Get in quick, I expect that before long this will become the go to for Britomart types and very soon it will be hard to get a table. First week opening and we were sitting at the Bar for lunch. Impressive that such a large space can be filled to the gills on a Friday lunchtime and unlike other restaurant/bars nearby the noise level managed to be kept to a tolerable level. I ordered a soda to start, as I did have to go back to work, but judging by the amount of Cocktails ordered clearly that was not the case for a large portion of the clientele. On to the food I ordered the Octopus salad, delish served grilled with crisp cucumber and a dressing to die for and a side serving of tomatoes (again perfectly dressed). Only down side was that the plate broke (honestly when I had eaten 80% of the meal) but the professional service of Amano saw this quickly rectified by offering a whole new dish. Running out of time to eat said dish again the professional team where quite happy to let me box it up and take away. I will be back, im already planning the work Christmas lunch to be held at Amano. read more

New favourite place! I had high expectations as the other Hip Group establishments (St Heliers Bay Bistro, Ortolana, Rosie, etc.) are always reliably good. We certainly weren't disappointed. The fit out is cool in an old renovated building in Britomart that I had been keeping an eye on the development of. There are lots of seating options with tables, banquette areas, high stools around marble benches and seating at the bar around the large and open kitchen. We sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the kitchen operate. It's a well-oiled machine with no yelling and calm efficiency. They make their own pasta on site and bake their own bread. The menu doesn't dictate sharing - why do so many restaurants require that - but does lend itself to sharing if you want to sample a number of dishes. And you will want to. I could happily eat there every day for a while to work my way through the menu. It's hard to decide what to choose. We settled on sharing the octopus and had individual dishes of asparagus casonsei and beef carpaccio. Chargrilled and served with cucumber and burnt chilli salsa verdi, the octopus was our favourite. It was still warm, soft and just beautiful. The casonei pasta was also great and the carpaccio. We didn't have room for dessert, but given the association with Milse, I'm sure they're amazing. As with the other Hip Group establishments, the service was fantastic. Helpful, there when you need it and needs anticipated, e.g. wiping the bar after I spilt oil. Go now. read more

I'm not sure what to think of Amano just yet... the food I had was pretty average but the drinks, service and style of the place was great so it may have just been a bit of a miss. I had the asparagus casoncelli, pasta parcels that were covered in a creamy sauce. It looked deliciouuus, and I am an absolute fan of asparagus and cheesy or creamy sauces, but i was a little disappointed. The sauce was strangely sour and the asparagus was diced into small, crunchy pieces that was ultimately the weirdest way I've eaten asparagus. It was garnished with breadcrumbs (??), overall making a very strange experience. Still 4 stars because the place and drinks were amazing. Wow. We were in town for about 24 hours. We walked into a clothing store, hit it off with the owner and he suggested Amano. Said he and the wife truly enjoy it and it would be worth a visit. We wondered over in the late afternoon to make a reservation, but they stop taking them when 50% booked. They recommend that we pop in early and grab a seat at the bar. We couldn't get past the bakery counter without ordering a smashed meatball sandwich, toasted. Simply delicious lunch on the run. We came back for dinner and sat at the bar, watching the open kitchen. Forget the food for a moment. Watching a truly professional kitchen is better than going to the ballet. Not a waisted motion, no drama, just great cooking. Dinner could not have been better. We had chicken liver pâté for starters, followed by pasta with shrimp and the fish of the day with caramel salted gelato and strawberry sorbet. It was all great and way too much food, but we could not help ourselves! Usually there is something that can be improved. For the life of me, I can't find anything I would change about Amano. We may hit it again tomorrow for breakfast making it three meals in a row! read more

I was one of several solo diners eating a full, lovely dinner at the bar, where they didn't make me feel like a second class citizen. More importantly, the food... wonderful. I had a local fish which was seasoned well with breadcrumbs and herbs. I had a side of Brussels sprouts which were lightly cooked and had an awesome chili cashew seasoning. The wine they recommended for my meal was spot-on. The guy next to me ordered two vegetable sides for his dinner which would be a great strategy. And the pasta looked fabulous. I dropped by the next morning for a takeout breakfast and also took a carrot cake for a midday snack - both were nice and fairly priced. I almost came back one more time but there are so many good places in Auckland I decided to skip, but if I'm back in the city this will be my first stop. read more

