We tried to go to a few local spots but the kitchens were all closed for the afternoon. Then, like an oasis, Taverna De Pasquino appeared before us, and while their kitchen was closing they told us that they could do salads and lasagna. It was the best lasagna we've ever eaten in our lives, and I say that as a lasagna snob that makes his own from scratch. The service was excellent, and the next time we're in Rome we'd go out of our way to go back here.

Mushroom pasta was ok (expected more chewiness to noodles and more creaminess. Arrabiata pasta was good and cured meat place was alright. We still really liked this place overall though. Finally we ordered and asked for a basket of bread. The bread was stale, and the only saving grace was the prepackaged bread sticks that they included in the basket. Once we got our food, they initially gave us a wrong dish but did correct it within 5 minutes. We got the spaghetti Alla carbonara and the bucatini all' amatriciana. The carbonara was better than the amatriciana, it was a better balance of flavors. The sauce in the amatriciana wasn't very good. Lastly, we opted to get the tiramisu for dessert and it was heavily topped with cinnamon. But once you got underneath, it was pretty good. Overall, I wouldn't waste your time eating here. Better places to try in the Monti.

You're there to eat great food, drink wine, and talk for 3 hours. We went twice -- and each time I had a different kind of pasta. The first time I had the arrabbiata, which was good, but not as spicy as I'd hoped for. The second time I went super basic -- pasta pomodoro, just a tomato and basil sauce, and it was one of the most delicious pastas I think I've ever had. The bread was unbelievable, and the wine was great -- although please don't ask me what it was. Like other real Italian restaurants they asked, "What do you want?" and we asked "What do you have?" and went with their recommendation. Has never steered me wrong yet! For veggies I asked for an insalata mista and it was ginormous -- I would recommend getting one to share. Also, whether this place or other places in Rome, don't expect the Houlihans/Friday's laundry list of all the different salad dressings. Oil and vinegar. And you know what? It's totally worth it. The olive oil in every restaurant I went to is so good if they'd allowed me I probably would've tossed some back in a shot glass. Add some balsamic vinegar and a little salt and pepper, and it's a really refreshing, basic salad. Trust me! Now, this restaurant is not in the main part of downtown/touristy Rome, although on a Friday and Saturday night, this street with a number of restaurants and bars is absolutely hopping. But if you end up staying up in this area of Rome (I'll be writing a review of the hotel in which I stayed shortly which I highly recommend), this is a great place for dinner. I also remember them opening on the earlier side, which in Rome is about 7:30. Mangia bene!

The main distinguishing feature I recall here was that a fair percentage of the staff was from the Phillipines (though they may have been in Rome for a long time). Also, their wines were only sold by the 1/2 liter, liter, or bottle (not by the glass). We got the standard table bottle of still water. Honestly, a lot of the Italian restaurants where we ate ran together in terms of what dish I got where. The pastas were almost uniformly good, so it is hard to recall. I may have gotten lasagna here. Whatever I had was pretty good. I do not recall anyone in our party being dissatisfied with the meal. The location was a block or so of the Via Nazionale, in the direction of the Termini Station. If you just got off the train, this would not be a taxing walk. I'd consider eating here again if I returned to Rome.

Unlike most restaurants in Italy, which are all about al fresco dining, Lo Zozzone is an indoors experience. The tables are close to each other and to the walls so it can get a bit cramped but that's my only complaint. Service (3.5/5): Typical European service. A bit slow, a bit inattentive, but acceptable. You may have to grab your waiter's attention here and there but you'll make it. Food (3/5): Lo Zozzone is known for their Roman-style stuffed pizza which is a bit deceiving as it's basically a sandwich and not pizza. They have a huge menu with various toppings and sauces and such. It'll be served warm on thick, focaccia bread and it will be filling. And moderately priced at that. I went with the prosciutto and sun-dried tomatoes which made a nice combo. Just a sandwich in my book so not spectacular but it did the job. Drinks (4/5): I had a soft drink so not much to write about here. If you're looking for a restaurant with some character and you'd like to try some food that Rome is known for, Lo Zozzone is a good choice. Very flavorful! I couldn't get enough. Unfortunately they didn't have pasta available this evening so I wasn't able to try that, but it just gives me a reason to try it next time I am in town. The decor is adorable, very eclectic and reminds me of eating in someone's kitchen. It's so cute and lots of fun things to look at on the walls. There are a few tables outside, especially for the warm Summer days, and three rooms on a basement level downstairs. Pizza is good also for people with digestion or food-tolerance issues, and is prepared in the wood oven just in front of people, as a guaranty of how things are done and what ingredients are used.
