I've seen the first two productions of their current season. Speaking of season, as it starts to warm up couples around the Morristown area will be looking for something new to do and an outing to the theater makes a great date night. SEASON TICKETS are a great gift idea! Recently I helped backstage with the production for End of the Rainbow, a musical by Peter Quilter, which tells the humorous, touching story of the fabulous Judy Garland. While unveiling incite to the elusive abuse endured by this iconic legend of the silver screen and her unfortunate passing, this show will make you laugh and give you pause. The set was great. Lighting was spot on and under the direction of Interim Executive Director Dr. Dennis Elks, the cast of local actors kept our eyes glued to the stage. Tennessee is the Volunteer State and over this past month it has been an honor to volunteer for Encore Theatrical. It feels good to work alongside other creative, passionate individuals all focused on helping not only our youth but new and seasoned artists alike have a space in which to grow. People can offer their help to assist with costumes, set construction, painting, organization, marketing, community outreach and so much more (all while exercising an old skill set or developing a new one)! Theatre will always have a place in the world as its roots are grounded in storytelling and empathy which connects all types of characters across all walks of life and sometimes you see a performance worthy of an ENCORE.

This would have been skipped if not for the sign along the interstate. I thought, "Wait, THAT…read moreCrockett?" and yes, this is related to the pioneer Davy Crockett who was killed at the Alamo. A lovely friendly woman at the desk who informed me that they only accept cash or checks, which is quite 1800s if you ask me. I had already used up my cash (need to get more) and have Google Pay or cards. Oh, well. Thankfully, you can still walk the grounds for free and there's enough to see there too. This is the site of the original Crockett Tavern which was established and operated by John and Rebecca Crockett, the parents of David Crockett (1786-1836). It was the boyhood home of the pioneer and political leader of Tennessee. It is located along what was then the main trail from the east to the new frontier which is now US-11 and I-81. Lots to see with artifacts, a Conestoga wagon and memorabilia from the period. I found it interesting and $5 per person is a reasonable entry fee. The museum is clearly marked and easy to spot right on the side of the road. Parking is easy across the street but it's also right near the residential area and I hate to park anywhere that might disrupt others. Guess they can't do too much about that tho. There is a walk area with adjacent facilities if you want to wash up after your travels. Nothing fancy, but clean and tidy. The museum is mainly open May-October so plan ahead for some sightseeing. The buildings are awesome. Replicas, of course. But nevertheless really cool to see and learn about Davy's early days working at pop's tavern. Try to get here during one of the living history days. Every child wants to wear a coonskin cap and romp around in the green like a frontier kiddo. Just do it.

We enjoyed a self guided tour of the home and a trip to the gift shop. General Longstreet was an excellent tactician with a heart for his men. It was interesting to learn that he was often in disagreement with General Lee, especially over Gettysburg and Pickett's Charge. After the War, he supported his longtime friend and once adversary, President Grant. He was also in support of Reconstruction and healing a nation. Glad to have this museum and the very helpful curator in our community.

Mr. William Nenney's house is probably not much to look at on the outside. It's not ostentatious…read more It's really rather simple. But the hard wood floors creak with charm and the small handful of Nenney family historical pieces bring it to life. Overall, it's very well preserved and chock-full of archives from the Civil War. Beyond showcasing Longstreet, actually the interior is full of information, anecdotes and historical tidbits about East Tennessee's fascinating role during several campaigns. And since I'm particularly intrigued with both those things this visit was a real treat for me! I told my tour guide that I was just passing through and that we needed to be quick. She understood and made accommodations. She was so sweet and just let me tour around the house at my pace while she stood nearby to answer questions. You can tell she really loved giving tours, especially to the school kids as she tells me. She says, "You realize, you are walking around the same place where Longstreet marched around in his boots. Right?" Well, yeah. When you put it that way it makes this house really cool. If you want you can time your visit around a reenactment which they host seasonally. Besides that, there's no blood or gore or big elaborate exhibit at this museum. Mainly just a select few artifacts and the rest is knowledge and oral storytelling and trinkets passed down from nearby families. At the adjacent visitor center you can pull out a read from one of the dozens of notebooks, binders, and archives of paper, print and historical record. It's really great preservation work. You'll just have to visit the Nenney house to see for yourself. There's lots to learn.

Pool has a short season and there is no indoor facility for swimming. Tennis courts are almost always available. We are not golfers and that was a key decision point about joining. There were not enough social events for us to become members, after nearly 15 years of membership of a club in the city we moved from. That was the tipping point of our decision not to join. Club organized activities regularly are a must for us. We are at the club several times a month for Rotary, celebrations and fundraisers...when we see they have stepped up the social offerings, we will seriously consider joining!

I have been here at least twice over the years. I recently visited this racetrack again. I had fun…read more There wasn't many cautions as it seems they have experienced race car drivers and the track is built is always great for racing. The race track officials seem to know what they are doing. It has great facilities. I had no problems parking and getting in and out of. Bathrooms have water and soap to wash your hands. Concession stands didn't have long lines and had a great selection and had reasonable prices. You can see the racetrack from any seat in the house with a great view. Anyway, I called the racetrack and they said it would be ok for me to camp out here overnight. However, when I woke up, I was couldn't get out because they had the entrance gate locked. So, I had to call the race director/ owner to remind him that they said I could stay over. It took about an hour for someone to come and let me out. But, I enjoyed coming here anyway.