Interesting place. Obviously a trendy restaurant that is doing well. Just me so I sat at the bar. Service was excellent despite them being busy. I started with a nice Pinot Noir and sparkling water. Ordered the Linguine Scampi (shrimp). It was very different than traditional scampi with nice spices and bacon. How can you not love it. Bar folks were attentive and pleasant. This was our best dining experience while in Auckland, and one we spoke about for days afterwards. We came after 7:30 on a Friday night and were told we'd have a 40 minute-or-so wait. The food looked so great, we committed, walked around the area, and returned for a table by the front windows. By that time we were REALLY hungry. As appetizers, we got the stracciatella, burrata, and the trevally crudo. Our entrees were the spaghetti, handkerchief pasta, and the tortellini. There was nothing that could be improved upon, it was THAT good. Lots of happy food noises were being made at our otherwise quiet table, we were concentrating on enjoying our meal! Really great! We came for Sunday lunch around 1:45PM. The service was good. Ordering food was quick. The problem is their serving time. Or did they just forget us? And was served our mains at 3:00pm! If Gordon Ramsay was their patron he will be fuming mad! The food was good but not great. Portion size depends on the dish ordered. As an example, the Scampi Agnolotti was just a few pieces of Auckland Island scampit tails enclosed in pasta parcels. Like dumplings. And you pay NZD26.00 for this dish! For waiting such a long time to be served our food this sucks! Left the restaurant starving! Never again to return to this establishment! read more

I love pasta. One of my favourite things in life. We were told to go here by a woman we met in Sydney on NYE and her advice was spot on. Delicious meal. I had the tomato pasta, my husband had the pasta with shrimp and our other friend had this sheet of pasta with a pesto. We all loved our meals. I will say that they are heavy on the sauce but I like that. If you don't you may want to ask them to lighten up on it. The ambiance here is also pretty cool. It's a great space. Staff was great. On a recent trip to NZ, four of us ate here twice, and I had breakfast once. The breakfast was delicious, and that inspired us to dine here. Both times the dinners were delicious and nicely presented with excellent service. The building itself is an old warehouse and has a spacious, friendly atmosphere. We were able to dine here once without reservations, but it that isn't always possible, so I'd strongly recommend that you phone ahead. read more

The pasta dishes are better than the meat dish. We tried all but the tortellini. The mac with sweet corn- Delish. Now, the meat, pork was dry with a COLD piece of apricot that was shocking. That dish was comparatively smaller than the fish. It started off well because we had pasta first but then took them a LONG time to get the entree. Plus, we noticed that other tables had bread and we never got any. So I requested for it- our waitress gave us just butter unlike the other table who got butter and olive oil. My boysenberry cocktail cost 18$ which small and did not taste as good as the kids 5$ boysenberry drink. Quality control issue here. Would I go back- no. The restaurant Leonardo in Rotorua was much better and cost a lot less. read more

Ate here last night with my wife prior to the Celine Dion concert. It's long been on my list and and the fact it's an all day eatery meant we could be there at 5pm and eat and be on our way. I arrived at 4:30 pm, explained my wife would be there later and enquired about delivery times for food so I could order and my wife could turn up and eat. They were very accommodating. I ordered the Ruby Fish Crudo, which was very nice. I have not had Ruby Fish today but highly recommend it. We also ordered the Chargrilled Kahwai and the Lamb. Both were very nice, though honestly the Kahwai was over seasoned for my taste. The fish itself was tender and juicy and I enjoyed it with the pickled onions. My wife's lamb was also excellent. Cooked till perfectly pink. Service was on the whole reasonably attentive and sitting watching the chefs work is something I always enjoy. I would return here without hesitation! the bathrooms are nice and clean, and the restaurant is a lovely environment. read more
