I was recommend to did not have the training. Her name is Sona and I would NEVER recommend her. She is a nice person but runs her clients like an assembly line. She does not listen to the customer. I came in with sun bleached hair. I do a lot of gardening. The sun does change the color. I wanted her to get as close to the natural color of my hair as possible which is brunette. This has never been a problem before. She looked in my hair and said she could see where it was darker. Instead of making the color what I wanted, she made the color match the sun bleached hair which was easier for her so she could get to the next client. My hair has a red glow. It is really ugly. I refuse to go out in public looking like this. Does nobody understand what this does to a person? I just want to cry every time I look in a mirror. She really did a number on me. She also said I needed a glaze. I never had this before from anyone. I have no idea what a glaze is or what it does. She never explained this to me nor did she tell me the cost. The customer always needs to be informed so the customer can make a logical decision. I figured this would be a temporary color wash. Maybe $10? When I went to pay I got sticker shock they added on $35.Not everyone in the NorthShore is wealthy like most assumes. I know the value if a dollar but I struggle for every penny. This was a scam in my eyes and to get a commission for something that was not needed. Be ware of additional costly services that are not needed. In all my years of having my hair colored,I never had a glaze on a single process dye. I still have no idea why one needs this. I did talk to the manager. I wanted to talk to the owner but she made herself obsolete. I don't like talking through people. This is how misunderstanding and miscommunications happen. I did talk to the manager who talked to the owner. Horrible! You need to talk directly with the owner. This never happened. I asked many times. I also asked this manager if this somewhat of a colorist is a master colorist or on her way. I wanted to see her certificates. Apparently she is just someone off the streets who does coloring. She has no certificates for me to see. She was not licensed. In all my years of coloring my hair, I have never seen anything like this. I was told they would tear up my check. We will see if this is true but I was also told I can not have any of their services again. They think this is customer service friendly. I don't think so. I was left with a mess that will be very costly and take many months to correct. The color is uneven. I am so embarrassed. They simply do not care. I do not recommend going here. It was a horrible experience. Just be honest if you can't do what the customer wants. This is all I have ever asked.

In less than five minutes of conversation, it's easy to understand why. Rodney is comfortable speaking to just about anyone. I have watched him with his clients over the years. What impresses me is that it seems he styles males as much as females. Of every age. I don't see many male stylists who are able to do that. This goes for the Chicago salons I have visited over the years. Rodney may or may not agree, but he has always reminded me of James Dean. When I walked into the salon at 17, he had a tight-white t-shirt on, and jeans. Just like the icon himself. Rodney seems to like music and culture from that era as well. In contrast, Rodney has longer blond hair which echos more of the '80s. I've always found that amusing. Rodney is the best. Just sit down in his chair and let him tell you all about the El Camino he's restoring. I can't wait until he finishes this car. The look of satisfaction on his face will be epic! If you ask, he'll show you photos on his cell phone. Rodney is an unsung hero of hair. Twenty-seven years later, I found Rodney in the same salon where I left off back in the early 2000's. I had just moved back from California, and reconnecting with Rodney was just what the doctor ordered. He knows pretty much everything about me, and I had a California story for him which captured almost everyone's concerns in the salon. It was my first haircut and color since I got home, and it felt Cathartic. Also, I have never felt so supported by people I didn't know. Just when I was thinking humans were poisonous, everyone here in this moment reminded me that some people are still good. You could tell by the looks on their faces. Even if they were just curious. lol That's okay. I get that way too. I now live in Chicago, and drive completely out of my way to get my hair done. My old stomping grounds. It takes a good chunk out of my day, but it's totally worth it. Chicago salons have never treated me well. I might find a decent stylist, but my hair ends up dried out, and it breaks off, leaving my hair looking frizzy. All from the color that they use. When Rodney colors my hair, it feels the same as it did when I started my day. There's probably a simple answer, but what it translates to is a world of difference! The Optometrist I work with has learned a little bit about Rodney after each of my visits. She notices the color right away and knows I went to see him. It's to the point where curiosity has gotten the better of her because of how I describe him as a person. She already knows he has talent from looking at my hair. However, it's because of the nice things I've had to share about the kind of person he is, which made her say, "I have to go meet Rodney." I really hope she does.

This review should not reflect on the salon as a whole, only on the stylist, Irena Goldstein. Irena cut my hair once before and did a great job. So I went back for a second time recently and NEVER AGAIN! After bragging that she had 30 years of experience, she couldn't get the line straight in a simple, one length, blunt cut on my long hair. I had asked her to cut less than an inch because I am continuing to grow it out. Between multiple attempts to even the line, first cutting one side, then the other, over two appointments in two days, she cut off more than 2 inches and it's still not symmetrical. That's 4 months of growing time! And she charged more than I have ever paid for a one length haircut. And during this process she wasn't listening! I couldn't get a word in edgewise. Her constant gabbing, talking over me, explanations, justifications for herself, useless apologies about what she didn't intend, did nothing to fix the problem. I finally put an end to this horrible experience and walked out. No matter how much you brag about your "experience" as a haircutter, you're no better than your last haircut and the way you made the client feel. Once the hair is cut off you can't put it back. The stylist can walk away, but the client has to live with it. I felt terrible when I left the salon. That's what I will remember until I can rectify the problem in 4 months, using someone else. DO NOT LET IRENA GOLDSTEIN TOUCH YOUR HAIR!

She's talented, kind, and a really good colorist.
