This constant rotation is especially confusing for someone with dementia, and I've had to personally meet with each new caregiver to explain how to communicate with him and what activities he enjoys. Over the course of ten months, some caregivers were kind, while others were outright unkind. I saw no real signs of specialized dementia training. Often, during the three-hour visits we paid for, they would simply let him sleep rather than engaging him in meaningful activities. UPDATE: My father went into the hospital and I texted Amanda at 5:10pm to let them know he needs services canceled for SUNDAY. If they hadn't been there to help, our lives would have gone sideways more than once. The impact they had on us may well have saved my life. The default path we were heading down when we reached out to them had a hidden life-threatening risk that we likely wouldn't have avoided. This is a very small agency, and one of the biggest challenges I experienced was the lack of adequate support and structure. There are only a handful of people handling the operations, and some employees are responsible for several different roles at once. When one person is doing seven different jobs, it becomes extremely difficult for employees in the field to receive timely communication, guidance, or support when issues arise. In healthcare, especially hospice, employees need to feel like they have a reliable team behind them. The workload and caseload could also become overwhelming. There were times when the expectations placed on staff felt unrealistic, and it became difficult to provide the level of care and attention that both patients and employees deserve. Healthcare is already emotionally demanding, and when staffing, communication, and workload issues are added on top of that, it can take a serious toll on your mental and emotional well-being. Another major concern was how an incident toward the end of my employment was handled. Prior to this situation, I had no write-ups or disciplinary history. However, after the incident, I received a write-up that was made into a final warning with the possibility of termination. Rather than continuing under those circumstances, I decided to submit my two-week notice. I was then told that I would be paid for my two weeks and that I would not be required to return to work during that period. What made this experience even more difficult was that I was open and honest with management about the impact everything was having on my mental health. I communicated that I was struggling mentally and that I was going back to my doctor to address what I was experiencing. Despite being transparent about that, I did not feel that there was much compassion, concern, or remorse shown toward me. I never received an apology or meaningful acknowledgment of how the situation was affecting me. I have worked and traveled in healthcare settings in different places, and I have experienced a variety of work environments. Out of all of those experiences, this is by far the workplace where I felt my mental health decline the most. That is something I don't take lightly. Work can be stressful, especially in healthcare, but there is a difference between normal workplace stress and feeling like the environment is negatively affecting your overall well-being. Unfortunately, I am also now having to go back and forth regarding my final pay because the amount I received does not appear to match what I was told I would be paid. Once the discrepancy was brought to the company's attention and the mistake was identified, I still did not feel that there was any real apology or accountability regarding the situation. Having to repeatedly follow up about money that I believe I am owed has added even more unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation. What disappointed me the most was that I originally entered healthcare because I genuinely care about people. Working in hospice requires compassion, patience, empathy, and a heart for the patients and families we serve. Over time, however, I felt like the workload, pressure, lack of support, and workplace issues made it difficult to maintain that same sense of purpose. When employees become overwhelmed and feel unsupported, it can make you feel like you're being forced to take the heart out of healthcare just to get through the day. I believe employees deserve a workplace where they can communicate concerns without feeling like they're being labeled as problematic, where mistakes can be addressed fairly and constructively, and where mental health and employee well-being are taken seriously. Healthcare workers give so much of themselves emotionally and physically, and the people providing that care also need support. There were certainly positive aspects of my time with the company, and I appreciate the experience I gained during the six months I was there. However, the way my employment ended, the lack of consistent support, the workload, the impact on my mental health, and the ongoing questions surrounding my final pay ultimately left me feeling that this was not the right long-term environment for me. I hope the company takes this feedback seriously and considers improving communication, workload management, employee support, accountability, and transparency regarding payroll. A small agency can still create a strong, supportive workplace, but that requires employees to feel heard, respected, and valued--not only when things are going well, but especially when problems arise.
